He is hanging in there. Vet has decided chemo has best chance. Just another way to suck more money out if my wallet. At this point i don't know how many sessions he needs. But every time is it hundreds or dollars. A big thanks go to those that chipped in a couple bucks. It really has helped, and I and Loki are greatful for everyone's generosity. Between the donations and a couple months KZbin income i should be able to cover the bill. Hopefully it works and he lasts a few more years.

Well done dave, much better than it was :-D Tape guides have always been a pain to get just right. Making every tape work with one machine.

It isn't a pain once you get the proper tools and test tapes. Unless you deal with guides that have broken bases or can't be fixated on the mechanism. And: adjusting the tape path is one thing, but the proper DPG is equally important for compatibility.

I am the (Un) proud owner of a DTC-59es that I purchased brand new. It was in the Sony repair shop more times than I had the chance to actually use it, due to mechanical failures. I dropped it off at the Sony store's repair drop off depot under warranty, so it didn't cost me any shipping and they didn't charge me any return shipping via UPS. After the warranty expired this piece of "sheet" screwed up again and Its been sitting in it's box in back of my closet for years. I don't know if its worth even attempting to fix it now, but I may try. If there is ever a reason for buyer's remorse, buying this nice looking hunk of junk is a good reason.

Yes my feeling with this chassis it the same. The 690, 75es ect superrior. Same with tascam da40 rub forever other than the loading belt. I'm also not a fan of the Sony dat walkman's but the tascam and teac portables were bulletproof.

Have faith, Dave! it did take a fair bit of work with a hamster's gyneacologist to get the guide unstuck. I will get the plastic roller fabricated and if it's going to give any problems, will have replace it. Kudos.

It should be ok. The preamp has been recapped and it is putting out good signals. It played the tape all the way through no problem.

As i remember from 40 years of videos rep there is a little screw in the button of the guide to hold it in place, just a friendly hint from Denmark and me.

Dave could you possibly change the entry guide nylon to the exit guide nylon swap them over would that make any difference? Best regards

I don't know what difference that would make other than perhaps affect the tape as it passes the capstan and pinch roller. The envelope is good. It records and plays fine.

Congratulations on another good repair! I've had some success resurfacing rollers by mounting them on a drill press with a nut and bolt securing them then holding a strip of very fine sandpaper such as 1500 grit or finer to the piece and letting the machine do all the rotating work, think of it as a vertical lathe. I've also applied this technique to resurfacing soldering tips using a fine file, extending the tip's life considerably.

Its not as serious as I first thought as the waveform is actually great. There are no angle pins on this one, just a plastic roller. The tape is just set at the correct vertical position and the drum takes care of the rest. Unlike a VCR the tape is only read for 90' but the wrap is a little more than 90 so there is buffer room, as long as it in in the correct plane and not wandering up and down. The first tape is quite badly damaged from an encounter with a Panasonic with a bad pinch roller. I don't know what will happen if a long thin computer tape is used, because these transports didn't work well with those tapes anyway but on a normal thickness DAT tape it is playing fine.

Would it be an option to swap those two guides, so the good one is feeding the tape into the drum, and the bad one is only picking up the tape going back into the cassette?

Well it doesn't really matter because the exit alignment is just as critical as the entrance. Yes I good roller could improve things however if you look at the way form coming off the heads after I got everything set up it looks great. Yes the roller has some scratches on it but it's not critical and the tracking is fine. Will it last? I don't see why not. The most critical thing is the vertical positioning of the tape. One thing sure as hell is if I hadn't been able to get rid of that slack it was on the roller when it came out of the plastic bag it would have never in a million years been able to play that tape because the tape would be riding up and down constantly changing at least now the tape is exiting the guide at the correct height. It's the metal ridges that hold the tape at the correct position not so much the roller. Earlier designs actually had a metal pin that held the tape at a specific angle after it went around the roller. Take a look at the guide pins on VHS for example. The earlier DAT had angle post as well that were stationary. The scratches on the nylon roller may affect the tape slightly but there is a good itch between the roller and where it actually makes contact with the head or it could smooth out its travel

You work and fix things that I never would other than belt changes. I have had some cassette belt changes on Marantz cassette players that were a nightmare. You know your business really well and do great repairs.

@@12voltvids I didn't catch the scope I thought the roller was out of position on the arm and no adjustment so I thought adding some washers to raise the roller might help or correct the problem.
