When I was just 21, I went out with a guy I met on OkCupid who was a few years older than me and lived in the same area as my parents (who I was visiting for the summer). We sat down to dinner at a nice restaurant and started getting to know each other, but the moment he said "I own my own home", I knew we were at two different places in our lives. He was a good dude though, paid for dinner and I'm pretty sure he went for a handshake at the end of the night. A few weeks later, I was picking up mail at my parent's PO box, and some significantly older guy was staring at me intensely. I thought he was mad I was leaving my dog in the car while I was picking up the mail or something. When I came back outside, he was still there, and started chatting me up. He asked if I was on OkCupid, and then said he had seen my profile recently and that we should go out sometime. That was when I knew it was time to delete my profile.

I moved from my home country of Puerto Rico to Austin as a single man hoping to find career work in animation or drawing or idk something You are living my life. Except you document it and make content out of it. You inspire me. I pointed out I switched to my creating account because I hope to find a discipline you have to upload content more frequently. I typically dislike using dating apps because of the pressure it adds to the situation of meeting a new person, (theres an immediate expectation of romantic interest as opposed to developing a relationship more naturally with someone you know) but I still try sometimes anyway since I'm not really going out and meeting new people otherwise. My latest experience was going out with this guy a couple times and having him be way too forward with me. The first date we went bowling and he kept going in for the hug every time I rolled my ball. He even did the typical "wheres my hug" thing after the date was over, he probably hugged me about 10 times throughout the date and it was very awkward. Even after this weird experience, I understand that first dates can be weird and I've been trying to push myself to at least try out second dates even if the first one wasn't perfect, so I ended up going on a second date with this guy. We started out by getting Mexican food at a food truck. While he was ordering our food, the woman working there asked him if he wanted any hot sauce, to which he responded with "No thanks, I think we'll be saving the spicy stuff for later" while giving me a seductive side eye. Beyond my own control, my entire face contorted into an intense grimace and I think I audibly wretched. It was so embarrassing, especially in front of the other lady. What made it worse was this was only the beginning of the date. We went for a walk in the park after that and I spent my time realizing we don't really share the same interests so it was over after that.

Depends if by natural relationship forming you mean, more of a slow pace but still, dating, or making an acquaintance with no romantic interest involved at all and later deciding if you want to start dating with that person Because dating apps, for most people, serve exactly the purpose of finding dates. Everybody have their own pace of developing relationships of course,, but those apps also provide most desirable convenience of knowing what the other person you've matched with wants and making your wants known Some apps are focused more on friendships. Or they let you choose to put a tag of "looking for friends" in your bio. And also just writing out that you are looking for more of a slow burn platonic friendship first is also always an option. It's best for both you and your matches to know that. Of course there will be people completely disregarding everything in your bio, but that just comes with dating in general. And men usually expect those casual matches to be fwbs, I imagine. In the end, dating apps are still just a tool. Used by a giant mass of people that sometimes form certain trends and customs of using them, sure. But with matches that are genuinely interested in you as a person, your experience will be as good as the cards you lay out on the table.

I prefer online dating rather than trying to ask someone out irl. Mainly because there's more chance of a shared intent to get to know someone on a site specifically for finding others as opposed to asking someone at a bar who may or may not already be dating or just isn't interested. If I could give simple online dating advice, it's this: -Be content with being single before you start looking. Desperation isn't attractive. -Never pay to use a dating app/site. They prey on desperation and try to rush you to pay. Find clever loopholes to get people on those sites to talk to you via email or other. -Know the difference between dating sites and hookup sites. -Do your research on which sites have the most activity and are more reliable. -Don't be afraid to talk to multiple people at the same time until you find someone you start to truly click with. This is a decent method of weeding out the ghosters without dedicating too much time or attention to them. But don't lead anyone on if you found someone already. -Take things slow. Best results come from the people who are willing to not rush and just form a friendship first. It's not friend-zoning if the shared intent to try dating later is still there. It's thanks to learning these the hard way that helped me get my gf whom I've been with for over 2 years now.

The only thing I've found that works is the ancient Greek concept of Xenia, which would involve the ritual exchange of gifts back-and-forth to create and strengthen friendships/alliances. So if New Acquaintance happens to mention in passing that they are moving, I'll be like "I've got a pickup truck if you need some help." It's a pretty aggressive move and they'll usually be like "oh nah thanks though". But then the day before the move when they realize how deeply fucked they are, they might text you and be like "hey actually could you come by for an hour or two to help with the couches?" And of course you wind up spending like 4-6 hours sweating your dick off. But at the end of it, you have one of two outcomes: A. New Acquaintance is now upgraded to Friendship Prospect. B. New Acquaintance is a sociopath. How do you test? Well, now you ask for a (smaller) favor in return. Make it something easy, but not trivial. Ask them to watch your dog for the night or pick you up at the airport. If they make BS excuses or flake on you, they are a Sociopath. Your wager of several hours of labor didn't pay off. Cut your losses and forget them. If they agree and come through on the favor, you now have a AAA Friendship Prospect that you can easily upgrade to Friend just by inviting them to activities. This process legitimately works. And is basically how strangers from different tribes became friends/allies for a lot of human civilization.

Fun fact that nobody asked for: I made a Tinder account once and filled the profile with photos taken from unflattering angles, with very ugly expressions and silly hairstyles (think 3 ponytails in random spots). It got reported, reviewed by Tinder mods, and then unfrozen because it didn't actually break any TOS. So now you now, folks! Being ugly isn't a bannable offense on Tinder! (And you might be wondering: Well maybe you got reported for being MEAN on DMS! But the meanest thing I did was ask a guy if he didn't get spaggetti tangled in his tongue piercing when he ate them. As an opener. He never replied back...)
