Pearson correlation [Simply explained]

What is a Pearson correlation? The Pearson correlation analyses the linear relationship between two variables. With the help of the Pearson correlation coefficient r which is between -1 and 1 we can determine:
How strong the correlation is
and in which direction the correlation goes.

This explanation is not very clear. Could nominal, ordinal scale use pearson correlation? As I know the mention scale cannot pearson but use Spearman Rank for ordinal....
