When Truman saw the picture of his wedding day and saw his “wife” had her fingers crossed, you seemed a little confused. But, at least in the US, a person crosses their fingers when they are making a promise that they don’t mean, or don’t intend to keep. Which means to her, the wedding wasn’t real.

Ironically, we have evolved entertainment from scripted to reality tv to watching people react to entertainment. It was only a couple of years ago that I found that I was entertained by watching something (initially Wynona Earp) then watching people react to watching something. It was from there that I started watching people react to movies including at this site. I doubt anybody saw that coming when they invented the television.

yeah, I find 'content' like this kind of addictive if the person doing it is somewhat entertaining and/or charismatic like dasha is (and she was smart to put 'of Russia' in her name as the different cultural frame of reference is a nice gimmick) but at the same time I'm like, wtf am I doing this is weird and perverse and dystopian like a creature eating itself. I think in a way it's a kind of wallowing nostalgia, seeing someone react to a movie for the first time lets you relive your own memories of doing so and vicariously feel those emotions again

In my opinion, it's an inevitable reaction to our shift to watching entertainment alone. We used to only be able to watch movies in theaters, and the first TV-watching was typically a family affair due to the limited shows available combined with no more than one screen per household. However, more and more of us now watch alone -- and yet we're social creatures. We like to enjoy things together. Watching a Reactor is like sharing a favorite show with a best friend who's never seen it before and enjoying their experience secondhand. (Helvete_Ingres, there's nothing "weird and perverse and dystopian" about that. It's just human! 😊)

For a slightly different perspective - everything and everyone was put there by a "benevolent" god - Christof - to give Truman a perfect life...accoring to Christof Christof has a divine plan for Truman's life and manipulates Truman's reality in order to get Truman to live out the script Christof has written for him. So in a way, the movie is a commentary on the idea of life having a divine plan - and the hollowness of such a life. Truman doesn't want to live out someone else's script, to realize someone else's purpose for him. Once he realizes that he is living out Christof's divine plan, Truman rejects both the plan and Christof in order to live his life on his own terms, to write his own script, to be free from his God and the world made for him.

This is one of the most unbelievably amazing movies I’ve ever seen. Everything from the story, the way Truman starts to make sense of little inconsistencies in his world, the score, the ACTING. I love Jim Carrey, he’s a great comedy actor and still brought that to the role, but this is the movie I realized just how versatile he is, he perfectly blended his natural talent for comedy with drama and it made him so perfect for a character like this. Such an underrated movie too, not many reactors have reacted to this so I’m always happy when they do.

@helvete_ingres4717
@helvete_ingres4717 2 жыл бұрын
@@xtldc yyou've got the people in the cave, like the people in the matrix they believe it's real. One day one of them becomes wiser ('philosophy' = love of wisdom) and comes to the realisation that all they perceive is naught but shadows projected onto the cave wall and nothing of it is truly real or possesses . This man becomes a philosopher, he takes it upon himself to leave the cave in search of true knowledge, he gets to see the Sun which is the source of all that can be seen, *including* shadows. It's not quite that the shadows are just 'not real', you still need sunlight to see them - but they don't exist in themselves, they're derived from a more fundamental reality. And when you look directly AT the Sun, there are no shadows, only light. But the philosopher, having become enlightened, what does he do next? How can he share or teach the knowledge of truth he has attained? He might like to show his people back in the cave how they too can see the light, but how exactly does he communicate this? Can it even be done? What if the people aren't lovers of wisdom (ie. aren't philosophers), what if they only love the darkness and the shadows? You can see it in light of the most recurring and probably the most fundamental question in all of Plato's philosophical inquiries (particularly in the Republic, where the allegory of the cave comes from) - which is, can wisdom/knowledge be taught? It's also contextualised by Plato's metaphysical theory of 'eidos'(ideas) or more commonly 'Forms'. The Sun in the allegory, then, is what Plato called the Form of the Good, which basically lost an 'o' and made its way into the Christian theological tradition via the Neoplatonists

@@xtldc From what I understand originally it was meant as a way of justifying to the Greek senate the cabinet position of the philosopher in the senate. Think of it like if the government had to make budget cuts cause the nation was falling apart and asked all the departments to plea their case. Department of transportation, Department of security, department of sanitation and so on. Plato did a series of writings for the department of philosophy back then with the conclusion that the role of the philosopher was to show the people what is real.

What gets me about the ending, is realizing that his life isn't going to be that much better on the outside. He's the most famous man in the world, and everyone wants to see him and see what he's up to (as they have for the past 30 years). He'd be surrounded by paparazzi the first moment he gets into the real world. And they will keep on following him. The cameras are just not as hidden anymore. He will never have real privacy. Even if he finds love, can he ever trust anybody? Even his best friend manipulated and used him. His own "parents" and "wife" used him. He can never live a normal life. Happy ending for a movie, but not a happy ending for the man.

