Even Hawkins didn't get to record much with FF at first, Dave was likely precious about his drum parts as it's his baby. We'll see how much input Josh gets with the next album.

I think Dave referred to it as red light fever. Cramping up as soon as the record button was pressed. Which took a couple of albums for Taylor to get rid of.

@@antikriz From what I've read, Taylor had horrible stage fright (you wouldn't know to watch him drumming live) so perhaps that transferred to the studio. Funny, whenever I played live I approached it as though the red light was on, like it was being recorded. It's different for everyone. Even jamming along to tracks I still feel the same. Josh is a studio veteran, so it may not be such an issue with him even though it's Dave's band; be interesting to hear the new stuff whenever it'll pop up.

I was in LOVE with the first self-titled FF album. God it was so sincere, so down to earth, so introvert... as if Dave was playing all those heartfelt, catchy and somewhat "shoegaze-y" songs in a small garage in my neighborhood, as if we would have a few beers after the last song "Exhausted". Then came the second album, "The Color and The Shape". so MTV oriented, such a slick production... Dave Grohl's screams sounded as if they weren't coming from his heart anymore, they were a role. Like it or not, there was an undeniable transition. William was the casualty I believe. Dave never speaks of this openly, not even in his autobiography. Dave is universally known as the "good guy" and maybe he doesn't want to tarnish the image. Maybe he still regrets the way he handled things that led to William's departure. Either that, or there is simply NOTHING to say about. Either case, I am really curious about this. As for me, I stopped following FF after the second album, it stopped speaking to me.

William didn’t cut it. So Dave cut him.

I've heard the versions with William playing and they are loose in the wrong way and just off. There is a difference between playing live well and recording well, the studio is the great divider because you can't get away with good enough. Taylor said he only played half the drums of Nothing Left To Lose because he just wasn't studio ready and wasn't offended that Dave did the other half, he saw it as a learning opportunity.
