Welcome to episode #40 of our Franchise Mode series with the Vancouver Canucks on NHL 24! Entering year #11 in Vancouver with a solidified forward and defense core, we have a few goalies who all want a shot at being our starter in both the short and long term. The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise that have been through decades of misfortune, mismanagement, and, really, just pure disappointment. With nothing to show but three Stanley Cup Final losses in their 50+ years in the NHL, the Canucks are on the brink of returning to an all-time low as they have only made the postseason twice in the last decade, have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, and are easily in one of the worst salary cap situations. With no where else to turn, Canucks ownership has made a call to GM Data and his team of Assistant GMs to do the impossible: fix the unfixable team.

Spoilers Hi Data, in one of my previous comments I spoke about my conflicted thoughts on Lekkerimaki. You were right to give him a chance to prove himself and look at him - the second in the team scoring, getting almost to 40 goals and even more so, his value is the best right here with us when he is on TOP9F potential for some reason, which probably gets his trade value down at least a little. And with his 88 OVR he can be our top 6 RW for another 4 years and then maybe for one more year in top 9. I hope his new contract will boost him to some nice playoffs performances. If there is some alarming decline in scoring, we can still move him. A new contract for Raty is also very good in 2034 economy even if he is down in 3rd line in the next couple of years. Having someone who serves well enough in both, 2nd and the 3rd line is really good for this kind of money. Though we hate how injury bug crippled our defense this season, on the other hand I like how Hronek's contract makes even more sense, not just giving him extra money as some kind of pension :D And I am sure he loves being part of team for another season, too. What I really liked is how some players improved in the second half of the season, especially Raty and Markstrom. It is definitely Raty on PP, not Sydor, but we tried it at least, which is alright. And yes, I would see Sydor as a candidate for moving somewhere else in the off-season. The biggest question now is the starting goalie against Ducks. Demko had 0.885% against them in the last game of the season and they scored 4 on him. As I can see we played Muller in the first game against Ducks and we won 4:3, then I saw another when we had Hunter Jones in goal and we lost 4:1 - that was in January, then Muller again in February and we lost 5:3. In other words, the only goalie who has won against Ducks is gone. There is not so much difference between our three goalies and I would love to see Hunter in the first game because he proved himself so many times in the past, his playoffs numbers are probably even better than Demko's and we should show him our trust. However, he lost more games than he won this season. If it was real life I would probably not go Demko, because he spent years in Kings crease and Ducks know him too well and he also lost the last game against them. And what speaks for Bykov is nobody knows him, but I would not trust such a young goalie in the playoffs. I say, Jones for a first game with Demko as backup and then we will react on what we see in those playoffs games. I would not mind if you decide yourself differently, because I am never sure about goalies in this game - no logic to be found. For example, in my FA I checked on the best 10 goalies in the league by numbers and guess what? Only three of them were over 83 OVR and only two of them had some X-factors. That's utter nonsense! I mean there still must be a few goalies like Brodeur, Hašek, Luongo, Fleury, Lundqvist and I am willing to sacrifice even two good top 6 guys in their prime + some drafts picks for such a goalie, but there are none and their value is so low I started thinking whether I ever draft goalies at all... But more to the point and I have got some info to get our players eager to win: 2032 - we lost to Ducks in the 2nd round in 7 games after leading 2:1 2033 - we won against Ducks in the 2nd round in 6 games And in 2026 we won in 6 after two crucial games won in OT and there is a time for our long time members of the team to tell the story about it. I am looking at you, our captain, Quinn Hughes and you, Elias, Filip, Aatu and Vasily. And guess who scored the series winning goals in our two winning series against Ducks...yes, it was you, Aatu, in 2026 and you, Elias in 2033. I would love to see the history repeating itself for all love of your fans and especially the kids from all over British Columbia. It is up to you, our veterans to take this team to the glory. We have a good core, good youngsters, too. Eat well, sleep well and get your bloody job done! Show me your passion! Go Nucks!

Hey Steven! Glad that you liked the extensions! All great points on Lekkerimaki and Raty. And yes, as much as the injuries bothered us I'm glad that Hronek got a good amount of playing time! We'll also keep an eye on Sydor as he'll likely be a question mark this offseason. Thanks for your thoughts on the goalies. You raise good points about all three of them but, as you say, there really is no logic to be found 😂 Your experience in your Franchise Mode with all of the top goalies being lower in overall is very common! That being said, we'll do our best to play the right goalie at the right time! Thanks for doing the research on that history!! I love it! Let's get the veterans full of passion and remember the struggles that they've overcome before! I appreciate your thoughts as always and look forward to seeing you for the postseason ahead! :)

