That's right; it's actually too good clarinet tone for this jazz piece. For example, in this piece Paul Desmond doesn't play alto saxophone as a classical saxophonist, but as a jazz saxophonist, with much huskiness and deliberate obstruction of the fulness of his tone. If the classical tone quality is full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon, then the jazz sound is more like a sparkling wine.

It's an 18-key Bb (soprano). The tuning is the same as my Bb clarinet but mines a 17-key.
