Great job so far! It's too late for this model, but an often-overlooked detail on armoured vehicles is the rubber tire around the road wheels. If you look at a real tank, those rubber tires get the living crap beaten out of them fairly quickly. T it would look here would be gouges and nicks taken out of the contact surfaces and corners. Most modelers ignore them because of scale, but on a 1/16 scale it would look great. I'm glad you're doing a DAK Stug!

Another good video Nigel. I wasn't bothered about the wheel rim on the main wheel tyres. I judged that it would be easier to paint them all black first. Paint the wheels dark yellow. Then fit the tyres after. I don't care if there is a wheel rim on the tyres. When I dust them up with weathering later, you will hardly notice. I made my tracks up and fitted them as per the instructions. I painted all the lower hull, and the wheels. Built up the tracks. Painted the tracks with some basic rust weathering. Then I built one side of wheels and fitted the tracks as per the instructions. Then I fitted the outer wheels after the tracks as they suggest in the instructions. I think you will struggle to get the tracks on if you fit all the wheels first. It was when fitting the tracks where I discovered some of the swing arms wanted to keep springing out of those guide grooves. That is why I ended up gluing them all in a level setting.

I have fitted the tyres and built up my wheels now Andrew, I have also made a removable link for the tracks so they are easy to get on and off. I have turned it into a more conventional build. I was wrong about the tyres..

Hi Nigel, in regards to the tyre seam I believe they are correct as shown when you put the tyre together. I belong to a german military re-enactment group and there are couple of blokes with a panzer 4 which come to an event we have once a year and the tyres on the tanks have the same seam. It happens when they press the rubber on the tyre when they need replacing.

Hi Paul, yes I am aware of that now and mention it in part 3. I also mentioned it when I did the premiere in the chat.

Hi Nigel... Nice to see you building a tank on here .. Just followed your Stuka build and enjoyed it .. I have that Stug kit and have gotten pretty much to the same place as you are at after the second video.. Love the kit and yes it has a few little hiccups , I'm not going to lose sleep over them ... One little thing I might mention is this Stug was too late a version to have been painted grey.. the ones that were had a vision port on the side of the drivers compartment and the angle on hull sides were sharper .. But makes no difference.. it'll look great ! Have fun and I'll be watching!

Nigel lol I always paint the wheels, suspension and lower hull during assembly as well. It makes perfect sense to me ! My "understanding" is that the modern view on German Grey is its darker and less blue toned than the Tamiya version. More like RLM 66 cockpit grey (it may indeed be the same). The Tank Museum has painted a Panzer 2 in a 1939/40 german grey/dark brown scheme which would have been typical of the Invasion of France (and presumably Poland). The brown was dropped in late 1940.

@Nigel's Modelling Bench: I just checked photo reference showing STUG III Tyres, and they do have a rim on the rubber that butts up against the metal wheel rim, and is flush with it - it is rubber, not part of the wheel, so you can paint the whole tyre black before fitting. The wheels did have a step on the inner faces. The tyres were pushed against a metal rim almost the width of the tyre, which stopped it rubbing against the track guide horns. I guess it's too late now though.
@NigelsModellingBench2 жыл бұрын
I have now realised this, and mention it in part 3. I still fitted the tyres as I wanted to make sure of a good joint between tyre and wheel. Saying that, there are pics on Prime Portal that show no ridge??
@memkiii2 жыл бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench I have a shot or two of wheels where the rubber ridge has worn away, and one with no obvious rim - which i believe is a later version but the majority of the photos seem to show rubber with a ridge and does seem to be what they are representing - so all good.

Hi Nigel, I’m surprised that there is no spring inside the shock absorber, I would have though there would had been one to give it some resistance, especially in 1/16 scale.

Great video Nigel, really enjoying the build. Just about to start mine. You are right about the square hole in the bottom of the bathtub being a moulding aid. Wow what small hands you got!I pre paint same area with Mr Metal Dark iron,so after weathering i can chip with a toothpick or wear paint back with blue flory sponge sander.The Mr metal is graphite based and quite tough.I' just about to 'button up' RFM stug G,not up to RFM usual standards.

Hiya Nigel, I am just re-watching this series for the second / third time before I start to build my Stug, what a great series.. Just wondering! you said, you painted the shock absorbers and the areas on the hull with lacquer paint (LP27) it does not look like you used any primer first. This seems a great idea to stop any of the grey plastic showing through. Can you please advise how durable is the lacquer paint without using a primer? I did not know this was acceptable to do.. Apologies if you have mentioned this somewhere and I have missed it!

Tamiya LP are designed to be used without primer if you want to.

Hi Nigel. I enjoy your videos. I have learned a lot by watching. This question does not pertain to this build, but do you know of any F 111 plastic model kits that have retractable landing gear? and also the P 51. As detailed as this tank is, I am like Alain Schmitt on the subject of springs. I will keep this in mind so when I build a tank that has shocks like these, I will add springs. See, I told you I learn from you. Keep up the good work.

@@NigelsModellingBench I've read from the camp experts that the official order was to move to a dark green base colour issued in late 1944 (November ?) as soon as paint stocks were used up. In any case, I suspect from early 1945, they used whatever paint they had to hand though.
