Are There Any Truly Major Licenses Left for DBD?

Dead by Daylight has added icons like Michael Myers, Ash Williams, and numerous Resident Evil characters over the years, but after the somewhat muted response to the Alien chapter, I feel like it's fair to ask: are there any licenses left that would truly shake the fanbase? There's room for debate one way or the other, so let's talk about it.

I think the issue with a lot of 2010s-2020s horror in terms of DBD is that most of these movies are more psychological. Something like that is far harder to adapt into DBD as opposed to a slasher

@@robofluff1449Could go off console copies. Check the percentage of players playing on steam to how many steam copies were sold, then check console copies and divide by the percentage given from the steam copies. Sure it would be exact but it’s a pretty fair way to calculate console player count.

Using business terms, I think dbd is reaching its “maturity” state. There’s gonna be a point where they will not be able to increase more unless they create a whole new project or expand their modes. I also think that there’s a lot of options to expand such as Terrifier, FNAF, the shinnin, F13 but at the end of the day Is what trends are going for. For example idk if y’all remember but 2012-2014 was full of games that u had to take decisions and that was the trend followed, if a game like that released now it will not peak much

2006 Zoomer here. I believe I was born in the perfect spot where I’ve grown to appreciate the older stuff by watching it in my childhood, it’s nostalgic to me in the same way it may be for older people. However, since I did get the chance to get into these newer icons as well that older people may not have bothered to get into, I’m able to appreciate these icons without thinking they’re childish. So from where I sit, I want both old and new. My biggest license I’d like to see would be, in order IT, FNaF, Friday the 13th, Slenderman, and Predator.

I just want the 'The Terminator' and 'The Thing' added. I think 'The Thing' wouldn't be completely useless against SWFs if they added 4 bots to act as extra survivors. These bots would mimic the skins of the real survivors but also be harmless to the real survivors. The real survivors wouldn't know if the extra survivor was a bot or the killer.

The Thing might be more likely than you think, there’s a game called Pinball M coming out in a few days (A Pinball FX spin-off) and TWO MONTHS AGO they announced they’d be a Dead by Daylight table and Chucky table and their next announced licensed table by them was The Thing so the licence is definitely obtainable! (The other was Duke Nukem which doesn’t really fit in Dead by Daylight).

Obviously, I cannot speak for the public (and I already play DbD so... whatever) but IT, FNAF, Slenderman, Jason, Portal (i dunno how itd work but itd be cool) are a few licenses I think could definitely bring in a LOT of people. But along with new game modes such as 2v8, prophunt. Whatever... would also probably bring back those who may have gotten bored of DbD's repetitiveness.

I'm 18, I personally love older horror films and franchises, my two most wanted licenses were Alien and Chucky and now both are in the game, the only modern licenses I think I'd like to be added would be TLOU and maybe Terrifier, hell I think a Postal chapter could work pretty well (Another chapter I've had an idea about but will most likely never happen would be A Weeknd chapter) and ofc fnaf would probably bring in a huge amount of players but with the license renewed I wouldn't be opposed to a second ST chapter

TLoU probably won't come because Sony is super greedy and won't share that across other console platforms (See the Avengers game and how Spider-man was handled).

Been saying the same thing about fnaf for awhile... it's one of the few franchises that's been renewed so many times and had positive feedback every single time. I honestly expected this new movie to be a massive flop but it's actually insane how much profit and positivity from the audience around the world it got compared to what was expected. I'm a 2007 baby but I still have massive love for the classics thanks to my parents which I bet a lot of people in my generation can relate to. The classics are great but at some point we really do need something new and fnaf seems to be the only new shiny coin because let's be honest, all of the fairly recent horror movies kind of suck.

