The Sylvania is no longer sold at Amazon, try this one:

The Sylvania toy record player gives you decent sound from your records at a nice price. It's very portable and works on batteries, making it easy to take camping or to a tailgate party. It plays cardboard and flexi-discs very well as you will see.

It's another knockoff of the 80's Audio-Technica Sound Burger that are collectable and popular with crate diggers. But that model had a high quality magnetic cartridge and better sound quality. It also sounded like yours was playing a little too fast, a common problem with all these cheap turntables.

You can tell by the cartridge if the player is crap or not. The crappy crosley like cartridges have got a little red thing arround the stylus and they look all the same. You can get 3 of these cartridges for 13€. (Im from Germany) I think about $11 or $12 I think.

For what a comment is worth. I have one of these. I bought it for my "not so, in good shape" records that still have life in them, just not for my good turntable. While I'm not a big fan of ceramic cartridge setups, this player is not bad at all. This IS NOT a Crosley,, it's 100 times better. It does use a stereo cart, and has a proper stereo preamp stage for it. As for the built in main amp, it is a single channel monoral output for the single speaker,, this means,, the headphone jack is not stereo. However,, if you know what you're doing, and you like to mess with things,, there is an easy tap off of the preamp, to execute to a stereo line out, to plug into a home stereo system, or powered speakers. I did this with mine, and it ended up sounding pretty good.

I have this same model for my well played and worn out records. Was sad it only outputs in mono despite having the stereo ceramic cartridge. Was it easy to do the modification to stereo output? I noticed it has no screws holding it together so may require literally prying it apart to open it up. Any suggestions?

Are there screws hiding under those rubber feet possibly? Would love to get inside mine to tinker! :-P

I’m not 100% certain, but mine only outputs 2-channel mono over TRS and USB. On the back of the cartridge, two of the pins are connected with one wire for a total of three wires entering the tonearm. I cannot tell if they’re joint ground or joint L/R+. I have noticed both channel waveforms are identical on recordings over USB. A couple extra points is that the USB also allows an alternative power source from the batteries, but 5v over USB still seems too low for reliable motor torque. I’ve found the speed adjustment screws finicky due to that. The more massive the record, the harder time the player has keeping speed. I agree on the “toy” nature of the player. It’s capable enough for trying out Goodwill finds, but is, in no way, a serious player, not even for digitization. I got mine on a lark, don’t regret it, but it’s not even my Z-deck.

That's a cute little player. Do you get the noise if you plug an audio cable into the headphones jack/audio out and run that to a line input on a PC? You could maybe attach a ground wire somewhere maybe audio ground and power ground. You could also use a digital voice recorder to record off the audio out. If you really want to get fancy you could put your own pre-amp in this and record off that. I love this channel, you find the coolest gadgets.

I would have to disagree that simply running on batteries qualifies a turntable as toy. The Sony PS-F9 is an example of this, as there is plenty of substance to go along with the style.

Thanks for the video. But as for the topic - 40$, hahaha, how about....NO! It would be nice novelty toy if it would retail for some 10-15$. Otherwise you can buy a decent entey level vinyl player for around 100-120$ these days, and those will definetly sound 10x better than this toy.

Quite obvious BUT if you were to own some rare format records like the hip pocket records shown here, this would be to go if you want to back them up. A regular turntable cannot get so close to the center of a disc before the stop/auto return mechanism triggers.

$40 for that thing? I wouldn't even have paid $20 for it unless for a specific reason such as what you used it for. The USB connection sounds loads better however, Woodstock didn't seem to do very well for ending world hunger if world hunger is still going on in 2018

Neil Forbes does it has any kids logo on it? No. Does it has He-Man, She-ra or Frozen logos on it? No, then it is not a toy. Yes, it runs on batteries. Let me ask you this: can you take the Crosbey or other record player with you with while you're camping or travelling? No. Why? Because you need an electrical outlet to plug it in.
