Culture Shocks From Living in Mexico? (CDMX)

I've dated a Mexican woman for 2 years, what my biggest culture shock was, was that Mexicans work a lot, she works like, 6 days a week, 12 hours a day, here in the Netherlands it's like, 4 days, and 8 hours a day, for most people, anyway, it was the best time of my life, an experience that I will never forget, and also, I hope to one day, end up in Mexico, and just go party with her and a couple of her friends, because that's something the Dutch, and the Mexicans have in common, they LOVE to party, I also love Mexican food, spicy food in general is amazing, but Mexican food is my absolute favourite, music wise I also love Mexico, Mariachi has become one of my favourite music genres to listen to Karla, I am forever greatful that we crosses paths, you mean so so much to me, I will always love you and support you for who you are, and what you desire in life

Unfortunately that is because Mexican work ethics and laws don't take the wellbeing of workers into their consideration, add that the old generations thinks that is how things should be and trying ask for better conditions will brand you as lazy or troublemaker. Just look into how long is taking for a new law to reduce our weekly working hours from 48 to 40 hours to being officially launched, and even then some workers aren't optimistic because they know some assholes bosses will ignore it or try to circumvent even if is the law.

But of course you can live well off when you have US, Euros and other first world country money that is more when you convert it to pesos. They never go in the dirt poor area and see how hellish the locals live. Definitely was misled cheap before I went. I used hostels which actually not so cheap anymore as no ventilation literally. As an asthmatic it was hard and a great experience. Wish gad been there say 25 years ago. I took intercity buses and were costly tbh. I loved the experience and needed to use my Spanish a lot ...I was shocked as to how ordinary workers survive as welfare state where is it inc water not drinkable so how can people buy water for whole family or medications??

I'm Mexican, I was talking to another Mexican girl and a Colombian girl on a flight from Peru to Argentina, they both lived in the Mexican girl in Switzerland and the Colombian in Sweden. We laughed the whole way as they would comment on their experiences and culture shocks. the funniest one is the Mexican girl, was invited after almost a year of dating her Swiss boyfriend to have dinner at his families home. It was very cordial and pleasant, however at one point her boyfriends Dad just showed up in pajamas and laid down to sleep in the couch and saying "It's very late, I am very tired, I need to work tomorrow early, there is so much noise etc" an obvious invitation for her to go. I am not sure if this is common I am almost certain it is not, we just laughed so much.

but only if it is real discrimination. if shop owner make the experience that not Germany, Swedes, Japanese and Indians cause problems but always the same ethnics then they are of COURSE more cautions due to this experience about those than about others. And i HATE if people then act stupid and ignorant and try to sell that as discrimination. One of the girls said Mexicans work a lot and only get 1 week vacation after a full year of work. Well it sounds like USA it’s the same here the only different is you get 1 week vacation and when you want to take it the company don’t wanna give it to you. Not counting that you work for dark to dark and don’t get to the the sun and you can’t get sick because you get fired and work Sundays and Saturdays long hours and get extended when there is a holiday. Instead of being close for Holidays you are open later. So you go home and to work that is it. Your paychecks go straight to bills and you don’t have a life because of the economy. At least Mexico is more free in that aspect. There is so many things to do in Mexico that’s does not require lots of money. And pollution is everywhere in the world.

It's more classism than racism. A good example are the Argentinian waiters in Mexico City, they can be white, even blonde, but Mexicans will discriminate against them for being poor, while brown nosing a Black or Brown person at the same time

I'm glad they speak on Mexico's positives and negatives. Mexico is a great country and many things going for it. Mexico city though isnt representative of Mexico the country thats like saying New York is America lol. For example he was saying something about Northern Mexicans can be racist/think they are superior to southern Mexicans. Well Mexicans have culture shock with other Mexicans as well. Northern Mexicans are much more direct and have a more stern speech that to a southerner could come off as rude, but they arent t being rude its just they take it the wrong way because they arent familiar with Northern Mexican states lol. SO that could be a reason why they have this perception of Northerners thinking they are "superior" to southerners and the fact that yes many are whiter in general which probably adds to the perception.