If we're talking unusual big hitters for younger generations Fnaf & Slenderman are dead obvious... but I've got a few other ideas. LoZ, SCP, LoL, LotR, and a... unique celebrity choice. 1. Legend of Zelda: Imo it'd be a toss up between P!Ganon from ToTK, the safe option, or the classic Dead Hand... or the Twilight Beast from TP. They've all got the lore, power material, map choice, and music to make excellent killers. I'd personally want Twilight Beast, the sheer joy I'd get from their music and seeing maps drowned in twilight can't be described by words. 2. SCP: Packed to the brim with horror of every variety, the SCP Foundation's got it all. Sure there's the more well known SCPs, but taking the opportunity to manifest something like "The Flesh That Hates" or "The Hanged King" would be maddeningly cool. There's also no shortage of how many SCPs could be mix and matched for killers, perks, and maps. Lord Blackwood would also be a perfect survivor given his dimensional travels. 3. League of Legend: Standalone, mapped, with a survivor, or just paragraphed, Fiddlesticks isn't just tied to a popular IP, his concept is mortifying but heavily reliant on voice lines. Handled properly and given plentiful voice lines to torment survivors. If you don't know, Trailer + Quotes, 7m of distilled horror. His theme uses screams as instrumentals too. 4. Lord of the Rings: The sheer popularity of this title cannot be understated. It may not be pure horror, it's still got solid killers to pick from. License rights might be a challenge though :( 5. Vtuber: Risky but similar to Cage, collaborating with a noncontroversial, reliable, safe Vtuber with reasonable avatar & lore would be huge advertising. Regarding Hololive, they actually pull crossovers quite often so a liscense wouldn't be impossible to get, but not sure how the overall DbD community would react. Also, Monokuma for Chucky... I want. It wont happen though💔

One thing I think would be cool that DBD hasn't done yet (but not a needle mover) is one of those "psycho high schooler" Killers. Carrie 1976 immediately comes to mind, but it would hard to get the license for that consider how funny people are about Child Killers/Killing in a video game. Gaming wise, I can't really think of anything outside of FNAF. If Capcom got another spot again, Jack Baker or Lady Dimetrescu could be needle movers. It fits in the late 2010-2020 era so zoomers would be into it and (Lady D especially for obvious reasons) help revitalized RE and are extremely popular. If I was a betting man, Lady D would be my pick

Honestly, I don't think it matters if they run out of new licences. We've seen before that BHVR don't mind adding more than one killer per licence seen with Wesker and Nemesis. If there are no more new licences they can just add another killer from an already obtained license. ie stranger things, resident evil and silent hill are examples with more than just one enemy. If FNAF does get added there is potential for multiple different killers like spingtrap, marionette or even one of the Animatronics

I think the biggest reason why we never got FNAF in dbd is because we never had any proper survivor model, we only had the protagonist's name. But now that the movie came out we have so many characters that it would be a crime not to see Springtrap come to the game with at least Mike and Vanessa soon.

Now that we have actual protagonists instead of a Yoichi situation, there is a way bigger chance of getting this license.

I like older horror. But I feel like a large portion of their issue is for balancing reasons they can’t quite capture the feel of some of these killers in their movies. The Xenomorph is one of those horror movie villains you always feel is lurking around the corner waiting to just lunge out and kill you. It’s not a chase character. Seeing it in its full size running at you isn’t as scary as seeing glimpses of it and the remains of its previous victims. You don’t really see tbe xenomorph fully in Alien until the end and the same thing goes for Alien:Isolation. I think the real issue is Dbd is fundamentally about slasher characters. Dope who’d chase you and stab you and brutally cut your head off and mount it on a wall. And in all honesty, they got most of, if not all the good ones in the game already. So unless new slasher series get made, Dbd is kinda running on borrowed time with their killers

I would love new game modes, especially 2v8 or a causal mode. I don't like having to try my ass off every single match. I'm a zoomer (turning 20 in '24) and honestly the only reason I got into horror was dbd and the reason I got into dbd was because I was into video games and it was a fun game. I think some of the big needle movers would be obviously fnaf I grew up on fnaf it's such an interesting series (I understand the Scott cawthon gripes I rly do I'm a progressive but he's not explicitly a jk Rowling type) , I think M3gan would be a cool license to add, and I think something from a more modern horror franchise like (the one I prefer) Insidious or The Conjuring would be huge.

