Very much so. For people who haven't experienced it, there's also a common misconception that anyone who didn't lose their house and is now returning is "fine". But in reality, surviving a natural disaster is deeply traumatic even for people who escaped the obvious damage. Its a loss of safety in your place that is supposed to be safe. So on top of people who HAVE lost everything, the people who haven't lost anything but COULD have, often tend to overlook their own trauma. The whole experience of having your home under threat is...truly difficult to explain. I can't even pretend to know it myself, I just worked emergency services long enough to have learned about the farther reaches of trauma beyond the obvious. I've always loved the ring theory, it's meant for grief but applies to everything. You offer support inwards towards the rings of people most affected, and dump your own sorrow outwards asking for support from people in the outer rings who are less affected. Its a nice way of balancing "everyone needs support, but make sure you're asking the right people for support instead of people who don't have the bandwidth". Big big hugs to all affected, near and far from the fires, from the most affected all the way to the people coming home safely who still feel that odd sense of having their safety violated. So many hugs.

Embers from OwlCity ~ lyrics: There were days when each hour was a war I fought to survive There were nights full of nightmares and I dreaded closing my eyes There were skies that burst open with a downpour to drown me alive But the world took *a spark like a match in the dark* And the *fire* brought me to life So I'm fanning the *flames* to climb so high 'Cause there's no other way we can stay alive 'Cause we're *burning* bright As we all unite And when it's all said and done We'll shine like the sun *So don't let the fire die* And we'll watch the sky As it fills with light And though the *embers* are new Whatever you do, *just don't let the fire die* And you'll find there'll be mornings When the ashes and *embers* are cold But you'll fight with a passion And you'll never stop 'cause you know Yeah, you know, it gets better And your story is yet to be told Every push, every shove, every war, every love Yeah, the coals are beginning to glow So I'm fanning the *flames* to climb so high 'Cause there's no other way we can stay alive 'Cause we're *burning* bright As we all unite And when it's all said and done We'll shine like the sun *So don't let the fire die* And we'll watch the sky As it fills with light And though the *embers* are new Whatever you do, *just don't let the fire die* *Don't let the fire die* It gets better Just *don't let the fire die,* no 'Cause we're *burning* bright As we all unite And when it's all said and done We'll shine like the sun *So don't let the fire die* And we'll watch the sky As it fills with light And though the *embers* are new Whatever you do, *just don't let the fire die* *Don't let the FIRE die*

The fact that your instinct upon getting home and assessing the damage was to go out and help others and clear debris instead of just worrying about your own property says a hell of a lot about you as a person, Mark. Going out of your way and undoubtedly exhausting yourself manhandling a chainsaw for hours is absolutely nuts, and so few people would be willing to do it. Good on you, Mark!

Mark, as someone who was dead center in the eye of Hurricane Helene when it hit Asheville North Carolina, my family and I were trapped in our home with minimal access to supplies, no cell service, and no way to evacuate. It was people like you, who went out into the fray with their own equipment, who saved us. So, with all my heart, THANK YOU for doing what you did, and I am so sorry that your area is being afflicted with such devastation. You're experiencing nearly exactly what happened to me in terms of seeing such good will come from the community and seeing entire areas erased from home. The animal shelters were packed with displaced pets; donation centers that were packed. Hell, even McDonalds set up and was giving out free meals to people, which provided my first hot meal in weeks at the time. Thank you so much for putting back into the disaster zone. I know you're going to tell yourself that you're strong and you're fine but seeing this kind of shit and having such a close call with losing everything you have and know, is hard on the mind. Go find a resource for yourself in terms of mental health; talking about it will help. Please tell all your stories! I look forward to listening. Love from AVL, - LOCKE

While my family and I got lucky, Helene devastated much of my friends' and family's homes. My extended family closer to the harbor got at least four feet of flooding, my sister's teacher had to swim out of her home, and a friend's friend was trapped on her bed until firefighters arrived. It sucks hearing about what's going down in LA. Stay strong, Mark.

I got hit pretty hard by Helene in Georgia too. After the storm, seeing everyone come together to get people out of their houses and to clear roadways was definitely something I wish I could see more of(the helping part, not the disaster part). I know I made gas runs over 2 hours away for neighbors and family that were also affected just to try and help people gain some sense of normalcy after the storm. We definitely didn't get hit as hard as Asheville did, but even now we are still in the recovery process for majority of people around me. Being part of the relief effort definitely gave me a sense of pride in my community. I'm glad you and your family are safe after the storm, because the effects are definitely still in play even though its been a few months since.

Here where I live in Valencia, Spain, there was a huge flood (for our standard at least) a few months ago that has destroyed many houses, buildings, families and nature reserves; the crisis is still ongoing but support has basically stopped for the most part because politicians are too busy blaming eachother... In times like these, the regular, day to day citizens are the biggest blessing to people in situations like this. The huge amount of humanitarian add that has been provided by non-profit organisations and donations has been insane. I really hope everyone in LA who has been affected gets as much support as needed; much love from Spain.

