See, most Sony DAT tapes from the 90s are made of the same metal evaporated used in Video-8, the only problem I've had was with a small tab that prevents the tape mechanism from opening, never experienced dirty heads... Maybe we never got that batch of tapes in Europe, even all Hi-8 work fine...
@12voltvids5 жыл бұрын
First of all DAT was a metal-P tape, not evaporated. The evaporated tapes were fine for the cameras that used the full size drums but very problematic on the TR series cameras (CCD TR81 for example) due to the smoothness of the tape. It tended to stick to the drum on the really compact cameras. Standard Sony 8mm tape was fine, it was the hi grade and Hi-8 tapes that had the binder problems. DAT tape wasn't as bad, but it also wasn't the high grade formulation. Metal E was used exclusively on MiniDV and HDV formats.

I have got Sony PCM-2500 DAT recorder. Everything seems to work as it should. However, there is a problem with playing certain DAT tapes. It sounds like during normal playback the playback speed is increased (pitch up) by about 1.5. However, it does not show on all tapes. Sony Prodata Plus PDP-125 tapes don`t show this at all. The worst case is with TDK DA-R12 tapes. As Sony tapes work fine it makes me to believe that there is incompatibility of this recorder with certain tapes. DAT machines sure are holding their value because it was the defacto studio production format for over 20 years and there are thousands of session recordings, demo recordings and mixed master and safety copies out there and as they no longer make new machines people with dat libraries are looking for backup machines. Same thing happens with beta VCRs. They go for a good price. A Bata is worth nothing to someone that has no tapes to play but if you have dozens of beta tapes of your family videos shot back in the 80s you need to transfer you too would pay 500 for a machine to do it because paying an archive service 20 a tape can get expensive if you have a bunch of tapes. I run an archive service and do tons of tapes for people in that situation who have small quantities of 8mm and beta tapes. For someone with many tapes acquiring a working machine is a better option and people with working machines for sale know this so that pushes the price way up.

@12voltvids5 жыл бұрын
DAT was a commercial success for the recording industry. It was the defacto standard for digital mastering for over 20 years. Every radio and TV station also used the format. The consumer machines were crippled with SCMS but the professional machines had no such nonsense. Before the internet and sending files was a reality, a musician could lay down tracks at home on his dat recorder and mail a perfect 1:1 copy to a band mate anywhere in the world, where they could work on it, add their part, mail back their work, and then mix down without them actually being in the same country. Andy Summers did just that, on his Jazz release Green Chimneys. He mailed the session tracks to Sting, and he laid down the vocals, mailed the tape back for mixing. (That was in the CD liner notes that they did it with DAT BTW.) The tapes are actually not that fragile. I have been using DAT for many, many years. My tapes all go back to the mid 80's and have hundreds of passes on them and the vast majority have no errors. Some of my dat tapes have hundreds of passes. They actually put less wear on the tape than VCR because the tape is only a 90' wrap.

@@sarasartori6859 Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) is a copy protection scheme that was created in response to the digital audio tape (DAT) invention, in order to prevent DAT recorders from making second-generation or serial copies. SCMS sets a "copy" bit in all copies, which prevents anyone from making further copies of those first copies. It does not, however, limit the number of first-generation copies made from a master.

333/5000 Regards. This model of DAT DTC-60ES brings from the factory a module of two LED lights in the cassette compartment but in all the videos I have seen of this model those LED lights do not turn on, I have this same DAT and the lights do not turn on either .. . why is this ? How do I make them turn on? Thank you.
@12voltvids5 жыл бұрын
I believe they were using incandescent bulbs and they are probably burnt out. My 75ed used incandescent and they burned out.

@@12voltvids Thank you very much for your prompt response. I have checked with the service manual and physically with the piece in my hands that the lighting is composed of 2 Minibright LED Series LN01401C LED lights and they are very difficult to find.

Sony made a recording machine with equal quality compared to the original mastering studio tapes.In fact was the music industry that decided the death of this recording format for commercial purposes just because for the most obvious reasons.

On my 75ES, the tape fully loads, then slightly unloads, displays CAUTION and refuses to do anything else.

Caution means there's humidity condensed in the head drum - Leave it powered on at the sunlight, maybe it disappears...

The wheater is controlled by god it is precisely as he wills it to be.
@12voltvids5 жыл бұрын
Actually it is controlled by heating of water by the sun, which evaporates, and forms clouds. Carbon dioxide that man pumps into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels traps the heat from the sun, which heats the globe up more, which melts the ice caps, to produce more water which evaporates in this hotter air and forms even bigger clouds. Clouds cause the air density to change, and eventually the moisture is released as rain. Of course Man is not the only producer of CO2. Active volcano's spew tons of CO2 and H2S into the air, and cows produce plenty of Methane also a greenhouse gas which traps heat. Now we can't control the natural occurring greenhouse gases (volcano's) but we spew plenty ourselves into the air. So this global warming not only makes the planet hotter, but also creates nastier storms, and boy oh boy have they been getting worse over the past couple of years.

@@golfman9290 But wrong. The Earth has been cyclically warming and cooling since time immemorial and trying to link the latest cycle to human activity is not possible. Postulating teleologically is NOT proof. All Dave's post actually "proves” is that the Earth would be too cold to support life without the greenhouse effect of water vapour.
