I think asians are good at studying not cause they started at an early age or study beside from school, its just bc the levels of pressure and stress to which society subjects the student community. A student studies on average 13 hours a day, counting the hours both in school and outside of it. There is a culture of too great competitiveness in the classrooms, i mean each student wants (or is rather required in their homes) to be number one in everything, which is very difficult to achieve considering that the competition is too great since everyone is looking for the same thing.

I agree with this, in China you are pressured to have good grades and always be a good student because the schools are very strict and many test results are displayed for not just the teachers but the students to see so it's either you work hard and get good grades or you don't try, get humiliated by the teachers and students and probably the worst bit is going home and showing your parents..

Well, im Asian myself, but the studying aspect actually fits in to the “stereotype” that they talk about right after. Physically, Asians are smaller on average than westerners. So when it comes to actually physical labor, we would lose out (which ties into war). That’s why our parents and grandparents emphasize on studying because that is one of a few traits, aspects, that we could compete or do better compared to our non-Asian counterpart.

About the shy thing…we must understand a very important thing: Most Asian countries are rised under confusianism and gregarism principles, that somehow make them more “silent” , they take their time to listen to you, rather than talking first and right ahead. Also they have very interiorized do not disturbing or do anything that could create a conflict with other beings. And so on. So sometimes it might not be about shyness itself, but other principles that make them be a little more cautious and caring for the whole group than for the single person.

An interesting point about the education when it comes to Europe vs Asia as I’ve experienced in my own life as a half Filipino and half Finnish person, is that societal structures matter. I’ve lived and studied in Finland my entire life. We are often at the top in academics along side Korea and Japan, for example. But usually most students here are quite laid back and study kinda “here and there” and not 13h a day everyday. I think it’s mostly rooted in culture and societal pressures and structures. In Asia, especially countries regarded as 3rd world countries such as the Philippines, I can see why it’s very important to succeed in academics because it might ensure a better and hence easier future. But in Finland, because the government takes care of the citizens in need it isn’t as “live-or-die” here to get to the top when it comes to education. At least that’s how I’ve seen things.

I think being humble and ‘shy’ is culturally appreciated so a lot of people act shy even when they are internally confident just so they don’t get hate from people around them. Even celebrities have to act humble when they are praised of beauty otherwise they’ll be hated so much.

As a Chinese I can say Niki's high height is probably from some certain northern area in China, in fact people especially from Shandong, Beijing etc. could be very tall. If you are in a southern university and there is a girl student from those northern provinces, you may find that she could be taller than many men in the university, looks like a European.

I can prove that. I'm from eastern Shandong, studied in Beijing for 4 yrs, and now working in western Shandong. Personally I'm 186cm(6'1), while many friends of mine are even taller🧐 cuz most Northerners in China have breads, buns or noodles as staples, instead of rice, which contain more calories

Seems like you Chinese from the northern provinces have us white Americans beat when it comes to tall height in my experience as well as a white American man. 6'0" or taller men and 5'7" or taller women look alot more common with northern Chinese then with white Americans. Alot of tall Europeans from the Netherlands, the Scandinavian countries and the Slavic countries but with most other European countries with their ethnicities us Europeans and European Americans really aren't that tall on average and shorter on average then the northern Chinese. Northern Chinese people will feel tall in most of Europe and in North America compared to white Americans and most other Americans as well.

We have a guy at work who is from Shandong Province and he is tall (185cm). I have two nephews who have Chinese wives ( they met in China) and both of those women are tall and are from the North. When I worked in China it was fairly obvious that the Cantonese speakers were generally shorter than those from the North. i think that it may a fair generalisation is that Chinese who eat rice are shorter than those who eat noodles.

For Britain and some european countries, southeast and east asians are Orientals and Indians are Asians. Reality is that its a continental identity. It doesn't have anything to do with race. Infact, the some of the original natives of the USA also have mongoloid features but they are just called as Natives and not Asians.

