while in high school in the early 70's i went to a friends house after school. music was raging out of his basement. we went to check it out and there was this band practicing for the newport jazz festival in rhode island... my friend was alan dawson jr. exposure to this band up close and personal changed my appreciation for music for life.

Alan Dawson master musician and drummer . His creative taste , technique and fluidity is a class of its own. Great great drummer. Do not compare drummers too much and who is best , Dawson is the very top and totally inspiring. Who is better Rembrandt, Picasso , Goya , Velasquez, Van Gogh, Manet ? Limit it ,respect , enjoy and assess them in their own right.Must have been fantastic experience studying with Alan Dawson, his book is also excellent.

It’s difficult to say “best” when it applies here. “Best” is subjective, a percussionist may not have the highest skill set, but maybe his style just hits a person in the right spot. I think Paul Desmond and Dave B are the best, I’m sure that there are some fair and logical arguments to say otherwise. I love what Allen does here though, the whole vibe makes me jealous that I wasn’t there!

Building on the original, as improvisers of this magnitude did quite well. Paul is as lyrical as ever; Gerry's baritone is a welcome addition; Dave negotiating the 5/4 time is a treat; Jack holding down the beat as did Senator Wright did in the DBQ glory days; and Alan taking the drum "torch" from Joe and running with it in a way that must have even made the great rock drummers of that day take notice.

I remember seeing the DBQ once when Dave said: "we thought we'd try it with a clarinet." It was well after Paul's departure, the sax parts were being done by a guy on clarinet. Different. Excellent sound. I've seen the quartet a dozen times, they are always right on top of it.
There is another live stream of this tune on youtube, called " The Last Set at Newport " even more powerfully, you may like it too ! ENJOY

You know what i think. I think.. the drummer is joking the team at 13:11 with faking to come back and the rest rejoins. The base player is grabing his bas but than the drummer takes his moment again and you see Dave Brubeck enjoying the moment. My take on this they had some fun with that. :D

What do you all think about the difference between "having a preference" - say, for a drummer's performance - versus "one is better than the other"? I love Joe Morello, but damn if there ain't some masterful drumming on this, especially starting at about 8:30! And what about at 10:30 and 11:19, etc.?? That's insanely good drumming. So, of course, it's "not the same" as Joe Morello's take, and you might like his better but COME ON, saying it's better is ridiculous (not that I'm saying Dawson's is better, which is my point). They're different. Enjoy them both. That's the beauty of improvised performances by wonderful musicians. Anyway...leaving my soap box now :-)
