If they're high, you have a better chance of success, if they're low, not so much. It's practically a science, the same applies to situations from getting a girl to getting good shots in a basketball game. Skill is also a factor, even so they're motivated by how you expect to perform. As far as this game goes, Dashie has no excuse to be in the place he ended up in. No Blue Shell dicked him in any part of the grand prix and he had ample time to recover from getting hit from other items, him sliding off Rainbow Road cost him a medal spot at the end.
