As Much as Dave seems to love and respect Martin he does seem just a little bit jilted here. I'm just glad that they managed to work stuff out and that Playing the Angel exists. I'm sure Dave was thrilled about the success of "Suffer Well" I also, personally really love "I Want it All" it's such a phenomenal song and the lyrics pierce my heart just as much as the vocals do.

Since Martin had no problem with Alan Wilder contributing songs (ie Two Minute Warning, Work Hard, If you want or Christmas Island) i guess Daves work back then was just too crappy to be considered worthy as a Depeche Mode release.

From that period I think some magic vibe was lost.. I mean Dave always had a strong image.. But after Exciter like everything was gone..

Yes, Alan was a classically trained pianist who was very technical with production. He pointed out in an interview that DM songs are lacking a human groove and beat. You can hear the colder more robotic type drum beats and grooves in most of the DM songs after the Songs of Faith and Devotion album, which was the last album Alan worked on.