Spoilers Few scattered thoughts: - RIP bealieau, I hope Boston treats him well - Never realized how good that 2030 draft was. Very impressive work from the scouting team - He didn’t have great regular season numbers like lindberg in San jose, but could bykov pull a filip lindberg and lead us to a cup as a sub 80 ovr? - Injury bug was ridiculous this episode - That muller/demko trade was hilarious, “not even in the right city” to “cheering in the streets” all for a 7th round pick lol - League wide goaltending is absolutely horrible, and defenseman contracts are brutal. Hopefully get that fixed by NHL35 but not optimistic lol - We need to find a way to beat the ducks, they’re terrible on paper but always find a way to get by us…maybe a new goalie like demko or bykov is the way? Jones’ track record against anaheim has been pretty bad in the playoffs in recent years if I remember correctly - Sign bykov before his ask goes up - My gut is saying Jones to start Demko to back up, but we should check how Jones has done against the Ducks in the past Have a great vacation Data and we’ll see you at disneyland for another Ducks playoff matchup.

Hey Gaben! Thanks for those scattered thoughts! I was especially intrigued by your goalie thoughts.. We don't need to say goodbye to Jones, but maybe we give Bykov a chance to pull off some voodoo against the Ducks who seem to have had Jones' number in recent years? It may truly be a three-headed effort in these playoffs as you could make a case for each of our three netminders. And yes, speaking of Bykov, we'll get him extended. ‼️ Spoiler ‼️ Rangers want to offload Mintyukov contract, which honestly doesn’t interest me a whole lot….but you know who did. Yakemchuk 👀 and on an expiring deal no less. If I recall correctly they wanted two unsigned prospects of ours; Carter and Scott. Can’t say I remember them honestly but I’d certainly love to see Yakemchuk lace up in a Canucks tarp. A point on the Raty extension. 😬 I was gonna suggest trading him out at the draft in his expiring contract. He underperformed the first half and at 31 regression may begin sooner. Now with his extension i don’t see it as realistic to trade him prior to next season. I want him to prove me wrong next year but perhaps he could be in a package that sees Yakemchuk’s arrival in Vancouver. But I’d think Yakemchuk comes over now or not for awhile. Who knows what he is asking NYR for so maybe letting him hit FA isn’t the best way to get him here. As for Müller, his ask is high, absolutely, I don’t disagree. But if we can sign Raty at 31 to a 3x$6.5 for half his usual production, we literally could’ve given Müller that deal (by reducing the length). [Looking back Raty had a decent year, definitely a better second half than first.] Müller is in his prime I believe, 25/26/27 area, so his ask seems to make sense with what he has done thus far. I’m thinking his ask is so high because maybe the game recognizes what his growth will be come September 2034. I guess we will see by then if Edmonton decides to sign him at that price and what, if any, growth he has. But to bring Dumpko home? *flashbacks begin* Anyone seen MightyJoe? His office has been dark for a week. I’m gonna call his direct line, maybe he fell asleep. I…I can hear the ringtone. He left his phone in there. *walks over to office*, *knocks* “Joe?” *tries handle* “Oh, it’s unlocked. Joe are you-“ *me in corner, hugging knees and rocking back and forth* “Hey buddy, you OK?” *nods head as rocking continues* “Ah its his return that’s scaring you huh?” *nods head sadly, rocking slowly ceases* “You want to go get some spaghetti?” *shakes head no* “Aww come on, it’ll make you feel better.” *shakes head no again* “Ahhh, I know what’ll cheer you up. Say, you wanna go hide Demko’s equipment? We’ll spread it all across the arena, and this will blow social media up. What do you say?” *smile forms on face, continues to grow until it looks diabolical*, *cracks knuckles* “Abso-freakin-lutely” All joking aside Demko really wasn’t awful in his 10/11 games but that last sim v. ANA. Yikes. I’d think we have to start with Jones-Bykov, and with Bykov’s numbers I think that gets him G1. … OF COURSE WE PLAY ANAHEIM. Demko benched for round 1 unless we are down 0-3 or something. Hey MJ! Thanks for your thoughts as always. I'm a couple of weeks removed now but, if I remember correctly, I took a look at Yakemchuk and his overall/contract didn't interest me. I forget if he's an OFD but, if so, then that'd also be a point against him with the make-up of our defensive core we have right now. We got a lit of offers throughout the season for Carter who was a mid-round MED Elite from a year or two ago with inflated value so I didn't want to cheese using him at the moment, either. Now, for Raty! I hear your concerns but I think they can be quelled by his production in the second half once put back on PP2. For Muller, in theory his ask isn't crazy if the game thinks that he'll be a starter in 2034 onward. But, in Franchise Mode, numbers like that are reserved for goalies who have shown themselves to sim somewhat consistently. To commit that kind of money to a guy who has continued to be a question mark for us didn't make sense in my mind and i think getting anything back for him now before he went to UFA was the move to make. Now will Demko actually start? That's the question. Either way, even as a 2 or a 3, I'd choose Demko over Muller despite both showing their fair share of struggles. And speaking of Demko, a big LOL on that storyline of you and his equipment! 😂 All that to say, yes, Bykov has definitely earned some respect.