As an Asian person, Filipino in particular, I definitely think Asians are good at studying but not due to starting education earlier than Westerners. It's definitely societal pressure. Even if you're from a richer Asian country, you still get that pressure from your family. For me however, I'm not good at studying as my parents didn't pressure me as much and I just got out of the pandemic in the Philippines where we've been studying at home for 2 years. My parents just want me to do the bare minimum and be responsible so that's proof of how societal pressure can affect your habits. I study in the Netherlands and so far my grades are VERY average, nothing special. A lot of my Indian classmates are studious but I don't know if it's due to the expectations of their parents. I wish I can do better but half of me can't get itself to do more things but knowing I'm surviving AND especially learning some things is what matters the most to me. I don't want grades to affect me as I stopped caring about them for the most part during the pandemic. Getting a high grade would definitely make me feel great though, my grades in Dutch and German (I'm a beginner at both) are higher compared to my other grades but I'm pretty happy with that already. It's like a little boost of joy. I'm at school right now and our first period got canceled so I'm just here watching videos LOL

On the shyness stereotype, I think it is because of the social norms common in a lot of Asian countries where like in Japan people might be less touchy feely and might look down on public displays of affection like hugging between members of the opposite sex. Also, in the U.S. we tend to call even sometimes strangers by their first name, while in Japan, even friends might call each other by their last name.

6:35 this made me think about that stereotype. Here in Spain there is a stereotype that we are extroverted, loud and very social. In Spanish society, it's true that being an extrovert is well regarded and being an introvert is "frowned upon". (not exactly frowned upon, but I get treated worse for being an introvert than an extrovert and I get made fun of for it a lot, and i even can socialize easily) I always thought that why do others think all Asians are shy when a lot of them aren't. Asians when they don't feel comfortable with their English/another language, they tend to speak less. But with Spanish people it doesn't happen. Even though they don't know how to speak any English, they still try to communicate and at the same time make people laugh. It doesn't matter if our level of English is very basic, we're going to keep talking a lot anyway hahahaha

About the studying, me personally I think about how my parents would view me. I’m a full Filipino who lives in the USA and the education here is a bit slower than how my parents have gone through. This was lovely; I agree stereotypes depends on cases; but I also think they’re base by base. Historically, asians work extra efforts to get where they are, and hard-earned skills get inherited/developed/advanced through time with continued attitude/culture. In many areas of the U.S., people are actively assimilating many aspects of Asian cultures, especially the cuisines and visual arts, gaming, popular music, etc. Even Asian literature is becoming more widespread in the U.S. In the county where I live, there is a large Korean-American community, so we are lucky to have multiple Korean restaurants (I'm talking upwards of 20 of them), Korean bakeries, etc. That has generated a critical mass to attract Chinese hot-pot, Vietnamese pho shops, Japanese ramen, etc. And that's on top of the mass media, k-pop, anime and gaming culture that is massively present, especially for young people in the U.S.

