Just to clarify once and for all: Taylor was not at the band yet when this song was recorded, actually Dave recorded the drums secretely which resulted on a fight with William Goldsmith, the drummer back then.
@StephenTaylorDrums6 жыл бұрын

Taylor gets a little bit tired when playing this. The energy required to play this is pretty awesome. Thank you Dave for doing this song! ^^

I wonder if the reason for that fight is really because Dave recorded it behind his back or cause he put him in trouble with that Kick work out LOL.

I know this tutorial is an old one but….I’m substituting for a drummer and this is on the set list. I always try dissecting the songs on my own first and then see what some other people have come up with. Your breakdown is the only note for note accurate dissection I’ve found. There are some great interpretations and fantastic “hides” that create a good feel. But every one that I’ve seen cover up what, for me, is the hardest portion of the song. Maintaining the foot pattern while playing the tom grooves at the beginning, during the chorus and the end. Holy cow tap dancing around a campfire that’s a challenge for me. Got the foot speed and stamina, no problem there. NOT playing the notes that are not supposed to be played while doing those fills. I’ll be able to do it but I’m spending a lot more time on coordination stuff than I imagined. It’ll be worth the work when it *SNAP* …all of a sudden falls into place. Thanks, as always, for you absolutely thorough break down and attention to detail in this tutorial. You’re one of the best.

As you say, I’m fairly sure they did a bit of dubbing in the studio for the intro. If I was feeling lazy I’d just be playing eighth notes on the closed high hats, with the basic kick/snare pattern underneath it for the intro. No one except you and maybe one or two drummers in the crowd would ever notice/care😆

Stephen Taylor, will you teach us Everlong or maybe some soundgarden or System of a Down with this same level of clarity? I love the way i you you teach it. I still had to slow it down on some but it was perfect. I found myself writing some down to comprehend some order when you list all the kick beats separately and so on. I love it. This is one of those concepts that a lot of us tend to underestimate. I have been playing drums for over 14 years, most of the time I don't find classic Rock, alternative.... Really challenging And honestly I used to underestimate the whole genre in general. Until I tried to play my Hero and "Scentless Apprentice" by Nirvana. it was shocking to me how I struggled that much with those kick pattern like It's my first week playing drums LOL. Knowing that I can play advanced linear flashy stuff, reduiments and fast clean kick doubles It crushed my ego. It was a nice humiliating experience and a reminder to return to basics, practicing straight singles. No matter how good and fast you are with short singles or doubles those continues patterns are gonna be challenging if not addressed cause they require endurance and a diffrent technique. Thank you Stephen for shedding light on that.

Sooo... I’ve been playing this song wrong for years in my band! Thanks for showing me the way. LOL This was one of the first tunes we learned when my cover band started playing together 4 years ago. I don’t do the toms at the beginning, but the kick snare groove is the same. I do a slight variation of the chorus. I’ve never heard the isolated drum part, so I also never noticed the ghost notes. I’m excited to work in all of this as you demonstrated! #goals My band recently added “Everlong” to the set list (it kicks my butt). We also do “The Pretender” and their version of “Have a Cigar”.

Enjoying these song lessons Stephen, including the Mr. Brightside vid! Any chance you could do a video in future on 'Superstition', particularly breaking down the end-of-chorus fills? I really liked the video and the approach but while I am still working on it the way I am getting it down is to do their live version, also their studio 1st track. This allowed me to focus on the bass drum and hat and not worry about the tom overlay part and also trying to learn how to play open handed which is a ways out for me. I would like to be able to play both parts at once but the energy of the song carries live well without the overdubbed toms. It still is a leg workout but one thing at a time.

This is probably going to sound like a stupid question but I was wondering, as a noob on the drumkit, is there a video you have or something you recommend me to watch for learning how to get better at drum rolls? Like I said I just started learning the drums and I seem to have the most trouble with drum rolls so far, not sure if it's the way I hold the drum sticks or something else

Very good video, thanks a lot... But I'm still in doubt as to whether another person could be playing the hihat apart on the Toms-Take because, when listening to the multitrack of the song, On the first part of the intro, the hi-hat stops sounding on the snare flams... And in the second part there are crashes in the and of 2, (not only crashes on the groove-take) and the high toms stop sounding ... the drummer has to stop playing the toms in order to crash... Well, thats what I hear.
@mjacobus3 жыл бұрын
Awesome lesson, Stephen Taylor thank you so much! 2 questions I would like to ask: 1) Any tips on how to build the endurance for this song's kick? I actually have been practicing this song as a kick exercise, but I quickly lose precision and, not only mess up the tempo, but also I add a few more kicks than necessary. I think lots of my lack of confidence in my kick comes from the fact that I still haven't found the best throne posture. 2) How do you find the separated drum tracks? Do you use an app like Moises, to split tracks, or you just find them on the internet? I know drum tracks of popular songs like this one can easily be found on youtube, but I wonder how they were extracted in the first place - maybe someone leaked the original tracks, or perhaps there is an app like Moises that does an even better job 🤔

As you mentioned that Dave Grohl writes drums parts like if were a song, so Dale Crover writes drums as a team with the guitar and that makes Melvins songs pretty dynamic because the drums talks with bass and guitar to be as one. Please review some Melvins songs like "Hag me", or "Boris".

Fantastic breakdown! I was able to get the mechanics down for that intro, and it's a blast, but you weren't kidding about about the drum foot workout. Dave took the beat from the Melvins song "Night Goat". All credit for this beat should go to Dale Crover who is an incredible drummer. I encourage you to listen to the original and Dale who is hugely respected in the underground. The Melvins got Dave the job with Nirvana.

After seeing this, I watched some live versions of Taylor (the other Taylor) playing it, and I gotta say, this tutorial makes the song more complex than it actually is when played live. For example, I didn't see Taylor do any of the ghost notes, and he played the intro as if it were simply the verse (no tom pattern at all). He also simplified the tom pattern during the chorus. I know the "real" Taylor :D is teaching this the way it is on the recording, but I was a bit disappointed to see the coolest stuff about this drum part basically ignored live.
