The demo tapes recorded with Crover when Nirvana was trying to find the sound they wanted for Nevermind. It was right after they fired their previous drummer Chad Channing. Who played and wrote all drum parts for Bleach. But Ghrol himself wrote a lot of drum parts and did all of them on In Utero. Fun fact he even did vocals on a song called Marigold on the deluxe edition of In Utero with Cobain on drums.

Dave really is something else. Whenever FF tours, there is usually a small stretch in each show where Dave plays drums and lets Taylor Hawkins sing/play guitar for a song or two. Taylor is one of the best drummers in rock today, and he plays a hell of a show each time I've seen FF. But when Dave and Taylor switch, and Dave plays drums for a song or two, it's pretty incredible what the band turns into. Dave is playing on the same set, with the same heads and cymbals and equipment and sound team as Taylor. And he sound so much bigger and authoritative. Dave just liiives in the pocket. It's pretty incredible. I strongly recommend everyone go see Dave live if you ever get the chance.

The cutting edge of drumming in the '70s was pretty much the end of the line as far as taste goes. In other words, classic rock is rock. @C. Doom Schneider It's not all about technique and speed. It's more about playing with soul and originality than it is about who the fastest drummer is. Neil Peart is technically better than the three you mentioned and plays with tons more soul and feeling. John Bonham, Keith Moon, and Bill Bruford are all much better drummers too. And all have something none of the drummers you mentioned have: They had the ability of coming up with memorable drum beats and patterns for songs that will be listened to and remembered, long after the drummers you mentioned are gone and forgotten. And what's this obsession you have with Dave Grohl? He has made really good music over the years with many musicians. Was part of a band that helped to define a generation and it's sound. Nirvana made some of the best grunge rock of the 90's. What have any of the drummers you mentioned really ever done? Besides technically play well? Not much.

There are no earphones, headphones or any playback.. To anyone with music or studio experience do you understand what that means. Genius. Pure Genius. He has the entire composition mapped out in his head and lays down the drum track without any backing track or even more shockingly click track.. The engineer could sync afterwards to facilitate overdubs, but not using the grid makes the music breathe and feel human. Fucking Epic. I love Taylor Hawkins, but can only imagine him talking to a therapist about some inadequacy issues hehe.. Taylor is the Man, but Dave is a fucking Beast. He should be cloned 4 more times to make the most epic band of all time...

Mario de Sa Dude, I don’t think so. This is an “isolated” drum track, meaning all other instruments were removed. This is same footage used from the video. No way in hell hes playing long to a 23 min song in his head. Can’t believe people would actually think that. Of course he’s playing along w the track, it was just removed for this video...
@MiguelDamas6 жыл бұрын
He used cans for all the other overdubs but it seems to me he was using in-ears at 6:52. It's low resolution footage so who knows. If he wasn't then he did it without the benefit of other tracks. No way a speaker wouldn't bleed into a dozen live mics.
@TimSavage-drummer6 жыл бұрын
It's not that hard for a good drummer. You don't "need" a click track if you can keep time, your band is well rehearsed and doesn't rely on editing to get the track right, similarly playing with no backing track isn't a problem if you know the song. I've done the drum parts many times without the band or a backing track. Click tracks still have their place for certain tracks especially if there are programmed parts, but some songs need the space to play with tempo.

Lots of misconceptions about recording drums here. I'll try to address some: - *"The drums were pre-recorded and he's just playing over the track":* His movement matches the sound perfectly without any camera cuts. It would be harder to match a prerecorded track perfectly than to just use this take. - *"It's more impressive because he's playing without a metronome:"* He's playing without a metronome, but recording drums without a metronome can be easier. Human playing varies a lot in tempo, especially when expressing a lot of emotion. It gives it a natural feeling. The problem comes when matching the other instruments (bass, guitar, etc.) to this track, which have to follow this specific take very closely, with all of its nuisance. - *"He's recorded this without any guides":* There's no way to know. He's probably at least listening to a pre-recorded basic mockup or skeleton of the song. You don't see any cables but his ears are not very visible. As a professional musician, he's definitely at least wearing ear plugs, which could also be in-ear monitors, feeding him the track. It would be quite hard to display the amount emotion he shows in this track by only imagining everything in his head, but not impossible though. - *"This is **_easier_** because of _X_":* Just no, recording a perfect drum take for a 22 minute song is a monumental achievement, specially while also being recorded for a music video. It doesn't seem to me he "cheated" in any way. This is pure talent and effort and there's no way to take away from it. Just great stuff.

i used to not be a fan of dave’s drumming. that was when i first started and i feel like i progressed faster than most drummers do after a year or so i didn’t understand why he didn’t do a bunch of intricate fills when he was in nirvana. but now it makes more sense just cause he wanted to serve the song and not really add to it. and that is definitely what he did. but after hearing more stuff he played in like QOTSA and the early foo fighters stuff. he definitely experimented with more fills and beats. especially in queens, that is definitely my favorite drumming of his. and i can’t thank him enough, and ofc bonham too because i wouldn’t be the drummer i am without playing along to every single nirvana song hundreds of times. but i’ve come back to this video a few times and it’s just crazy to think how long he’s been drumming now, and how crazy good he is now. he needs to make more solo stuff. but also it’s just interesting seeing how different different drummers play. my dad has been drumming for about 27 years now. he could not be more different than dave, to be fair he played in a progressive band. but just super long crazy fills and insane beats that you could only come up with after having so many hours playing. anyway enjoy my rant about things