My top three licenses would be Jason (Friday 13th) Slenderman (Slender and the 7 pages) and Freddy and Co. (FNAF). Jason- could have multiple different weapons but have a limited number of uses per each weapon and have to go to a locker to get a different weapon. Slenderman- moves super slow and has to use a blink ability to traverse around, some of the gens are locked at the start and the survivors have to find pages in lockers to unlock them, as the pages are found Slender gets faster/stronger. FNAF cast. 4 animatronics start on the map and the killer can choose which one to “possess” while the others sit idle while not in use. The survivors could possess a non in use suit (kinda like Springtrap). Just some food for thought.

So I come from identity V and they have a bunch of game modes! The best 2 are competitive and Tarot cards. Competitive is where you get a premade of 5 characters(4 survivors and a killer) and go against another squad. Whoever gets the most escapes wins. Tarot is similair , where it is 1 killer and 3 survivors. However one survivor is the king, and whoever can kill the enemy king first wins. These game modes are revolutionary but having that variety makes everything feel so much more fun! Dbd needs to get this. They’ve spoken with the identity v team in the past, why not have them help you make the game modes. And if it’s a copywriter thing… well you just made 2v8 so clearly it’s not since identity v has had that basically since launch

2002 zoomer here. I can see what you’re saying, and I agree. HOWEVER, I have also been playing DBD since 2019. I wouldn’t be surprised if plenty of players, like me, have experienced burnout. Or are moving forward in life and it’s getting stressful and harder to manage. That’s my two cents. As well as the fact that killer powers have been kinda bad lately until now with Chucky Regarding marketing toward people my age, yes. FNAF would do NUMBERS. That would be the biggest one. I would then say Outlast and Until Dawn. However, I want to mention as well that a lot of 90’s kids say “only 90’s kids remember this” when us 2000’s kids do too. That also extends into older media I’d say, as we get interest and can easily watch older movies. So yes, I also still think Jason and Predator would do great too. Further, as for more recent licenses, notice how Until Dawn and Outlast are both other video games. I think that’s the market DBD needs to look at more as well. Dead Space, Metal Gear, Dead Rising, DMC. All of those could fit I think. Then of course you could go nuts and do Mortal Kombat if you so desire (I wouldn’t enjoy it as much personally but I also won’t deny I still think it would be cool) Lastly. I know this will never happen. At least not soon. But a lot of zoomers grew up with superheroes. We had Spider-Man, Batman, Teen Titans, Ben 10, etc. I know stuff like that won’t make it, at least not anytime soon, but I also think it would be a good shakeup. Adding Joker as a killer would be insane and could bring over another type of consumer with comic readers. Of course they could also do more anime/manga stuff too. But don’t ignore western comics either. Joker would absolutely be a big one that would bring a lot of people. Venom or Carnage too (I’d personally LOVE Doctor Doom but I think nerfing him would be worse than nerfing Freddy or Nemesis). TL;DR. ABSOLUTELY FNAF. Add more video game licenses as well since that’s where us zoomers are getting most of our entertainment, but keep in mind that zoomers like older things too. And BHVR should also try adding comic characters like Joker Also finally last point. I like to mention any chance I get that I’d love The Crow as a survivor. I know it wouldn’t do numbers but I’d love it. Especially if they go with the movie version and play around with the bird as a “pet” type perk (would fly away when in chase so animal abuse wouldn’t have to be worried about). More specifically, I imagine the “pet” could act as a scout or something. Idk, I think it could help boost the chapter more by introducing a new mechanic

I think that with alien what it caused not a super star reception was skull merchant being linked so hard to the conspiracy theory that she was supposed to he predator. And since Alien and predator are 2 franchises that are heavily linked I think skull merchant left a bad taste in players mouths since she was really hated

I think the only reason people crap on the idea of FNAF coming to DBD is because its not "their era". You see this idea that its only kids that like it throw around, which isnt true. And The biggest needle movers for DBD were stranger things and resident evil. Newer IPs and FNAF is a new IP thats bigger than both of them. I think some people, namely the devs, need to realize that the big name slashers of the 80s just arent as relevant anymore as they think. People might know the names, but they also dont care.

