To all the folks saying that Grohl is an average drummer at best, and that 'beginners can do what he does': it's not just what you play, it's how you play it. And Grohl has one of the most solid rock grooves in the industry, which is what gave Nirvana it's foundation, and helped queens of the stoneage create one of the most solid albums in rock and roll history. I'm sorry, but if you think a beginner can match this groove, you still have a lot to learn.
@T0BBi9410 жыл бұрын
Yes! it is not just about who can drum the fastest or the most advanced it is about the music and how the groove feels. Seems like many are missing that aspect. I also think it is wrong to put out lables such as "Best drummer in the world" as it is about preferences and what you like. The fastest and most advanced drums does not always sound the best..

I thought you were about to say something negative about grohl's drumming, but then i read the rest were cool!
@craigwthomson777210 жыл бұрын
Not only that, a lot of people don't know Grohl plays every instrument. Whether or not you think the The Foo Fighters debut album was great, it was a pretty solid effort and spawned a handful of hit singles, and those songs were all written and performed by Grohl himself, drums, bass, guitar and vocals. He's also a decent piano player. I think there was a guest guitar solo, but other than that, Grohl wrote, performed and recorded everything for the debut album himself, got a band together to play those songs on tour, and that was the birth of Foo Fighters. Not only that, he could have just kept playing Nirvana-like material and cashed in after Kurt Cobain died, but he went his own direction. He's not known for following trends or writing songs based on hack chord progressions proven to sell millions of records, instead relying on lots of fresh, original material. He's not just an extraordinary drummer, as his work with Queens of the Stone Age proves; he's a gifted musician in general and a rare example of artistic integrity in a music industry driven largely by profits. Loved the limerick, LOL

As a drummer of 23 years myself, Dave still impresses me so much. The creativity and the subtleties of his drum tracks are amazing. Simple? Not always, learn to play for example "My Hero" with that crazy kick drum pattern working together with the toms. Definitely not as easy as it seems..

7 yrs. it’s not speed. Speed can be built with practice, any drummer can get good speed. It’s creativity. It’s how you play, it’s how you put what you feel into drums. His 22min PLAY song demonstrates that perfectly, it’s not how fast. cuz that’s childish, it’s the way he articulates his playing, which makes him one of the best drummers out there.

I was reading the comments and saw that many people really hate Dave's drumming. I am one to say that Dave is an amazing drummer. Sure he can't play as fast as Tony Royster Jr. but speed doesn't matter. Dave's groove is on point as well as his ability to write awesome drum parts. Listen to his Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, Foo Fighters, Sound City and Queens of the Stone Age drum tracks. They are just so damn good, and I know that no other drummer in the world could write parts that suit the songs any better. Hats off to you Mr. Grohl.

I respect Dave Grohl as a musician and a guy - nothing against him at all and I completely agree that speed isnt everything. However I wouldnt say he's the only drummer in the world that could have written those parts to those bands. Like, what he writes is pretty straight up rock drumming that joe average would write in my personal opinion. Like I never hear a part and think 'dave grohl wrote that', although this is my opinion and by no means a fact

are you kidding? His timing is perfect, and he serves the song rather than outshines it. The reason his playing is simple is because he writes drum parts that are actually MUSICAL and repeats fills so they become more like hooks and chorus lines rather than the 3 bars in the song where the drummer gets to show his chops.

Despite my useless diatribe concerning Dave Grohl, the fact is this: Along with Ringo, Bonzo, Ginger and Moonie, Dave has created some of the most memorable drum parts in music history. His playing with Nirvana is solid, tasteful simplicity that packs a visceral punch in the guts! It's a shame that Nirvana had to end the way it did, but the music stands among the greatest rock in the world! I hope to craft my own drum parts with the same taste, power and simplicity that Dave crafted his. Only, mine have a little 'twist' in there! Enjoy it all Dave, you've earned it!
@GritsNDesu11 жыл бұрын
I don't think he's THAT good, but I enjoy his drumming and I do enjoy his songwriting in Probot/Foo Fighters.
@Earthdogbonzo311 жыл бұрын
GritsNDesu Dave's drum parts in Nirvana are simple, solid and in good taste for what the music needed. I don't think he's that good myself either, and especially in Nirvana I can hear his limitations, especially in tuning the instrument, it's all through the board. It also had to be really tough to cope with Kurt's drug/heroin distorted, addicted personality. But why does he continue with the high school immaturity? I don't go out of my way to listen to Vultures or Fighters, it doesn't have any real soundscape or emotion to hold me. But hey, he was in the right place at the right time and the music stands.
@GritsNDesu11 жыл бұрын
Earthdogbonzo3 I mean it's pretty clear his days in Nirvana were his early days as a drummer. There's a reason every first time rock drummer can learn Smells Like Teen Spirit in 5 minutes. He's gotten a lot better over the years, though. I love his stuff on Probot. His Queens stuff was good too.
@Severen4510 жыл бұрын
GritsNDesu If you actually listen to that song it's really not as simple as some people think. There is the simple clique snare beat but his foot is doing alot more on top of it (single pedal). The Queens stuff (primarily no one knows and song for the dead) really show his top quality playing, but for time and musicality I'd haft to go with the Vultures tracks. Bottom line Dave Grohl is the shit in rock drumming.
@GritsNDesu10 жыл бұрын
bryan harris Smells Like Teen Spirit will never require much nuance to learn to play. It's simple. Yeah there's maybe some somewhat quick kick patterns here and there, but it's all stuff one could learn fairly quickly.

