Dave Allen was an alternative comedian before the they became popular, he was unique in many ways and I'm old enough to remember watching him back in the seventies when he was considered by many to be very controversial and received death threats from some in the catholic community in Ireland, generally in the UK he was very popular whether you were religious or not though. Much missed by many, myself included.

I was a Glasgow Taxi driver and picked Dave Allan up from the theatre he was appearing in and took him to a house and asked if I could come back at 10:30 and take him to his hotel. I arrived on time and rang the doorbell a lady answered and I asked for Dave and she said Oh he’s not leaving yet then the voice called is that my taxi and then he came and left. He apologised that his host had tried to send me away. He was a true gentleman.

Jodi was so distracted by the backdrop, it helped her dodge the religious slant. Dave Allen tells a great story and I am certain as teacher's you will love watching him teaching his son to tell the time. The frustration around children's responses and trying to explain to them will have you in stitches. I'm sure you both will have had moments like this.

Dave's humour was totally lost on these two. This particular clip was guaranteed to lose most in the US, as it contained jokes on religion, and clever wordplay combined with subtlety. A US audience wants the laughs telegraphed half-an-hour before a punchline.

Dave Allen was raised in Ireland as a Roman Catholic. Many of his stories refer to things he had to do or believe according to his religion. There are many, many, humerous situations that most people can relate to, from all walks of life. Note: he does not ridicule religion: just points out some of the bizare beliefs and sometimes mentions how he slowly transitioned to being an atheist. But he is a comedian first and foremost: not some angry atheist trying to make points. I explained that because of your own personal beliefs that tend to cloud your viewpoints. Cheers.

About the lack of colour, it is old footage, shot with old camera technology, plus it has been copied many times (losing a little more colour each time), plus I suspect this copy was once recorded on VHS tape too, which is very low definition! In other words, we are lucky to have it to watch at all! Despite all that, Dave Allen is always well worth a watch...

The glass contains whisky 🥃 hence the colour. He had his own BBC TV series in the late 1960s and early 1970s plus appeared in this format in his BBC TV series Dave Allen at Large always with a glass of whisky. He always got complaints because a lot of the sketches in his shows and jokes in his standup were about religion and the absurdity of it to his mind and especially the Roman Catholic church with him being Irish.

OMG Dave Allen was an Irishman from the Republic of Ireland 🇮🇪 in the 70’s, a brilliant lapsed Catholic comedian who drank whiskey and used to smoke on stage until his doctor told him to stop after Dave had a heart attack. He eventually died in early ‘80’s from cirrhosis of the liver. He was most famous for live performances taunting the Catholic Church. Hilarious clever humour.

You're seeing a small clip of his show that has been re-encoded to upload to KZbin, no doubt they messed with the saturation levels because it was full colour. Your own eye is carrying out most of these tricks on you, the background being lined/textured was pulling the colour out of your perception. The glass is probably whiskey or something similar, you don't sip water or ginger ale (which is mainly for kids or mixing drinks over here), you gulp it, you sip strong alcohol...

My family emigrated Ireland for Australia in 1958. We grew up watching Dave Allen - who, BTW got his start on Australian television. My very proud Irish Catholic father loved Dave. Dad was friends with lots of the clergy and they all loved Dave too, including the Bishop, according to Dad. I went to see Dave live in Melbourne circa 1986. I injured myself laughing so much. We met up after the concert, obviously drunk, and flirted with my wife.

Other comedians would mimic his main mannerism - using his fingerless hand to brush off his non-existent dandruff from his shoulders. You’ll also notice how animated he can be whilst telling his jokes, but never does he manage to knock away his whiskey glass. He would often also smoke cigarettes…two vices that weren’t considered off limits to state-sponsored tv in the late 70s - early 80s !

Hi Guys, firstly, sorry Jodi, that was from his B.B.C. Tv show in colour, but remember the B.B.C. only started with colour around `69/70. I was watching him with my parents from the late `60`s throughout the `70s. His longest show was (Dave Allen At Large), it consisted of joke-telling sections interspersed with sketches. For the sketches he had a regular group of comedy actors with him, who I also saw in other British Tv/films over the years. On You Tube you can find a compilation of some of the sketches, it has been split into 4 parts, i.e. (The Best Of Dave Allen.....The Comedy Sketches 1/4, 2/4 etc.) I think they run at around 10 mins each. Great to see you reacting to Dave, he is greatly missed.

Not only was this from a time when Colour TV was relatively new, but you have to remember that this was probably copied across from an early Tape system, and 625 lines at 50hz was also fairly new. originally TV had 405 lines so looked grainy. All but the newest TV's could not show programmes at 625 lines. Not only that but I think US TV used a different system again. So Colour wasn't great when it first started, but then there are all the other differences to take into account in converting this to a compressed format to be shown on You Tube. Yes, this conversion could probably have been done better with all the new technology, it could have been enhanced, so it also depends on who put this video up on to YT

@@grabtharshammer Yes, I only know of this "405-625 Lines", as I was telling another reactor about the costume drama (The Forsyte Saga). Which was the last British drama series broadcast in B/W, that decided not to wait & be in colour. Partly, as they already had got together a great cast & were worried about losing someone, if they delayed. But, also because at that time in 1967, not enough of the new sets were in use.

From (this) Irishman's perspective, the best Irish jokes are told by the citizens of Ireland - no-one else comes close. That Allen can take a controversial subject matter such as religion, & make fun of it is all part of what we term, the craic (pronounced 'crack') - it's a sublime form of conversation, & more often than not, very dry, dark humour; the "Gideon" reference is made as an observation, whereby, in many motels/hotels you will find a copy stashed in a drawer of your room, altho', in these latter times, deference to any religious orthodoxy is now virtually eradicated - primarily due to the disaffection toward same. If you are of a mindset to appreciate this laconic style of humour, then you'll be a life-long fan of Dave Allen; he questions established authority, & spares no quarter for the individuals who roam this planet projecting their hyperbole. He is (also) a past master of observing the sublimely ridiculous attributes of the human condition, with all its attendant flaws; &, as is the case with most of Ireland's populace, he is the consummate storyteller. Typical of Allen, at the completion of every show he did, runs with a respectful salutation: "May your God go with you..." 😉

A close friend of mine told me a story not so long ago about a work colleague explaining to him who the comedian was “yesss… he used to sit there on stage with a glass 1/4 of whiskey, and the joke was he would have a glass constantly refilled, oh how it was hilarious” We googled the comedian and it came up with someone completely different, will be nice to finally show him who it is 😂

The reason his hands look funny is because he was born with one finger with the end missing. This was the hand that was on the glass. If you look carefully you see several times during the video. My favourite Dave Allen sketch and he was a great comedian.

He wasn't born like that, he lost the top of his finger in a childhood accident.

Dave Allen was irish, but he lived most of his life in England, after spending his childhood in Ireland, which might explain his peculiar accent. He was fiercely proud of his Irishness, even though he didn't live there. Much of his comedy material was informed by his early Catholic upbringing and education, which he largely rebelled from, so he was well known for his religious jokes, which made him somewhat controversial in the 1970s I highly recommend his comedy routine on Airplanes.