The more the merrier when it comes to licenses. DBD has the entire genre of horror and countless characters people would love to play in DBD. Without that selling point, DBD would be dead. It's stuff like the barrier of entry (you need to spend a ton of money if you want a good variety of characters and the meta perks to build them with), the balancing that still needs work, and half-assed/controversial original releases like the skull merchant that are scaring players away.

Gotta say, I completely disagree with your point about Alien being more relevant than Chucky for gen Z. Alien was massively influential, but its presence is more of historic importance than something new to appreciate, which to younger audiences makes it look more generic. Chucky was surprisingly progressive and ridiculous for its time, and was initially dismissed for that reason. Now, it's had a resurgence in popularity thanks to the show and how much it stands out compared to any other horror franchise. It's not even a debate, to Gen Z, Chucky is the exact kind of chapter they would be interested in, even factoring in how any strong killer on release will be decently popular.

IMO the tail attack nerf ruined the Alien killer, they’re just not very fun to use anymore. But anyway I think FNAF would be the biggest potential for new players followed by Friday the 13th and Jurassic Park and then there’s a lot of cool franchises but nothing that would have a HUGE following that’d bring in new players unless there’s an unexpected surprise like Harry Potter or something.

Well, there's Predator, actual Freddy Krueger (not the remake version), Jason, Candyman, the Thing and Terminator. You could bring in classic monsters like Frankenstein or Dracula (but they're a bit too old for DBD's fanbase). You have Stephen King villains like Pennywise and Jack Torrance (The Shining). There's Bioshock. They could try the Walking Dead, but that may need to be just survivors as a plain old regular walker would be meh as a killer. I suppose you could have a horde of zombies roaming the map, and you take control over specific individuals but that'd be no different than just having a bunch of Nemesis zombies roaming the map. You could have Negan as a Trickster skin but that's pushing it. You could delve into comic book villains if you squint real hard, like the Joker, Scarecrow or someone like that. And there's the ones that fans have speculated about for a while, including FNAF and (the more goofy option) Scooby Doo. Then there's internet horror that they could dive into. For example they could do a Backrooms chapter. I personally think the SCP foundation has a lot of potential, but is very niche. IMO getting the license is only half the battle, as you have to make then fun to play as *and* against. It doesn't matter if you get FNAF if they're very weak and boring to play. Wesker and Chucky are older IPs that nobody really cares for in 2023. Nobody is asking "when's the next Chucky movie" and "what's happening with Wesker in RE remakes?" But they're FUN to play which is why despite that, they're popular in DBD. I think if they get any license, and make the characters unbelievably fun to play as and against, it'll still be crazy popular and get new fans. There are still some options, but those options are rapidly dwindling and losing traction with a younger audience. They may have to rely more on creating unique original killers.

Zoomer here, I was born in 2002 so I do have a great love and appreciation for the classic horrors (I would absolutely die for a Friday the 13th chapter), but I have to say you hit the nail on the head with this one, for so long I have been waiting for some representation from when I grew up, and I know people have hang-ups about fnaf in dbd but the thing is I was 12 when the first game released and now I am 21, I grew up with this series and it's what jumped started my love for horror, while I will always love a new addition of a classic iconic killer I wish they would branch out more.