I’m Latino but I really love asians people and their culture. I always felt and always told myself I would love to be part of Asian culture. It’s just to beautiful and also how education is primordial. Asian people inspire me a lot to be better of myself tbh. As a Vietnamese-American, my two cents (and how I compare): Asians are good at studying- disagree. Although it might appear that most Asians are good at studying, a better statement would be that most Asian cultures ingrain the conscientiousness in academics (as most of the participants reiterated). However, the results reflect differently and not all Asians receive stellar grades or demonstrate academic excellence like people anticipate. So it certainly depends. In other countries, there's a fair share of students who perform well academically and others who are not so much so. Asians are no exception and it'd be unfair to generalize everyone that way. (Although for me, I kinda reinforce that stereotype as a top honors student since high school.) Asians are small- agree (half). Statistically, the body frames for Asians tend to be smaller than other countries, but with improvements in nutrition, that balance is slowly equalizing. The tallest Asian country (as a whole) is South Korea, with an average height of 172.5 cm for men and 159.6 cm for women (encompassing all adult age groups; the highest average is 174.9 cm for men in their 30s and 161.9 for women in their 30s). Yet, compared to other Western hemisphere countries, South Korea is shorter, but not significantly so. The weights and body measurements tend to be a little smaller, although like everything, there are exceptions, even among Asians. There are big or tall Asians too. In fact, some of the tallest basketball and volleyball players come from China. (As for me, I kinda buck that trend as I'm 171-2 cm and have pretty developed treasures. Although my bone structure tends to be smaller so even though I'm above average in height, I give a more petite impression. Where I would be considered a little below average in size in Western standards, I would be pretty above average in Asian standards. I tend to order a size Large in Asia, and even sometimes, the largest size doesn't fit me. 😕) There is still racism against Asians in the world- agree. It's a sad fact, but when you see other Asians get attacked for being "responsible" for the pandemic, what does that say? Also, the racism against Asians has been historical, from the U.S. passing a Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 or even today, when many Asians are passed over in employment opportunities. And let's not forget the fetishization of Asian women, which has its origins in gendered and racist notions on Asian women's submission and servility. Asians are shy- disagree. Likewise, it's a cultural basis. Some are not predisposed to gregarious behavior but nor is that any indication that Asians are shy. Like some of the participants reiterated, language barrier contributes a lot to that impression, though if another person were to be quieter upon entering a country whose language they don't understand, they don't receive the same judgment of being shy. Try seeing Asians interact in their native languages and you'll notice that even among them, there are people who are more outgoing among the lot. Asian cultures are not as famous as the U.S.- agree. K-pop is gaining global renown, but just the impressions of other Asian countries' traditional cultures are not, unfortunately 🙁 Though the Hallyu wave has made more people around the world more interested in Korean traditional culture and history, that isn't always the case for Asian countries. Even I'm from Vietnam and the impressions I get when people think about Vietnam is 1. Phở 2. Vietnam War 3. Áo dài. We Vietnamese certainly take pride in our cuisine and clothing, but I don't think we should be reduced to only those. Our culture is much more diverse and complex than many people would think. A lot of what is diverse, complex, and beautiful about Asian cultures gets undermined by simplistic impressions that arise out of ignorance, frankly. Even many people around the world have a hard time distinguishing East Asian traditional clothing- like when some respondents to an interview thought the interviewers were from Japan and China even though they were wearing hanbok.

Agreed as a Korean living in America. Asians have smaller width - this relates to the chest and hip size. Arms and legs are shorter as well. This is the reason many East Asians can’t slamdunk even if some can jump as high as any ethnics. Smaller hands too. But even between Asians, there is difference amongst countries. People from South East Asia may have longer arms and bigger eyes. Heights depend on where they live - north or south. Chinese have very different average heights between north and south. Personality really depends. This is where the stereotypes are made for Asians living in America. They as a group would grow up more timid because they find they look different, sometimes are treated differently, get the stereotypes and think they belong to that category (this reinforces). There are some traits that make Asian Americans look less shy in some areas though. Koreans in Korea have this streotypes that Korean Americans are less shy.

As an asian, I'll have to agree on "asians are good at studies", but this mostly is in the culture. From my experience, I had already started learning some letters and counting to 100 from a very young age, even before I had started school ( but if I'm being honest, I used to keep on forgetting). My parents just to make me study with all my might so that I wouldn't forget things and improve my intelligence. They had also made me study very well in order to pass my exams and many more. Actually this has paid off as I had became the 2nd topper of my class.

They become a problem when you start to suggest that the reason why this person is the way they are is because of immutable characteristic like race or that all of them are like this. Half my family Italian, and yes, they are loud and so are most of their Italian friends. The other side of my family is black, and yes, they are also pretty loud, along with their black friends. However when it comes to actual trends in genetic make up. We know that different races have physical characteristics that distinguish them because thats what race is to begin with. So yes, some races tend to be taller than others. Asians particular tend to be shorter on average than other ethnicities.

