I remember hearing that in early 00's, tv often would put these people in "character roles" to make the show seem more "crazy". You can tell they asked that blonde mum to act like that, as it doesnt seem to come naturally. They kinda centered the dates around the themes, as Kody spotted. Same goes for the main guy; they'd get him to do weird stuff to make him seem as "entertaining" as possible, then use the weird cuts. It was all about "weird-value", like an offshoot of what is now "shock-value".
