I have a lot of Sony DAT machines. Thanks to your videos I have the courage to attempt to fix some of mine. Deoxit really does help those little switches. I was able to get the caution error to go away. But then I played a tape for about 30 minutes and it returned. So I think I need to do a better job and take it apart further clean and re-lubricate everything. Thanks for all your videos.

Thank you, serviced mine fully just like your video, one fault remains on my deck tho, plays for a few seconds, tape counter increments fine then it just cuts out and stops, tape travel seems fine, my capstan motor had seized up was original fault, does not cut out in Pause mode, should mention it cuts out in fast FF REW too, suspecting capacitors in power supply feeding reel pulse sensors voltage, thanks for the great relaxing video, i,m a retired tech from the AV trade ...regards

You may want to look into a Mr. Cool DIY Mini Split heat pump for your workspace. It is expensive, but it's a do it yourself split system. Really neat product. I'd love to install one in my bedroom. I'm stuck with one of those portables that have all the noise-making guts inside. But, I can't sleep without it being almost frigid in the summer and near 80 Farenhight in the winter. I can not understand why I can't sleep in the summer heat if I have to crank the heat so high to sleep in the winter.

Same behavior from one of my 77ESs. Distortion, not finding the index, sometimes it doesn't even detect the recording frequency. And it's slow as a snail screwed to the floor when it comes to rewinding and fast-forwarding. I suspected a current drop on the motors so I checked the electronics, and everything's ok - I've never thought about checking the mechanical part. DOH! Thank you very much for this video. I'm going to tear the guy apart and I'm pretty sure I'll find the same defect. Might as well open the other one and prevent this from happening.

Hey buddy, been watching all your DAT videos and they have been extremely helpful with getting my Sony a6 player out of caution mode!! Can’t thank you enough for taking the time to make these videos.. my problem not is that the player only plays and records for 6-7 seconds at a time now😞 Would you have any helpful ideas on what I could try next to get it working properly? @@12voltvids that’s crazy because the take up reel was not moving and causing the “caution” message. I took the entire mech apart for the third time and cleaned the 2 switches again but this time I really worked them in and out then put it back together and it worked lol but only works for 6-7 seconds.. wonder if the reel sensors are dirty now🤔 think that would cause my issue? I’ve only taken the mech apart 5 times now 🤣 I’m getting pretty good at it lol

Loverly repair dave, works just like new :-D Such a cute little deck, well made and smart in operation. i enjoyed repairing mechanisms, although some were really crap in design. For big brakes i've used flat drive belts for pad replacement and cardboard strips for minor soft brakes. For old reel to reel it was bicycle/motorcycle innertubes cut into strips and bostik/uhu to keep it in place.

See, most Sony DAT tapes from the 90s are made of the same metal evaporated used in Video-8, the only problem I've had was with a small tab that prevents the tape mechanism from opening, never experienced dirty heads... Maybe we never got that batch of tapes in Europe, even all Hi-8 work fine...
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
First of all DAT was a metal-P tape, not evaporated. The evaporated tapes were fine for the cameras that used the full size drums but very problematic on the TR series cameras (CCD TR81 for example) due to the smoothness of the tape. It tended to stick to the drum on the really compact cameras. Standard Sony 8mm tape was fine, it was the hi grade and Hi-8 tapes that had the binder problems. DAT tape wasn't as bad, but it also wasn't the high grade formulation. Metal E was used exclusively on MiniDV and HDV formats.

@@12voltvids I still have a revue of the DTC-670, from 1993, where they say wonders about the sound and, at one point, the reviewer says that maybe the quality is due to Sony's new formulation tape, with ultra fine evaporated metal... Besides this wasn't a Sony exclusive, if my memory serves me, I believe it was TDK who first came out with the method... [Edit] Sorry, Matsushita, not TDK kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX7KkKiFltd6gpo

@@healthinfo1314 - DAT is - as its name suggests - a digital format. This is just how you can record on a magnetic tape a high resolution digital signal, while the tape speed can stay rather slow, in result you can have many hours of playtime on a rather small format at a high quality. There has been always a point in inventing more efficient formats.

Well, I cleaned everything in the DTC-59ES tape mechanism and put it all back together and it worked fine. But when I tried to adjust the alignment, the tape guides popped off. DOH!! It's currently in pieces again and I'm trying to see if I can fix it somehow. Meanwhile I discovered I could use the tape mechanism from my old broken down DTC-690 in the DTC-59ES that I bought. Same connectors, same wiring... It's working... (My DTC-690 has a short in the main circuit board and I had to trick it into play mode.) I can't believe the tape mechanisms are wired exactly the same... So when the tape guides popped off I also lost one of the springs. If you ever read this and can help with repairs please let me know. David.

Cool video. I have a PCM-R300 and the deck looks pretty similar. It will load tapes but my issues i have is the slider arms will immediately pull the tape up to the drum as if it was going to play the tape. It pauses and then the arms will slide right back down. This action will repeat about 3 times before it stops. If I press the play button(or any button) the screen will blank off and on then the issue with the slide arms going up and down with start over again. Average now and then it will play the tapes as normal.

great vid thanks. Do you know why the tape roller guide would fail to retract fully to the top position? (The pin that pulls the tape up after inserting). This happens on one side (left). I opened the device fully and when sliding the mechanism by hand, it keeps getting stuck at the top metal part, then clicks into the final place after a bit of time. Maybe the screw needs to be topped up with blue thread lock. The screw turns continuously, doesn't actually lock in place.