I think that you are right on the money with appealing to the newer generation. I think a license like quiet place or Annabelle would do quite good. Also I’m not sure what to think about the 2v8. I’m thinking a prop hunt would be better. I just don’t see the perks and addons moving over to the 2v8 properly.

i personally adore the original chapters as much as most license chapters! there is a handful of licenses that i gen would be so hyped for the biggest ones being until dawn, dracula if we're counting that, scooby doo (skins + map) etc etc i know a lot of people want fnaf that's definitely something i can see happening someday still hoping for an original werewolf someday

Most newer slashers/horror/monster movies and shows dont have a compelling monster/killer/victim dynamic that can reasonablely turned into a killer. Most of the stuff ive seen recently has been, nothing special white man stalks and kills teenagers with a supernatural twist (time travel, freaky friday, time loop), parody horror thats consistently awful. The only decent horror ive seen recently are psychological and/or supernatural. Like, the main antagonist in talk to me is a hand statue, the main villian in the black phone is a child killer with the power of having a basement whos main foil is a child, happy death day, freaky, totally killer are the aforementioned white dude killer with a supernatural twist that they dont even control. Terrifier and fnaf are one of the few movies/shows/games of recent years I can see being turned into a killer AND survivors. There are a few game killer/monsters i could see but i dont feel like getting those are reasonable. Silent hill and resident evil are MASSIVE horror games that have movie counter-parts that make a cross over eaiser. Like id love somehow The evil within, amnesia, etc. To be chapters but i dont see that happening. However. Creepypasta killers/monster have been a staple in horror as of late, if somehow getting the artist of them to team up thats be cool, though I feel like thats more red tape to be crossed.

I think something important to consider as well is video game licenses vs film licenses. I think films may be more iconic at large but just because you play DBD doesn’t mean you watch a lot of movies. But you’re already proven to be a video game player, so I think video game crossovers are an easier sell. I’m sure way more people are familiar with the xenomorph than resident evil, but resident evil is a more immediately relevant property for DBD being another game.

I kinda feel like one of the reasons why Alien chapter isn't that succsesfull, is because dbd already has pretty much every possible customer from the movie market. I think that there is a really low amount of horror movie fans that don't play dbd already. And while adding more zoomer targeted chapters like It or Terrifier might get some new customers, I don't think it would be huge. So I think that licenses that would get more people playing the game are the ones that originate from mediums that are a bit underused in dbd like video games, anime and manga, internet horrors (ARGs and such) or maybe even some stage plays.

23 years old guy here, and I gotta say... I agree with some of the things you said here. My introduction to horror was Slender, and since after finding out about it and playing the og game, I started growing a huge interest in the genre, and I got where I am today! Slender and FNaF are easily my two most wanted licenses, since... One of them introduced me to horror lol, and the other is a franchise that I still love to this day after playing it in its first month of live, so yeah lol. For slenderman, I think it can work pretty well, and that there are no issues when it comes to the whole "he never grabs" survivors issue Cote brought up years ago, like cmon... we just saw how they handled the Chucky grabbing animation lmao, if they made that work, they can easily make slender work too. As for FNaF, I fell in love with the series since the first game during august 2014 thanks to markiplier lol, and to this day, I still love the series, and I really enjoyed the movie, so yeah, I would love to see Springtrap/Afton as a killer. But my main issue is... how could he even attack in DbD...?

Im an earlier gen z and been a huge horror fan since i was a kid. I like all kinds of horror and theres many characters they can put in but as discussed everywhere there are several questions how popular are they? Is it good enough to be a chapter or a simple reskin? And do they fit dbd's functionality ? I made a wish list years ago and most came but a few killers are missing. Some new additions got added to my list but they are niche. Pennywise is my first choice then Jason then Candy man and lastly predator. They all are positive from the questions above. Honorable mention as a chapter is springtrap and jack Torrance but they aren't high on my list. I like the characters but not my favorites always felt big horror franchises/characters above-mentioned had a bigger impact in horror and dbd. Licensed horror movie characters out number tv show/game characters for a reason. Some characters are good enough as skins if they grow in popularity. I would like pearl from pearl/x as a huntress skin but they would have to make her smaller and change animations/voice lines. Pearl is too niche at the moment. With Victor and chucky being in dbd little guys have a chance but not coming anytime soon. They would simply be chapters that act as paragraphs that are surprises. Sam from trick r treat, leprechaun, and maybe a gremlin could happen. In the end dbd will run dry of licenses but cryptids, folklore, urban legends, and creepypastas/scps(some are public domian so thats why they are mentioned if not they can simply make charactes inspired by them. For example bubba had hillbilly or the ripper being based from the murderer jack the ripper from identity v which dbd helped create.) will keep the killer roster going its just the devs have to use their imagination.

