I love how Feudalism's huge boost to Troop and Ship maintenance mimics each feudal lord being responsible for the care and upkeep of their respective forces, and lending them to their liege lord in times of war

PD on the back slots are great on fast aggressive ships because after the first pass all the fighters and bombers will be behind your ship chasing it. Also with Mortalens I love to use Electronic lance and pulse torpedoes or short ranged blasters, beams and tractor beam (no really! It's bit of a meme but it works on small fast ships that would otherwise maneuver out of the cone of fire). Torpedoes are great opening barrage, lance can disable components while fast ships with tractor beams and HyperDeny hold your prey in the sights and close for the blasters to finish the job. Their ships are great at aggressive fast strikes but will be at disadvantage in long slugfests or when your ships can't reach enemy carriers in time. Therefore, its good to have 2 smaller fleets to attack the enemy, 1 jumping in front and second one from the back. as the small enemy ships and fighters engage the first half, your second half jumps behind and hits their carriers and missile ships.

Sorry Das, gonna have to disagree on the Mortalen ship design. Swift Vectors enable them to turn quickly and so the smaller ships don't need rear facing weapons. The frigates are fast but you're right that they want to be used offensively, so I put a PD gun on the 270° heavy slot on the front and on one of the rear facing point, with rail guns everywhere else. You can stick a Concussion missile on instead of the rear railgun in case something gets behind you. Head deep down Railgun techs and Mortalen ships eat their competitors for breakfast, just remember to use that maneuvering speed to keep them out of danger, and remember that their marines are the best in the universe, and so Assault Pods are a no brainer too! I don't even bother with the torpedoes

Not just that, but Mortalen ships are fast, like the Ackdarians, but with even more aggressive firepower than the Boskarans. While the Boskarans have some very nice racial weapons, the Mortalen more than make up for it with speed and larger forward-firing arcs. The added combination of superior countermeasures and the racial Multilock make the Mortalen the most aggressive race. This is also a weakness; all of their ships are aggressive. If it comes down to a capital ship standoff slugfest, the Mortalen will be in a world of hurt.

for the cruisers and battleships the vector engine is quite useful once the fleets are in a melee, keeps all of the forward facing weapons on mortalen ships firing on the baddies i tend to spam railguns when i play them i only really use the torps on bombers and ion pd on the fighters

Whaaaa? The Swift Vector and subsequent engines are great, you can do some crazy micro in combat with a fast turn rate

Glad to see these tutorials. Never really got into ship design much in either DWU or DW2 so far. Might actually dip my toes into ship design next time I play, inspired by your analysis of the ships of each faction

I haven't played the game yet, just dw universe. That being said, you might just not like the vectors as much since it sounds like you enjoy hangers which I assume promotes long range combat. Being able to turn tighter in more of a knife fight however sounds extremely useful on the Mortalen ships. They sound like jousting ships with how everything is set up. Or maybe some kind of fast rotating phalanx? I'm just theorizing.

PD that face backwards are way more important than what you think as fighters will always try to get behind your ships. PD also are quite weak at most seeking weapons due to how PD work and have some bugs or ill intentioned mechanics. So don't discount direct PD facing backward, it might save you if you are up against allot of fighters. It is perfectly OK with interceptor missiles as well, but other PD work good here too. Vectoring engines are far more important than most people seem to realize as it will make the ships more nimble and able to move into positions to avoid enemy fire and thus reduce incoming fire. It also improve their ability to disengage when they need to do so. So these things are far more important than what you think. In addition to this they also provide a small countermeasure bonus as well, which also reduce incoming damage.