Everything you say in your comment, well us gringos up North in the cities being invaded by people from your country and other places more south , we can say the same about you. So re-read what you wrote and realize we up North in the US and Canada are dealing with the exact same thing, the same situation. Also as a famous obnoxious president once said about immigration, they are not always sending to the U.S. their best people. Well the same could be said for our people who are choosing to live in Mexico : They are not always our best so don't expect all will be perfect. People from the US go south with an american job intact and don't contribute to the economy. Mexicans expect to have to learn English in the US. Many people from the US don't expect to have to learn Spanish and expect you to speak English.

There are lots of social issues to be solved here in Mexico: the disdain that wealthy caucasian Mexicans exert to the middle and lower classes, the inmense corruption of politicians, the tardiness of people... But the bright side is immense: very hard-working people, the love for family, friends, and parties; the vast variety of cultures within (gastronomy, craftmanship, folklore, religious festivities); we Mexicans greet foreigners with hospitality!...

People from Jalisco do not think they are Spanish, we know we have a lot of Spanish ancestry there is a difference. I do agree that Mexican in the North are a light skinned that isn't a lie. We can't help the way we look but attitude with air of superiority I agree is not ok period. All kinds of people in Mexico city live in there so I don't like to share that kind of attitude that Northers think they are better from Mexico city. That is a point of view that is very skewed. I actually feel people from Mexico especially the richer families are really full of themselves because of the way they have an air of superiority.

@@ChicagoMillingCo. No its not that. Northern Mexicans are different culturally we are more direct and we are louder/stern in speech. Many southern Mexicans find us rude and bossy but thats just Northern Mexican culture. We don't baby talk like they do in CDMX, we are straight to the point. There can be a bit of a culture shock between North and South which is why there is a bit of rivalry and misunderstandings and false perceptions of each other. For example they talk much softer and quieter and if a Northern Mexican says can you please speak up I cant hear you they will take offense. Also we are not as laid back as the south.

No solo con otros mexicanos ,se discute , sino con argentinos , españoles , cubanos que sienten mejores que los mexicanos(sin generalizar) y los colombianos , todos de sangre caliente muy racistas ,no pudieron con mis compañeros y yo .( Sin ser fanfarrón) , porque me gusta entender sus idiosincrasias, y llevarme igual con ambos, no me gustan las peleas , pero si la gente es prepotente , ni modo. Además los norteños me decían que si me gustaba ""burlarme " de los tabasqueños , ¡no hombre! , me burlo de la situación , puro macho y a la mera hora , es puro grito y nada, es mejor así , al contrario de lo que parece ; los tabasqueños son muy directos , hablan recio y dicen groserías hasta la m.

I actually don’t find Mexicans to be friendly. I think its like everywhere else, some people are friendly are some people are rude. I kind of find some of them to be kind of rude. They may be nicer to foreigners.

I agree. It depends very much on where you are. Like anywhere, some people are friendly, and some people aren't. I also find that the friendliness is not always honest. I love Mexico and many things about it. It has been my home for many years. The global statement that "Mexicans are friendly" seems a bit naive and off to me, especially when the people saying it can't even speak Spanish. The 'behind-the-scenes' can be very different. Many Mexican people I have been close to bemoan how dishonest and unhelpful their compatriots are. People are people everywhere. There are a lot of nice, kind, decent people, and there are also rotten people. That doesn't change by name of country.

I’ve been living almost six years now in Guadalajara. I’ve yet to see any of these Vox Pops in the street. Perhaps they only interview people in Mexico City? 🤔 For me, I was expecting Mexico to be a larger version of Spain. Instead I found a smaller version of the USA. It looks and feels much more North American than European.

From what I've seen, Chileans and Uruguayans definitely put their noses to the grindstone more than their southern European counterparts. It's a whole different story - they are way more relaxed. Ultimately, saying all of Latin America operates like Mexico alone? Nah, that doesn't quite capture the full picture. I had Chicano friends who did a lot of these things too. One would always make plans then just not show up, and she wouldn't even text me, then when I would see her, she would just act like nothing happened. And my other Chicano friend would always offer to invite me to a soccer or football match or to his house for enchiladas, then never mention it again. And yeah, as someone who was raised to be a very punctual and reliable person, the whole "manana" concept is something I'd like to see done away with.

