I realized this morning that the saga doesn't end here and there was in fact a tv musical remake of this in the 50s...like this comment if you want to see me suffer through that.

at least in the musical version it will make sense when they sing to each other? i’m gonna be annoyed if they don’t include the song from this movie! (edit: googled it and realized for some reason they just put in. like only 3 of the songs from the musical in this version for some reason. bizarre!)

There are a couple of things about this movie that makes it better than the previous version is that a least this movie knows that Eddie and Gloria aren't good for each other and they don't try to force them together. This also has better acting (particularly from Ava Gardner as Venus) and Venus isn't murder crazy. Also in Eddies defense she was a statue when he kissed the first time and the last thing a person would expect is it to turn alive in a matter of seconds. But it is unsanitary. Otherwise a vast improvement by far.

Its interesting how often the story of pygmalion has gotten "modern" retellings but not many are discussed, at least as such. There are two even more recent ones (though still a couple decades old) that come to mind and are a lot better done. The first is in the animated Hercules story. It can be a bit clunky at points and Herc acts uncharacteristically assholish as he occasionally foes for the convenience of the lesson. It is a good one where Aphrodity basically allows Herc to grant himself a genie wish to have his concept of a perfect date for the upcomming dance so he can learn that love is a little more complicated than just the one persons point of view. Things go to pot with Herc wanting her interested in him but not really knowing what else to grant her personality so..yeah..quickly he learns why people in a relationship should be actual 3 dimentional people woth their own wants and needs. He does grant her a full human perosnality in the end where she immediatly dumps him and questions how their art teacher Mr. Pygmalion manages his marriage with a statue so well. The joke twist comes when the teacher reveals that the insane jelously and homocidal confusion very much exist in his wife but for some people thats a worthwhile trade for having a supermodel obsessed with them. Lol The other one is the King of the hill episode called Pigmalion. Pletny talk about it for the ending and dump creepy pasta banned scene BS. What many dont tlak about is how it is a modern and very REAL interpretation of the old myth. Its honestly very clever by having this rich but mentlaly ill jerk essentially ttying to groom Luan into his perfect vision of a woman. Many men and women both go through relationships like this where they face their partner trying to mold them into their idealized version over what they started with. Its still such a common and toxic thing in relationhsips and often power over the other, ve it money or enotional manipualtion, makes it a very victimizing. The core identity of someone being forced into something else to be their romantic statue really cab objectify that perosn to the point they feel codependency in the worst possible way. They stop being them and start being their other's partner by design. King of the Hill made that connection and did a great job in adressing it, as heavy as it is. The sad truth is that they still had to keep things exagerated and such but most often, rhese modern version of pygmalion happen all time to people who arnt so insnae they want to recreate a mascot family with then as a livstock animal..often its just an a one sided romance whete one person is not appreciated for who they really are and pressured to be a piece of clay for the other to shape for their selfish goals.

I love Eve Arden (the actress who plays Molly), I feel she should be more of a gay icon! :) She was in Mildred Pierce and in Grease! Also, is it me or did they have beautiful lamps in the 1940s? :) (Maybe the only upside of being alive in that decade.)

I often feel slight frustration when it seems like modern movies and shows are trying to tiptoe around gender and sex. Trying not to offend anyone, thinking a bit too hard about everything. And then I see something from this time period. In the balance, I would take a "world gone mad with political correctness" over whatever passed for normal back then.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff3 жыл бұрын
We can certainly do better when it comes to representation when it comes to gender (which is a whole conversation on its own) but we have come a long way and it's good to know that we have made progress.

I really don’t get this review. 1948 One Touch of Venus is actually a very cute movie. Zero comparison to the fiasco Goddess of Love in the 80’s. Is the worst review I’ve seen on a cute and classic movie with big stars like Ava Gardner, Robert Walker and Eve Arden. You need to realize this is base on a Broadway Musical, and is the beginning of the 1950’s musical trend. No comparison to Goddess of Love.
@AveryTalksAboutStuff3 жыл бұрын
I actually did enjoy this much more than goddess of love as the cast is super talented. Goddess of love being a remake of this movie that I covered previously so I had to bring it up for that reason. This movie, though very old timey is rather charming I must admit.