While not a fire, as a survivor of a severe natural disaster, your help and the help of many others is so valuable to recovery. My area did little to help individuals. It was the people and volunteers who made a world of difference. Stay safe Mark, and thank you for your help.

I wasn't in the disaster I'm about to mention personally but I read about it constantly from another state and abroad. So back in late July of 2022, my grandfather's house in southeastern Kentucky got hit by a sudden unexpected flood that did A LOT of damage to numerous Appalachian communities. I'll always remember how my grandfather reacted to it: he was upset because he lost roughly 1/3 or more of his possessions, blessed because he and his dogs were unharmed, and beyond grateful for the volunteers and community that helped him clean and rebuild while also dealing with their own damages. It was surreal seeing a school I went to devastated by the flood.

While yes, there’s absolutely some truth in that, there are also so many factors that play a role. You can see fire miles away depending on the location and how big it is. While yes, a huge fire you can see 15 miles away down wind from you is still a threat, it’s a different type of threat and evacuation is not always an immediate option. Evacuating is hard. Trying to decide what items you own are not worthy of trying to save is a huge mental toll. Sure you can start moving things immediately but that comes at a cost of time, money, and labor. I can say this from experience. I’ve had grass fires that burned a couple hundred acres 10-20 miles from my house and the flames were very visible but I still had to go to work that day and still slept in my bed knowing that I could get a knock on my door in the middle of the night if conditions changed. It’s not as simple as wildfire = leave.
@舞瑠-w1i
@舞瑠-w1i 7 сағат бұрын
@ you are completely correct and bring up some good points i hadn't thought about... but in the condition of high winds where you can see flames, wildfire does definitely equal leave.. at least in my eyes. i found it really interesting that you brought up the mental toll of deciding what items to take... i completely agree with you, and have never completely taken the time to process that part until you brought it up. aside from the loss itself, the memory of running through my home, trying to find my passport and wallet and etc. while understanding that everything i'm sorting through is about to be destroyed, is definitely a deeply scarring and painful one... and i believe that kind of experience and stress CAN be, even if you're able to return to your home safely afterwards... thank you for bringing light to one of the lesser-discussed parts of wildfire survival.

They had been spending a decade trying to take the land from native inhabitants who refused to give it up, but then once their lands have burned and they have literally no other choice because they need the money to survive. Did Oprah help? No. Her and her buddies came in and took so much of the land giving the people scraps. So much of Hawaii hasn't recovered because the average people living there can't anymore.

this is why mark is my favorite youtuber. he doesn’t do all this for the public or for his image, but just because he’s such a good, genuine guy. he’s a big content creator who truly loves his fandom and works so hard for everyone, and manages to be a youtuber and someone who actually feels like a human who exists outside of their videos. it might sound weird, but mark is like a role model to me. he’s been there for years, comforting and loving his audience like no other streamer. good luck mark, take your time. i hope you, amy, henry, and chica all stay safe during these horrible fires. thank you so much for doing everything you do.

I’m glad mark is doing fine. I got family over in LA and they didn’t have to evacuate but the fire was near their place. Sucks that a lot of people and families lost their homes and loved ones. I’m from LA so it struck me harder than I wanted it to. I don’t live there but what makes it worse is the people taking advantage of those who had to evacuate. I can’t even begin to imagine or describe the pain and suffering it would be, and I just hope that nobody else has to ever deal with those feelings again

Please don't stress yourself about regular videos, we'll be here when the emergency and whatever else you need to focus on is done. Your health and your safety matters more than any video. Stuff can be replaced, videos can be delayed, there's only one you. I've been watching since 2012 and hearing you talk about helping your community and your neighbours doesn't surprise me one bit. Your actions speak louder than anything else by helping and not cashing in by making content and directing your audience to help. This is our new plan. As someone who lives in Lake County, CA (for context, we’ve been effected by major wildfires that either started in the county or burned into the county, the first ones were in 2015 and we had at least one major wildfire each year from 2015 up to 2022-ish, maybe earlier or later) I’m really glad that there’s such an outpouring of support. I know how devastating wildfires can be especially with major windstorms. It’s bad enough when it’s out in the sticks but in a major city? My heart goes out to the people and families who have been impacted by the fires and the firefighters on the front lines. To those near the fires: be prepared and stay safe.

From napa, I’m 40…. Before 2015 napa and the surrounding counties never had fires like the ones we’ve seen since 2015. Fires would happen every once in a while but be under control and putout within hours….. When I was a kid this shit just didn’t happen, and it’s not cause we don’t know how to fight fires or how to prevent them, it’s cause of climate change and the massive increase of conditions suitable to create HORRIBLE fires…. It used to rain more, it used to be less dry, fire season wasn’t 9+ months, windstorms with 80mph winds didn’t happen with the frequency they do now…. So to answer your kind of question, no, lake county didn’t use to have fires like you have had since 2015, and specially not every year it happening in your county or the surrounding county for like 8 years in a row….. It sucks and just going to keep getting worse…. People who refuse to believe climate change is real are either stupid or purposely blind….