Dave Grohl is an outstanding drummer, and has such a thunderous, rock solid style. I just think had he not transitioned to guitar for Foo Fighters, he'd be more on top in the industry as a "go to" drummer. I love the Foo Fighters and I respect the success Grohl has had through his life. But I think with his known drumming being with Nirvana which was over 20 years ago, to leading the Foo Fighters and playing guitar, a lot of people forget how great of a drummer and how talented Grohl is.....and he doesn't carry around that "My shit don't stink" ego attitude, like people like Don Henley have, who's a straight line average drummer....not even in the same ballpark as Grohl. Grohl is a severely underrated individual in the music industry.

I honestly don't understand how people can compare drummers like Dave Grohl and Chad Smith to drummers like Tony Royster Jr. and Thomas Pridgen. That's like comparing deep dish pizza to sushi, or apples to oranges. They're all good and they're all professional drummers (like it or not); it is really a preference thing. No matter how good they are, they have an audience that DW drums will gain if they endorse said artist, so of course they're all going to play for DW. It's all business, baby.

Because music is an art, created by a practitioner of the art. Being technically gifted, well studied, or anything else, doesn't make a person a great drummer. What makes them a great drummer is the music the create through the use of the drum kit, and in relationship with the other musicians they choose to play with. Dave's contribution to the history of music as a member of Nirvana is among the greatest contributions a drummer can make. The creation of really great art can happen in so many ways, by so many measures, that it's sometimes hard to compare. Top does not necessarily mean the best. It could also mean the most influential. By that standard, Dave for sure is a Top 10 Drummer.
@theheritic20911 жыл бұрын
No it is not "one of the greatest contributions a drummer can make" play for the London Philharmonics percussion for years, now that is a contribution that is great. And if anything being the drummer for TOOL has made a far more superior contribution than this dude Dave could even fathom. Influential, sure, but that dosen't shit mean if your influence surpasses ones own skill.

It is mounted on floor tom legs and brackets. The reason it has hoops like a bass drum is because we do not carry metal hoops that big. Sound good? :)

@jcarbaj5 Just to clear things up we do not pay out artists. There are different levels endorsement and Dave is under the "A" level. This means he gets all of his DW gear at no charge. We are very happy to have Dave Grohl playing our drums and hardware.

@killjoyshidae1208 It is a custom order but not terribly uncommon. It is technically a bass drum with bass drum hoops but the difference is that is has floor tom legs with brackets. A proper Gong drum has the head that stretches around the shell so it is best to tune tighter to compensate for the way the head is mounted.

@23ero23 thank You. You guessed right, The Rev is no longer on our roster because he passed away. We did leave him on for about a year after he passed.

Ouch! This was actually a photo shoot. Our photog had our camera to take photos of the photo shoot(if that makes sense) that can record video also. We thought it would be cool to show the photo shoot footy along with the outtakes of Atom's and Dave's interview also. This is the end product of all that. Hopefully there will be a day of a Dave Grohl drum type video but that would be a hard thing to accomplish with his schedule. :)

@bourland27 totally. We Love what he had to say at the Grammy's. It's not about being perfect. It's about heart and soul.

@LoZfan95 haha. yes, many people are thrown off by the Collector's Series badges. Honestly, he currently (and thus far) only uses our Jazz Series shells, but we put Collector's badges on for branding purposes. We knew he wouldn't be using our DW Logo bass drum head, so we wanted to have the dw logo on the kit somewhere, and the Jazz Series badge dw logo is very small in comparison.

He loves playing that's for sure! As you hear him mention this was the most endorsement promotion he's ever done for a drum company. Humble as pie but loves his DW's and plays them with true pro skills.
