I might have done it myself once or twice, but I don't want to take too much credit. It's the matter of fact nod, the "yeah, sure, of course", when you ignore (or don't even realize) that the other side thinks what they're asking for is some special feat, but for you, based on the knowledge and skill that is ordinarily required from you, it's just another monday at work.
@MidnightSt3 жыл бұрын
@@joeschembrie9450 my headcannon is that the contraction thing is a hardcoded limitation intended to make it clear that he isn't biological (after all, Lore doesn't have that limitation, and the main reason why he was deactivated was that he was creeping people out by how humanlike he was). on the other hand, particle utterances (or whatever grammatical cathegory "uh-huh" falls into) would be a separate subroutine that would be included to make him more personable. the creator wanted him to be clearly recognizable as a computer, but a friendly neighborhood computer.
@Cryptic00133 жыл бұрын
@@MidnightSt That does make sense, especially since being capable of saying "Ahh" and "Oh" and other such informalities keeps him from seeming curt or brusque, while just saying "I see" or "Understood" would come across standoffish (which he certainly isn't). Probably for the same reason nobody seems to realize that the Warp Core shouldn't in fact be the most volatile thing on the ship*. Drama. *The warp core is where streams of matter and antimatter are fired at each other in pulses. More like an electron microscope meets a combustion chamber instead of a fission reactor waiting to melt down. How Geordi and others FAIL to 'shut it down' when it goes volatile is beyond comprehension. Just close the valves at the antimatter containment to squeeze off fuel flow and shut down the injectors.
@Rembanspellsong3 жыл бұрын
@@atigerclaw it doesn't usually fail where the matter and anti-matter are supposed to meet. it fails either where the antimatter is being stored in it's magnetic field to prevent contact with matter, or in the stream where it is being injected into the core to power it. in the star trek universe anti matter + matter = big explosion. the minute quantities actually being used in the warp core and directed by the dilithium crystals aren't a problem but if the injectors lock open or the magnetic stabilization field starts to collapse you have a BIG problem
@atigerclaw3 жыл бұрын
@@Rembanspellsong I'm aware, but writers don't seem to understand the engineering concept of the failsafe. It does not mean that something is too safe to fail. It means that the failure mode itself renders the threat inert. Hard with antimatter containment, I know. However, I can easily concept up a provision that goes: 'If containment is losing power, this solenoid loses power first, releasing a pin that causes a small explosive charge to fire, kicking the pod clear of the ship before the magnetic fields collapse.' And if the solenoid fails? Well, the solenoid actively holds the pin ready. So if it fails, the pin gets released and the charge fires. Fail, SAFE.
@anonygent3 жыл бұрын
Theoretically speaking, "security" is probably a very low priority on a spaceship that spends most of its time travelling or hanging out at safe planets and starbases. Only when the ship goes into new and/or dangerous territory would security even be necessary. And so if security is doing anything at all, they are probably guarding specific sites on the ship such as engineering and don't get called to the transporter rooms or shuttle bays that often. It happens in the show a lot for dramatic purposes, but it would likely be a pretty rare call.
@atigerclaw3 жыл бұрын
@@anonygent Do you guard a nuclear reactor by posting security guards on top of the control rods? Or do you guard a nuclear reactor by posting security AT THE GATE leading into the power plant? The shuttle bays and transporter rooms would literally be the first security checkpoints I fill in on a schedule/roster. They are the main points of entry for the ship and where I would expect any trouble to start outside of direct transporter beaming. Following that, the Ship's BRIGG would be my next priority. THEN I would fill in other security points as safety assessments demand. ALSO: Given the tendency for enemies to beam directly onto the bridge, I'd have a security room built onto the bridge module and staffed with posted guards as well.

