Only flaw with this is the exceedingly frustrating camerawork that focuses on Joe’s face or hi-hat foot at the worst times🤬
Dave Brubeck-piano. Paul Desmond-alto. Eugene Wright-Bass. Joe Morello-drums

Morello's left hand is faster than a speeding bullet, he can jump over other drummers in a single bound, doesn't need Lois Lane or Perry White. Will never forget the Quartet's performance at NTSU in the Fall of 1962....we had read in "Downbeat", or heard about Brubeck's drummer, and how the other band members just left the stage whilst Joe annihilated an audience.. well, he did and I'm still knackered.

The fact he was this amazing and legally blind... even with 20/20 vision he would just be the best... it calms the mind only to melt it then to bring it back again.. I litreally could just sit back and listen to Joe Morello on drums and Paul Desmond on alto sax for like 15 albums in a row.. no other sounds... im a perfect world bing is on vocals with them but thats just my dream..

Drums accompany. This solo is an accompaniment to a Sax, bass and piano part from his 3 bandmates........ in his head. In his head, the 3 are playing and he accompanies what he imagines they might play. That is a skill you drummers can't identify. He is not doing a drummer alone in his basement during rudiments. He is playing to Dave in his mind while Dave does not make a note.

Another Ludwig master....could not understand why he switched to DW. In later life. These sounded brilliant. Just using a 4 piece kit...not 14, like some modern day drummers. The camera man’s facial shots of Joe’s, were a pain....he should have concentrated more on his playing.

@@thecrippledrummer Blame the director, not the camera operator. He only shoots what he's told. The director makes the calls on what goes out over the air -- which shots and for how long they stay with a given shot. Seems like you can always tell if the director tries too hard to be "creative" instead of working with the melody -- like using a long shot during a solo, instead of something tight on the hands. Seems like that could be worked out at rehearsal.

Most of the time he caught Joe's right ear, or a straight on shot of his face. They do the same thing with dancers, even step dancers: they show their shoulders and faces when they're doing the most difficult and beautiful steps and it drives me nuts. Too bad we don't have a video of Joe's performance. Lost forever, we'll just have to listen, but it would have been nice to have seen it, too.

Had folks not been so bamboozled by Rich's snappy snare and infinite cockiness, he'd never have been considered the best by so many. Buddy Rich was never the MJ or LBJ. He was the Wilt Chamberlain or the Shaq. Among the top half dozen or so, was often the top dog for many years, but never ~the~ all-time drummer. /that racist jagoff Ginger Baker was better than Buddy Rich, all things considered
