"Date Etiquette" is a Coronet Instructional film aimed at teenagers, about proper behavior on a date with the opposite sex. The plot follows four well-behaved and well-groomed high school students. The boys ask the girls on dates to various activities and they demonstrate good manners and what is expected from both a boy and a girl's perspective. This movie is a good example of what were referred to as "social guidance" films in the mid-century. These 16mm films were shown in schools in an attempt to encourage family values and to define gender roles. Evelyn M. Duvall collaborated, she was the head of the National Council on Family Relations.
A teenage boy stands awkwardly in front of lockers. He asks a girl named Alice if she would like to go to the school play with him (00:41). She agrees to the date. They arrange the details. Alice descends her staircase (1:33). Her parents read in the living room, she shows her mother how well-groomed and sharp she looks. The boy rings her doorbell, he is wearing a suit and bowtie (2:15). She introduces him to her parents. He paces nervously while she gets her coat. He engages the parents in conversation about the play, making a good impression. He puts the coat over her shoulders. He moves to walk on the curb side of the street (4:10). They follow an usher into the auditorium. He gets drinks from a table while she politely turns away as he pays for them (4:51). They speak to another couple and make introductions. They exit the play and make plans to go to a diner. They both study the menus and he suggest the hamburger deluxe (6:09). She checks the price of the burger deluxe and orders something of equivalent price. She tells him she will have the chicken salad. He orders for both of them (6:36). They have an awkward silence. She breaks it buy telling him she is having a nice time. They begin to chat and he inquiries about her charm bracelet (7:15). She shows it off and tells him she made it. He studies it and asks more questions. The waitress brings their food. They prepare to leave, he pulls out her chair and places her coat over her shoulders (8:09). He then leaves a tip on the table. They talk outside of her house. He walks away and they wave to each other (9:23). Two teenage boys enter a house, one runs up the stairs. The other flips open a notebook that has a phone number for “Kay” (9:48). He yells up the stairs that they should call her and invite her to the community center on a double date. The other boy comes down the stairs with a tennis racquet. He dials Kay on his rotary phone and invites her to see “Wagon Train” in the movie theatre. She has already seen it, but agrees to volunteer at the scavenger sale (11:00). Teenagers decorate the community center with crepe paper streamers and paper elephants (12:13). Kay dusts an antique lamp. He helps her put up a sign that says “Knick-Knacks.” She leaves to help with refreshments. He notices a list of activities on a bulletin board (14:27). He points to “Bike Trip To Rock Point.” He imagines him, Kay and another couple riding bicycles. He then imagines them grilling hotdogs over a fire at a weenie roast, they climb the bleachers at a baseball game, people swim laps in a pool, they square dance in a rec room, have a picnic outside on a table. He nods and smiles while imaging all of the possibilities for dates with Kay (15:31). The two boys in suits buy movie tickets and enter the theatre with the girls. Him and Kay sit down with bottles of Coca-Cola and talk about things they like to do (16:30). They decide to the weenie roast on a double date.
We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."

When she is showing him her charm bracelet she says "I make a lot of my own jewelry" but the captions for the hearing impaired said "I make a lot of my own children." which I found actually more impressive.

That Kay is a swell girl. And Nick, while a bit awkward, is an agreeable and considerate guy. It warmed this middle-aged woman's heart when Nick found out, to his surprised happiness, that Kay liked miniature golf and weenie roasts and scavenger sales as much as he did.

memories...nice to remember a time when dating was civilized...I grew up during this time...the govt didn't hesitate to tell young people the 'proper' way to act...not that it worked!...when I was out of high school it was the sixties...you know!...the bomb, hippies, Vietnam, demonstrations, 'free love'...all that. The 'proper' behavior here was pretty much abandoned.

Well, at least it was in the world of Coronet instructional films. They're really quite fascinating in the way they tend to show a very systematised world of social interaction. We mustn't mistake what these instructional videos portray as to what was actually common practice during the period.
@lilblackduc7312
@lilblackduc7312 Жыл бұрын
@@Deathmastertx For the sake of argument, let's say 'Coronet films' set a not-so idealistic standard, compared to what was actually common practice during the period. Now, decades later, where are the videos that set today's standard? Movies & music videos?!?! They're crude, vulgar, lacking any moral compass or modesty. Compared to what Coronet depicted, today's examples are essentially declaring, "Throw the meat on the grill & call out the dogs"!!! Today's "common practice" then, is so vile, it isn't worthy of mentioning here.

I think that's what I miss the most. The simplicity. Today in 2024 everything is so complicated. There were just things back then you could count on and were fixed. You didn't have to figure out or think twice about. Now everything is questioned and the complexity resulting from trying to accommodate everybody's freedom and "rights". It's not even male or female anymore but you have to include other combinations of the two. CONFUSING.

Oh, now I am feeling nostalgic and I wasn't even born in the 50's. You know what I miss? Good manners. Consideration. Chivalry. Men could be men and women could be ladies and nobody was saying stupid things like "gender is a construct" or " I can order my food! Open my door etc." or " call me by my chosen pronouns". People got way too much time on their hands, and parents who don't want to be bothered. The old days and old ways are the best, especially looking at the sad decay of our country now.

I was born in '71. I feel the same way about the depressing downfall in consideration and chivalry, and I miss the days before all this militant gender/social engineering took hold. I really enjoy these 50s and 40s social guidance films; so many of their messages (should) apply today.

This is way before my time, when there was a basic expectation of propriety between men and women. The whole point was to determine overall compatibility, and it seems far less "transactional." Of course, roles were very different, and I'm talking from a guy's perspective. When I was actively dating in the 90's and 00's, I noticed a lot of women had some kind of "victim" story about how horrible her ex treated her. How unhappy she was and all her life problems. LOL, not attractive on a first date! Then, if you didn't want to date them again, you became the next problem guy. These days, I can't imagine what younger guys go through.

Yet the data shows that the actual percentage of teen sexual activity has gone down significantly (from 48% to 40% from 2007 to 2017, for example, for the percentage of high schoolers who have ever had sex at all). Teen pregnancy is down. All the signs point towards todays kids being _more_ responsible, not less!!! The only thing that has gone down is the age at first intercourse. But that aligns with many other aspects of adolescence that are occurring faster, including physical development.
