You’re quite right. The orders data isn’t random because it was generated by people placing “real” orders. But the stock data was generated by myself and didn’t allow for the fact that products could sell out. It could easily be fixed by just increasing the amount of inventory in the appropriate table. At 10 minutes and 44 seconds, the diagram shows the inventory table primary key is not being used on recipe table (as there is no item ID in it). Should that have been connected to the Item table instead? And bypassed recipe table altogether. Or should recipe table have an Inventory ID? Let us know it you get a chance.

Hi Adam, thanks for the video. I have a question regarding the relationships you have established for the tables in QuickDBD. Looking at the diagram, it suggests that the cust_id in the orders table and the cust_id in the customers table have a one-to-many relationship, while I think it should be the other way around? Since one customer can appear several times in the orders table but should unique in the customers table. Same for the item_id field in orders and in items.

@@LearnBI Hi Adam, I have finished watching. I could think if two explanations, but not sure which is correct: 1. Have noticed at the end of part 1, there are some error messages regarding foreign key. This probably means the tables were created in Navicat with no relationships established and we would not need them for the purpose of this exercise? 2. In part 2, you used Left outer join to join the tables orders and item on the key item_id (one-to-many based on the QuickDBD diagram). I guess this could be the reason? Thank you for your reply. Your videos have helped me greatly getting into SQL.

You’re very welcome, I’m glad you find them helpful. I’m not a sql expert, I just use what I know to achieve what I need to. In this project we were able to do what we set out to by creating, populating and querying the tables as we set them up. The cardinality type didn’t really come into play and “joining” the tables when I set them up in dbd was simply to demonstrate the relational model and how tables related to one another. I’m sure most sql professionals would probably cringe when they watch this but that’s fine by me. If it works, it works 😎

No but you can export the database SQL from from quickdbd into SQL server. Then you’d just need to import the data into the database you create.

It will depend on the sql functionalities included with the BI tool you’re using. Most allow you to use custom queries to create data sources but you’ll need to write them before hand is they are complex and BI tools aren’t really made for that. Also, the sql queries I wrote in the project are to create data sources in the bi tool, not to get the data for individual visualizations (which might be actually what you’re referring to).

Hello Adam, great video! I am learning a lot about relational databases from your tutorial. I have a question about the relationship between `Ingredient.ing_weight` and `recipe.quantity`. As I understand it, `recipe.quantity` represents the weight of each ingredient in each item, and `Ingredient.ing_weight` represents unit weight as ingredient price. The way I calculate the cost of each ingredient of each item is as follows: (recipe.quantity/Ingredient_weight) * Ing_Price * SUM(orders.quantity). Am I understand it correctly?

I use Google Cloud for things like SQL instances and BigQuery. There’s not really such a thing as Google Cloud BI unless you’re talking about Looker Studio but that’s very easy to create an account for.

Hi Renato. Workbench is the only free one I've used but I've heard people talk about DBeaver - alternativeto.net/software/dbeaver/about/ Have you managed to solve your issue with the data imports? Remember that the .sql file you execute to build the tables also insert the data so you don't need to insert the csv data as well.

Thanks for your support. DB Browser is made for SQLite files. The project file is .sql and creates a MySQL database so you would need to be running an instance of MySQL and use a tool like MySQL Workbench.

Hi Adam. I downloaded your datasets from the link in the description and was a little confused with the "quantity" column in the recipe table. Can you explain what this column is supposed to represent? For example, PIZZ-MARG-R has an ingredient, Pizza dough ball (ING001), with a quantity of 250. Does this mean to make this pizza, we will need 250 pizza dough ball? EDIT: I guess its 250 grams of pizza dough needed to make a regular marg pizza.

Normally Ben would have an ordering system that collected data in a sql database. The Excel data wouldn’t exist. I’m just showing that data as an example of how it would be collected in the database.

Hi, is there any other open source tools that can recommend? Like set up MySQL in docker and workbench to set up schema. Because Navicat only provides 14 days of trial. Workbench will be ideal for most of people. However, importing csv to MySQL in workbench will encounter a lot of error which video hasn’t mentioned how to troubleshoot. If you’re having trouble importing csv data into with Workbench, try converting it to SQL statements using something like www.convertcsv.com/csv-to-sql.htm

When I add the foreign key, for example: ALTER TABLE `customers` ADD CONSTRAINT `fk_customers_cust_id` FOREIGN KEY(`cust_id`) REFERENCES `orders` (`cust_id`); I always get the error: Error Code: 1822. Failed to add the foreign key constraint. Missing index for constraint 'fk_customers_cust_id' in the referenced table 'orders'. I tried to set the key in the fact table as a UNIQUE KEY, however, it creates another problem when I load the excel into database. There are multiple duplicate entries that UNIQUE KEY does not like. Any solution?

Hi i'm a novice but I couldn't get the Quick DBD model to work on SSMS, I noticed that some of the one-to-many relations are drawn the wrong way round on the diagram. Once fixed it works fine :)

Been a while since these comments have been posted. But the alternative I found was creating these tables in SSMS using Database Diagrams. This provides you with a similar visual way of creating the tables. You can also create these tables, export them to MYSQL and then give the code provided to chat GPT and ask it to make it compatible to SSMS.

that's amazing but i didn't understand how do you split out the first data file to multiple tables because it will be complicated if we have thousand orders espacially when it comes to adding customer id...could you explain that?

In the real world, that first dataset shouldn't exist except maybe as an exercise to spec out the column and data you might need to collect. The idea was to build the backend database for collecting pizza orders. When an order is placed the data is automatically collected in the different tables without the need to split them up.

What type of MacBook are you using? Which laptop is good for data analysis?

I have a M1 MacBook Pro. I don't really have any recommendations for laptops but I would just say to find out what the minimum system requirements are for applications like Power BI, R and Python. Also remember that a lot of analysis in BI relies on cloud technologies so the computing power of your computer isn't used.

Hi Adam, I have a question. I am currently a construction worker "journeyman welder" unfortunately my body can't take being in this field anymore due severe low back bulging disk. When I was younger I was very in to computers however once i got older and started working i forgot about my interest in computers just due to constantlyhaving to work my butt off to...i want to change fields and get in to b.i data analysis field...but I will be starting from scratch...any advice on what I will need to start for example like i know ill need to buy a computer first and foremost but any other must have equipment before I jump in head first? If you’re wanting to work with BI tools like Power BI and Tableau where you might need to install software, you would need to check the minimum system requirements for a computer. Otherwise, if you start with Google Data Studio, you could use any computer with and internet connection. Other than that there’s not really any other equipment you’d need. You may want to invest in online courses teaching sql and data analytics.

Hi, executing the sql file will create a MySQL database so it would work in Workbench but not management studio.