Absolutely not. It's our culture, you're just not understanding. Amongst ourselves we have no issues knowing when an invitation has actually been programmed or not. Typically people who say these things to you are making an open invitation and you can from your end let them know if you'd like to follow through. Also, we know how to be punctual, we just separate serious formalities from things that are more personal. For example a Mexican would never show up late to the office as that's a strict obligation. A party on the other hand we are free to relax from the strictness of corporate culture.

Next time a Chicano or Mexican person invites you to something, unless they give you a time and date, just know that it's an open invitation and the ball is on your court now to confirm whether you'd like to follow through or not.

Hey! I want to clarify something. grasshoppers are not a normal food. Some indigenous ethnic groups from places like Oaxaca ate it, Oaxacan vendors took it to CDMX and sold it as something from our roots, but 99.9% of the country does not eat those things on a regular basis and they are part of our purchases in the market. It's a tourist trap.

10:51 when he says North of Mexico he means the Northeast. Every time people talk about Northern Mexico it’s usually from Chihuahua to the east. Baja California and Baja California Sur are their own thing with their own problems but I feel that the racism and classism didn’t hit me as hard as other places in Mexico. Especially the classism which is strong in Mexico City.

I live in Texas and I nkow the issue about punctuality. However it is the same inacuracy about the US speed limit...every time you see SPEED LIMIT 70MPH WHAT THEY MEAN IS AT LEAST 80 0R 85MPH So une culture is non punctual the other is not litteral about speed limit, it is like the unwritten rule is to go 10 0r 15 miles over to be OK.

The punctuality thing has got to be a uniquely Chilango thing (people from the capital) because in the rest of Mexico you're ass better be on time! Especially over here in Jalisco, if you're late, we will start without you, ditch you, or fire you. Same as with calling everyone a "wey!" You call a Tapatio a wey, you're asking to get your teeth knocked out. Also, here in Jalisco we prefer getting to the point and we are not as "polite" as Chilangos who can exasperate us with how much time and breath is wasted in pedantic formalities.

I lived in Mexico for almost two years, and the biggest problem I had as an American was that Mexicans are never on time. As a native New Yorker, you learn really quickly that New Yorkers are not going to be pleased when you arrive late, especially without calling or texting. No one cares in Mexico about being late. I never got used to it and saw it as a huge disrespect of my time at times. Another thing was not being direct. Mexicans love to talk in circles (rodeos). When I was teaching English, many male students hated that I was very direct with them. They were used to getting their way at home and in the streets. But that was not going to happen in my classroom. Older males over 30 had less of a problem with my directness. I believe this was because many of them were trying adapt to the American way before beginning jobs in the US. Female students were used to being around men who took charge. Thus they accepted my directness, especially after I explained why directness was important in American culture. Over all, Mexican women are warm, sexy and friendly. Some wanted to really get to know me so that I could bring them to the US in the future, but most did not act that way. My Mexican girlfriends were great. The only problem I saw was that they did not know how to make decisions for themselves. If I asked someone out to dinner, they would need their dad's permission to go out at night. And these women were already in their 20s to almost 30 in two instances. Mexican guys liked having me around in social settings at the beginning when my Spanish just okay. The second I became completely fluent with a great Mexican accent (according to Mexican women), the men seemed to get jealous because I no longer needed them to help translate for me. I could now talk to everyone even girls the men liked. In conclusion, I loved it in Mexico. As with any other place on the planet, Mexico has its good aspects and bad ones. The people are very nice and their culture is welcoming. Once you know Spanish, everything gets much easier. Learning about the Mexican idea of time and getting things done in a timely manner are the biggest pitfalls of living there. If you can learn to deal with those negatives, Mexico will become a joy for you.

Punctuality in Mexico occurs in the work place and at school. Outside, for social gathering sadly Mexicans don't feel punctuality applies. Because they relate punctuality to obligatory chores and or duties. Meeting a friend is not a duty therefore....well you know