Why are his legs spread in transport? I don't suppose he is lying that way in his pod..
@desktorp10 жыл бұрын
During a later event, Danar demonstrates that he is able to exist beyond the normal confines of the transporter's isolation beam.. perhaps because of his super speed, or maybe just because of some super-chi that allows him to control his own molecules enough to stop them from being converted to energy/information by the transporter beam. Beyond that however, people regularly move around, mid-transport. Also, in the episode 'Realm of Fear' we get a glimpse of what it looks like to transport; it shows that you can at least kinda see your point of destination before you fully materialize. en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Realm_of_Fear_%28episode%29

Snowwie88 People are often aware of being transported a moment before. Even though his standing position was just convenience for the shot, let's just say he reflexively took a "fighting stance" in that instant with his super speed.

Did anyone notice Picard's mistake? He told transporter room to beam anything from "inside that shuttle", when in fact he meant the escape pod, not the shuttle.
@rogerwilco27 жыл бұрын
I believe the escape pod was empty, so they probably did mean the shuttle.

Well, then Picard had a 50/50 chance it was the shuttle or the pod and he guessed the right one. Double bluff...
@8Rincewind6 жыл бұрын
To everyone trying to defend it, this is a work of fiction; most likely this was a mistake on scripting. Picard was focused on the Shuttle until Data pointed out the escape pod. The implication is clearly that the soldier was in the pod.

They tried the same formula Enterprise, it failed, the market place had changed, cbs and co either had to change the product or give up. Thing is kids today are alot smarter and far more mature than our generation was watching tng all those years ago, Tng would not have made a second season if it aired today. Discovery mean while is one of the most streamed programs on the planet despite many older fans having issue with it.

That's not really division of labor. Division of labor is having some people learn how to do security really well and other people learn how to work the transporter really well, instead of everyone being mediocre at everything. Anyway, everyone's right. The vast majority of transports are safe: things like transporting crew to and from the surface, transporting friendlies between ships, etc. And seeing as the transporter can hold people mid-transport and give security as much time as they need to get there, there's no point to keeping a squad in the transporter room twiddling their thumbs.

The security teams spend half their time in the transporter rooms. Why would you need any security at all when you can erect skin tight forcefields around people on the ship or isolate area's between bulkheads? Most of the show is to add interaction and stuff, most of it doesn't make sense. Why not just transport him straight to the brig?
@threenumbnuts6 жыл бұрын
There are at least 4 teams though, and they apparently operate separately. Why not station one of them at the transporter?

Fun fact: When you beam you die and a exact clone of you materialize on the other side. Fun fact: You are not only you, but you are also you.
@JB525205 жыл бұрын
The clone is the exact same pattern of matter and energy that gives rise to the consciousness and memories of the initial pattern. Its thoughts continue during transport (as seen on TNG; in TOS it didn't appear that way). This is less disruptive than getting vitrified (frozen but less damaging) and waking up in the future, a situation also depicted early in TNG. If you believe that transporters kill, it could also be argued that I died each time I had ECT. It was even more philosophically like death than getting vitrified because when I regained consciousness I was recovering from a seizure, and my brain had been changed slightly. I could feel the death crawl up my arm from the IV. It burned. When it got to my neck everything stopped in an abrupt discontinuation of consciousness. ... Pieces of my brain woke up before the others, terrified. Afterward, most of my memory was still intact, and I'll never know what I lost, but I'm still me, even after multiple procedures. Life goes on. Really the transporter is only a problem if you believe that souls rather than patterns of matter and energy give rise to consciousness. Take them out of the picture, and the rest is just semantics.
@thefirstprimariscatosicari68705 жыл бұрын
You are actually conscious during the beaming process, because transporters aren't replicators only used to clone people from one place to the other, but instead pick your atoms and "transport" from a A to B. It's similar to Stargate transporters.
@TwistedSoul20025 жыл бұрын
Not in the Star Trek universe. In our universe, yes- that’s how transporters would work (like replication), in their universe it’s physical transportation of the same atoms... Which actually makes that Will/Thomas Riker episode out of place- but I think there was some accident which caused that, otherwise they could just replicate 1000’s of Data’s and put them on every Starship/Starbase etc.