i really agree with the gameplay variety sentiment. there are so many killers that could benefit from changing the rules of the trial (freddy rework #3 please) i'd love for each trial to almost be a different game just with the same survivor movement mechanics, and balancing could be managed a little easier if they had more things to change. they have huge opportunities with incorporating gameplay elements of game licenses, or modifying the objective for other killers. idk i think it would be a fun change of pace but it would definitely throw off some players that enjoy DBD for its core gameplay.

I think the grabber from black phone could work, hes not supernatural but i could see him being a "prop" killer like freddy and sadako with phones around the map ringing that you have to answer, maybe hes perma stealthed until you answer a ringing phone and then once you do it reveals his position to you and he sees your position

I’m not even a dbd player but I’ve thought about getting into the game, chucky kinda makes me want to get it but something that 100% would get me to buy both the game and bundle, is fnaf. I’m glad that it’s in the conversation for “runner up” franchise people want in this game. I’m not even a hardcore fan of fnaf but that just shows it will bring people to the game. They could add Berserk as a license, with Griffith as a killer who could turn into Femto after a survivor activates a Behelit. When the Trial starts, 3 Behelits spawns on the map and are hidden. These Behelits can be grabbed by a survivor but they cannot activate it until they reach a certain level of "Despair". A survivor can only activate their Behelit if they've been put in the Dying State twice, if they're in the Injured State (after being hooked twice) or if they're hooked (during the Struggle Phase). When a player activate their Behelit, every players are sent to the Astral World. Griffith transforms into Femto, is summoned alongside the other Godhand as they appear infront of that survivor to grant their wish in exchange for a sacrifice. This wish ranges between healing them, resetting their hook count to zero or to escape the Trial entirely. But the more important the wish is, the more survivors are "Branded" for sacrifice for the remainder of the Trial and the longer the survivors stay within the Astral Realm, the player who sacrified another survivor will be immuned to Femto, and not be hunted down by the other demons for the duration of that phase in the Astral World. If that survivor doesn't make a wish, they will see themselves be "Branded" for sacrifice. The sacrificed survivors are then hunted down by demons (they are mechanically similar to the zombies that roam the map when playing against the Nemesis and the Knight's guards). After a certain period of time, the survivors and Griffith are teleported back on the regular map (at random locations. Griffith is never close to a survivor when they return to the regular map). On the regular map, a "Branded" survivor will scream in pain if they're in the Injured State and too close to Griffith. And on the Astral World, a "Branded" survivor will scream in pain if they're too close to Femto, no matter in they're in Healthy State, Injured State, or in the Dying State. When in a chase, the pain of being too close to a Godhand is so immense for a "Branded" survivor that they suffer from the "Deep Wounds" Status Effect, the "Deep Wounds" Status Effect goes away when not in a chase. When on the Astral World, Griffith turns into Femto and gains great power. After appearing infront of the survivor who activated their Behelit, Femto and the other Godhand can grant that survivor their wish if they sacrifice another survivor. After that, Femto soars above the terrain and can choose where he'll land. In that phase, Femto gains greatly increased attack range and movement speed. Femto can hold the M1 button to charge his attack, when fully charged, Femto clenches his fist and tears the fabric of time and space to crush a certain location (this location is represented by a sphere that Femto can see), if a survivor is struck, they're directly put in the Dying State. Femto can hold the M2 button to charge a new ability, when fully charged, Femto can select a area to create a hole of void, when selected, Femto kneels down on the ground and casts a spell to undo the terrain, causing a massive hole to appear. If a survivor stand near the hole, they'll be teleported infront of Femto. When leaving the Astral World, Femto turns back into Griffith.