When Truman was looking at the wedding photos, the actress who was playing his wife in the Truman show had her fingers crossed. In some places, this is a sign meant to show that the person is lying when making a statement or promise. One theory on how this practice came about is that when Christianity was just forming and outlawed, people would have to lie about being Christian.One of the Ten Commandments is “do not testify falsely against your neighbour”-or, put simply, do not lie. It is speculated that Christians started making the cross symbol with their fingers when lying to protect themselves against God’s wrath for breaking one of the commandments. As to when this started, it has been speculated that it dates all the way back to the beginnings of Christianity the same as the Ichthys- when Christians had to lie about being Christians since the religion was outlawed, often under penalty of death. However, as with the “luck” finger crossing, direct evidence is hard to come by, so we’re left with educated theories. Another theory is that crossing your fingers when lying evolved from crossing your fingers for luck. In this case, you would be silently asking for luck in getting away with the lie. This is also entirely plausible, but we can’t be certain which theory is actually correct (if either).

My grandmother, my younger brother and I saw The Truman Show at the cinema when it was first released. My brother and I thought it was great - what an amazing concept. However, my grandmother couldn't make any sense of the film. It went right over her head. And apparently, one of her friends who was of a similar age went to see the film on another occasion and it sounded like she was just as confused. Well it was clear as day for me. I don't know if it's a generational thing or not. I know that there are people who find Back To The Future 2 to be really confusing. I guess it would be if you haven't previously seen the first film. Actually, when we saw the original Back To The Future on the big screen with some school classmates in 1985, there was a member of our group who was confused about some aspect of the film. I can't recall exactly what that was.

This film is about a lot of things but at its core it’s about how we will choose to live a real life with all its risks than live in a secure fantasy. I love the last few seconds of the film where once the show is over the two security guards immediately start looking for something else to watch. It’s a great commentary on our collective attention span and our fickle loyalties.

I love movies like "Matrix" or "The Truman Show", which are not only good entertainment, but tell us more than you think at first moment and inspire people even in the so-called real world to question the "reality" (?) presented by media every day, just as happy to see this effect in people who just watch such a movie. Btw, John Carpenter's "They Live" goes in the same direction, really a recommendable film.

When you cross your fingers when you say something it means you don't mean it. I guess that's not a thing in Russia. So when she said "I do" at her wedding crossing her fingers means she doesn't love him.

This movie has one of the most unique concepts of the last 30 years and I was captivated from beginning to end when I saw it originally. People have talked about a sequel but where would they go with it? I suppose we could see him reunite with his true love and that would be nice, but I think they should just leave it alone as it is. Can you imagine using traumatic life experiences like losing his father in a drowning accident in order to keep him from trying to escape? Wow. Great movie.

A sequel could be a documentary format speculating about Truman & Sylvia. Footage collected from traffic cameras, ATM cameras, security cameras, cellphones; & having accidentally caught him in the background of news footage. And the paparazzi tailing them. Headlines tell us of Christof's legal woes; & how fan pushback forced the studio to pay Truman 30 years' back pay.

Very good reaction, it's easy to get sucked into Truman's world. I recommend watching the 1982 movie "Blade Runner" which may also stir your sympathies for some of the characters.

Definitely one of my favorite movies. Dasha of Russia...you are preciously perfect. Some of my friends and I like to play a game where we ask "who would have the biggest law suit" or "who would need the most therapy" at the end of a story. The kids from Jurassic Park would definitely need to seek help when they got back to the main land and Truman would have an amazing lawsuite. I'd love to know if you can think of other movies where legal or phychological help would be warranted.

One of Jim Carrey's best movie roles before he got famous in other movies this is one of my favorite movies of Jim Carrey's that's a super serious movie and an interesting plot glad you enjoyed it it's quite an interesting journey terrifying movie once you figured out the storyline to it and he had no idea your reaction was perfect to this movie most people don't even get the concept of the movie when people watch it and react to it

You're right that this is one of the best Carrey performances, but this movie was well after he became a gigantic movie star. In 1994 alone, he had 3 blockbuster films, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. In 1995, he played The Riddler in Batman Forever and in 1996 he received one of the biggest film contracts of all time for The Cable Guy.

4:25 In scenes like this one, in lots of movies and TV shows, the wrongness of the moon always jumps out at me. The sun is below the horizon and the entire sky is black, so, that close to the horizon, the BOTTOM part of the moon should be lit, instead of the LEFT part. Christof should have brought in an astronomer to help compose the heavens. If you like Jim Carrey, he's in top form in the movie "Liar, Liar". I love your reactions, Dasha! Keep them coming!

This film is a metaphor. Truman, the 'true man', rejects the tyranny of Christof (Christ), even though that tyranny is 'loving', in favor of personal agency.
@jeffdee
@jeffdee 2 жыл бұрын
@Atheos B. Sapien I put the word loving in scare quotes on purpose, because I agree with you. Christof in the film seems to think he's being kind and loving to Truman, but he's not. He's a tyrant. Truman understands that, which is why he rejects Christof's 'love', and leaves.
