My Great Grandma left St. Helena’s Island SC in 1916. She was only 16 at the time. She left to escape the extreme racist south. She ended up in NY City where she started her family which included my Grandmother. My Grandma recently shared with me that my Great Grandma was Gullah Geechi and she practiced her beliefs until her death. My Grandma is Muslim. She does not practice the beliefs of her Anscetors. She said I remind her of her mother. I definitely believe I get my spiritual practices from my Great Grandma. I want to learn so much more about my roots. I’m very grateful for this channel ❤

A lot of Gullahs were Muslim being that some of them came from Sierra Leon, Senegal and Gambia. If you read Africanism in The Gullah Dialect they either had an African name or a Muslim apart from the one the enslaver gave them and even after slavery they kept this going. They would have names like Sabah or Khadijah and have a name like Sarah as well. One thing about West African Muslims though many still practice their own traditions along with Islam.

I would have been more like Yellow Mary. Explore the world young then lived my later years on the island. Yellow Mary is well aware of the darkness of the "New World" and how cruel it is.

My nana passed 12 days ago, and this movie popped up on my recommended. Theres various things that allow me to see that there's multiple signs of my nana, who is now my ancestor, is still guiding me, and she's active chile. But, the words that Nana Peazant says about the ancestors, I needed to hear those words. I needed them, and it was divine timing. Even the date for the movie....It's set August 19 1902..... My nana transitioned on August 20th. I love this movie. And im thankful that this movie and breakdown found me I would stay on the island

My great grandmothers were geechee who migrated to Dunbar South Carolina, my grandmother traveled north up to New York where I am but I still have family down in Dunbar, George Town and the South Carolinas. I just started resonating with my spirituality and this was a movie I had to watch. As soon as it started I was enamored. As soon as Nana started speaking I started crying because I could hear my grannies voice! When the son gave the granny the chewing tobacco I just got taken back to my grannies house and see her chewing tobacco. Beautiful movie! Even when they called yellow Mary a heffa I laughed because it sounded like my people. I would have moved north and took my traditions with me!

Just watched this movie for the first time and it SPOKE to me. The “it’s in you” part especially. When my grandma passed years ago I collected some of her hair from her comb with no knowledge of why to do that -I still don’t tbh so if anyone has any ideas of what to do with it I’d appreciate it. And I had a dream all my ancestors were wearing all white and some blue smiling and waving and my grandma walked out to them to take her “home”. So when everyone in the movie was wearing all white dresses I was like OMG - I felt so connected and understood. I’m definitely buying this on DVD before they try to write it out of history.

I know this is a old video, but I listened to your breakdown and went straight to Tubi to watch. Between you and Sunn Mcheaux I am loving everything I am learning about Gullah Geechee traditions. Wishing Black folk weren't so ashamed of where they come from, understanding what we were taught to be ashamed of was taken, and is being used but being fed back to us as thou shall not...

I would leave and move up North only if I knew for sure that I have a good opportunity up there waiting for me, but I would take my traditions with me and pass them down to my kids. I just watched this movie because of you and I have to say I really loved it. Well I kind of feel like I don’t know I would’ve stayed and then move my traditions up north because I love it there traditions and it was very family oriented and I feel like it was deep, rooted and connected so why would you want to that connection to your ancestor, your identity, your family. But I felt like they should’ve came back to visit that island because that’s where you’re from I didn’t like how they say that they would never come back.

Gratitude and Honor YaYa for this excellent recap/breakdown of such a wonderful movie that resonates so highly with many of our lives today. The writer addresses a multitude of relevant issues and you also recapped all of them except how the issue of yellow Mary being “ruined” result in a yellow-yellow daughter who seemed confused and completely disconnected from the family roots. Let’s highlight that issue cause I felt for her just as much as I did for Nana, who at least, in the end, got the peace that she deserved from her loved ones. As it was on the beginning, so shall it be in the begin-again We still dehyah

So excited! I literally just discovered and watched this movie a few weeks ago and haven’t had many folks to build dialogue with on the film. You did a fantastic synopsis ❤️ First off, I had no problem understanding them either. 😂 I discovered this movie as Ive started digging deeper into my genealogy/ancestry. 💯 agreed that was so powerful omg I definitely shed a few tears. I think I’d would also want to move north and see what was going on but that I’d eventually move back as I saw the people around me deciding to give up the culture we’d worked so hard to maintain post slavery. Just seems like, even though the island is a reminder of certain trauma and pain, It still felt like HOME. There was certainly an energy looming through the film that makes me want to travel to Igbo landing and other Gullah Geechee territories in real life. Planning to explore 👀