Put it back together and same problem. I watched loading tape again and saw the obvious. The right side load lever roller was stuck in the up position. Took it apart again and saw that lever gear was off the slider assem because the little nylon bushing had come off. Found it on the floor of the unit. Those bushings were split so need to find substitutes. I fused splits with low watt soldering iron and put back on, temporary. Now its working again, hopefully for a while.

I have got Sony PCM-2500 DAT recorder. Everything seems to work as it should. However, there is a problem with playing certain DAT tapes. It sounds like during normal playback the playback speed is increased (pitch up) by about 1.5. However, it does not show on all tapes. Sony Prodata Plus PDP-125 tapes don`t show this at all. The worst case is with TDK DA-R12 tapes. As Sony tapes work fine it makes me to believe that there is incompatibility of this recorder with certain tapes. Eventually it goes away on TDK tapes if to use AMS in both ways. Sony tapes, as I mentioned, work without any issues at all. Is it the issue with the recorder?

DAT was such a bad idea ... I used DAT for some of my college projects back in the mid 90s and sure, back then it was AMAZING ... but we all knew how fragile both the tapes and the players were even back then. So many players are selling for parts on eBay now. :(
@12voltvids

DAT was a commercial success for the recording industry. It was the defacto standard for digital mastering for over 20 years. Every radio and TV station also used the format. The consumer machines were crippled with SCMS but the professional machines had no such nonsense. Before the internet and sending files was a reality, a musician could lay down tracks at home on his dat recorder and mail a perfect 1:1 copy to a band mate anywhere in the world, where they could work on it, add their part, mail back their work, and then mix down without them actually being in the same country. Andy Summers did just that, on his Jazz release Green Chimneys. He mailed the session tracks to Sting, and he laid down the vocals, mailed the tape back for mixing. (That was in the CD liner notes that they did it with DAT BTW.) The tapes are actually not that fragile. I have been using DAT for many, many years. My tapes all go back to the mid 80's and have hundreds of passes on them and the vast majority have no errors. Some of my dat tapes have hundreds of passes. They actually put less wear on the tape than VCR because the tape is only a 90' wrap.

OK I stand corrected, even though still sitting. 😂 I have couple of DAT tapes that I have had since 1994 and I think I can find some folks that might have some hardware to play 'em. @@sarasartori6859 Serial Copy Management System (SCMS) is a copy protection scheme that was created in response to the digital audio tape (DAT) invention, in order to prevent DAT recorders from making second-generation or serial copies. SCMS sets a "copy" bit in all copies, which prevents anyone from making further copies of those first copies. It does not, however, limit the number of first-generation copies made from a master.

DAT machines sure are holding their value because it was the defacto studio production format for over 20 years and there are thousands of session recordings, demo recordings and mixed master and safety copies out there and as they no longer make new machines people with dat libraries are looking for backup machines. Same thing happens with beta VCRs. They go for a good price. A Bata is worth nothing to someone that has no tapes to play but if you have dozens of beta tapes of your family videos shot back in the 80s you need to transfer you too would pay 500 for a machine to do it because paying an archive service 20 a tape can get expensive if you have a bunch of tapes. I run an archive service and do tons of tapes for people in that situation who have small quantities of 8mm and beta tapes. For someone with many tapes acquiring a working machine is a better option and people with working machines for sale know this so that pushes the price way up.

Hi 12voltvids, Are you still working on dat machine repairs from people? If so, I have 2 dat machines I'd like to send to you for repair if possible. I have a Sony DTC-790 and PCM-R300 dat recorders that are displaying 'caution' when turned on and are non-operational as a result. The units may play for 4-6 second then stop, the take-up spindle turns very stiffly and then stops with the end result being tape spooling inside the transport mechanism. All the info I've seen on the internet points to dried-up grease on the take-up spindle. Any thoughts on this issue and how it can be resolved? If need be, I can ship out the transport mechanisms or the entire units depending on the shipping costs. A few years ago I was in Arizona and it was 114 and even though it was hot it didn't feel it because it was dry. You sweat and it evaporates quickly and you cool down. Our heat here is humid and even though you sweat it doesn't evaporate as fast and you just feel hot and sticky. Stepping into the AC in the house was very refreshing.

The wheater is controlled by god it is precisely as he wills it to be.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it is controlled by heating of water by the sun, which evaporates, and forms clouds. Carbon dioxide that man pumps into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels traps the heat from the sun, which heats the globe up more, which melts the ice caps, to produce more water which evaporates in this hotter air and forms even bigger clouds. Clouds cause the air density to change, and eventually the moisture is released as rain. Of course Man is not the only producer of CO2. Active volcano's spew tons of CO2 and H2S into the air, and cows produce plenty of Methane also a greenhouse gas which traps heat. Now we can't control the natural occurring greenhouse gases (volcano's) but we spew plenty ourselves into the air. So this global warming not only makes the planet hotter, but also creates nastier storms, and boy oh boy have they been getting worse over the past couple of years.