As Indonesian, I think I have to disagree to Aya about our shyness and our culture. A lot of Indonesians actually aren't shy, we just have language difficulty with foreign people. So, when a foreigner comes to our country, some of us probably won't get closer or start a conversation because we're afraid if we say something wrong in English. But still, many of us are actually talkative and likes to talk to foreigner with our standard English. Also for the culture part, I'd say Bali is the perfect example that shows that we actually quite famous (even though maybe some foreigner didn't know that Bali is in Indonesia). For addition, with "beef rendang" that got awarded as best food in the world by CNN in 2011, Indonesian's culture is actually pretty well known in my opinion 😊

Tall height western Europeans tend to be in the north, especially with the Dutch. Most of the rest of western Europe isn't really tall. Not short but not tall either. We aren't that tall as European Americans either. Notice that when Chinese from their northern regions visit the USA on vacation or on a business trip that they look taller on average then us European Americans. Other regions of people in central and western Asia make us European Americans look shorter as well like with the Punjabi and the Persians. Africans have several tribes or populations that are taller to alot taller then European Americans and a majority of Europeans in western Europe as well. The Dinka, Maasai, Tutsi and Wolof and probably other African tribes or populations tower over us European Americans and most of western Europe. Several native American tribes are noticeably taller than us European Americans in these Indian Reservations. The Cheyenne tribe in particular looks atleast 6'0" on average for men and in their history have thought of the white, European race as short people.

It's a pity that when the culture question came up they so concentrated on k-pop and modern culture. East Asia has such a rich history and with that a rich culture. Everyone knows about the Buddhist temples of Thailand or the Samurai of Japan, the Forbidden Palace in China let alone the Wall or Angkor Wat in Cambodja. Don't sell yourself short. Culture is much more than music and food. As a European I don't think about those when talking about our culture, I think of the Renaissance and even the ancient Romans and Greeks. I think about art, achitecture, phylosophy. Asian culture is even older than ours and more known than many of these girls seem to realize. Who doesn't know Buddha or Confucius? Who doesn't know Hinduism or Taoism? The Eastern Asian modesty. One of the oldest civilizations, one of the richest history and culture and they think they are not well known. It's charming but at the same time a little bit sad as well. Be proud of your heritage just like everyone should.

In Asian countries the school system is run like a military system lol. There are strict policies and rituals that students have to abide by on a daily basis, they enforce respect and place importance on study. Tests are also all of your score so the greater enthesis on study means cram schools are popular. Asian countries also place more importance on extracurricular activities, clubs and so on so most students spend most of their free time around school still. It's just a much better environment for creating good studying habits and students who are focussed on it compared to how relaxed schools in Europe and America are. School has a greater importance in Asia and your life is over if you don't get good grades. Western schools are closer to how university is in Japan. Much more based on work and your own projects. You can take as long as you want to finish as long as you keep paying the fees lol. It's just schools that are super obsessive and strict because getting good results and stats makes your school richer.

As an Iranian I totally agree that Asians are good at studying. Because in Iran parents put a lot of pressure on their children, especially to be doctors. And in Iran the setuation is getting worse everyday so that's why the only way to get out of this country is to be super rich or study a lot and be a Genius. hmm, I think there are some stereotypes that apply to Asians from Asia, but not really Asian diaspora who were born/grew up in Western countries. I'm Asian American and I'm not "small," when I stand next to my relatives, my shoulders are broader? I'm very athletic. Maybe it's the food we eat as babies LOL I also did lots of sports that my relatives never did, like soccer, swimming, tennis. Alsooooo there are lots of Asian Americans who don't care about studying compared to kids from Asia I think. as a westerner, here are my personal stereotypes about each asian culture. China- ninjas, kung fu, buddha, sweet and sour pork, terraform rice farms, cheap manufacturing. Japan- tourist, sushi, high quality electronics, high quality cars, anime, sumo wrestling Korea- k-pop, good quality electronics and cars, kimchi, joint military training india-Hindu red dot, love cows, american call center workers, curry chicken Thailand- shrimp fried rice Vietnam- sorry for the war Mongolia- mongolian grill philippines, laos, tiawan, okinowa, indonesia, singapore, hongkong, - no stereotype. I think Singapore is a rich nation but since they dont make a car like japan or SKorea, i dont know anything about them.

My daughter is biracial and graduated summa cum laude in science from OSU-Columbus. Her height is 5’ 5”. My wife is of Filipino descent with a Ph.D. (permanent head damage🤣) in food science from the University of British Columbia. I think it's fair to say that my daughter's genes are partly attributable to her mother. Asians are just simply a smart breed of people.
