Dana watched her mother struggle for years as she battled throat and oral cancer after decades of smoking. "Everything she experienced,” Dana said of her mother, Terrie, “I was right there experiencing it with her." And yet, Dana found it difficult to quit smoking herself. Like her mom, Dana also started smoking as a young teen. As her health deteriorated, Terrie appeared in powerful commercials as part of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's "Tips From Former Smokers" campaign. #InsideEdition

My brother-in-law never stopped, so he died in a lot of pain at 50. My mother-in-law quit when she was 40. She lived into her 80s before she died of lung cancer. Even though she did eventually get cancer, she still had over 30 more years than my brother-in-law. The best thing to do is never start!

That is weird… I really wonder if her lung cancer in her 80s was actually connected to her smoking habit from over 40 years prior. I just quit myself 3 1/2 weeks ago, and so I’ve watched a ton of videos that explain the stages of healing as a timeline from the date someone quits habitual smoking (it’s great motivation). These videos explain that after 20 years, one’s risk of cancer is the same as a lifelong non-smoker. I also know that lifelong non-smokers can also get lung cancer… It is just not as likely.

I was born in March of 90. I started smoking at the age of 16 and smoked 2 packs a day for the next 10 years. I quit August 06, 2016 at the age of 26. It was very hard since I was in a life changing injury at the age of 22 and am now paralyzed. I shouldn't have started smoking again after my paralysis, but I did for 4 years before I couldn't handle it anymore and quit. The taste was horrible.

Believe it or not, my father has been a smoker since he was a teenager until now that he is 88 years of age. He is incredibly strong at his age, he can walk without any assistive device. The doctor says that it's senseless for him to stop smoking as he may suffer depression or anxiety.

I remember watching those commercials years ago. It's sad in what terri went thru because of that addiction to smoking. Those commercials really showed the consequences and it's what made me not interested in smoking. Sometimes i don't understand why people even smoke when they know that smoking can cause serious damage.

Used to smoke on weekends when i was out with the crowd, didn't want to stand out. Thank God i never developed addiction but i remember even those few i smoked had effect on my lungs. I remember i had shortness of breath and my immune system was weakened. Ever since i stopped i breathed with full capacity and felt much more energized. I really hope everyone wins over this addiction

I feel the daughter’s pain. I’m 36, I’ve been a 2 pack a day smoker for over 20 years at this point. My uncle was a 3 pack a day smoker for most of his life, and he died of mouth cancer recently. He was only 60. I’d give anything to be able to quit smoking, I’ve tried the nicotine spray, the nicotine gum, I’ve tried everything but every time I think about my uncle’s death I get stressed out and end up smoking a cigarette. I also don’t handle stress very well, and whenever I get stressed out, the first thing I usually end up doing is smoking a cigarette. I’m also a construction worker, and almost everyone in that industry is a heavy smoker, at least in Toronto where I live, so even if I can’t afford cigarettes I can easily bum one of one of my co-workers due to the industry I work in. Moral of the story kids, don’t ever start smoking as it’s the hardest thing in the world to quit. Anyone who can’t handle stress very well should never start, as anytime I’m stressed out I immediately start jonesing for a cigarette like crazy and usually smoke one after a while to avoid the nicotine agitation that comes with not smoking
