It's about knowing every millisecond of the drum tracks you've created, having played them hundreds of times onstage and getting your muscle memory down to a point where you just don't even think. You can see here that Dave is taking care of every single stroke, every single note carries full meaning. The other commenter mentioned Lars - I'm not a Lars hater, but he plays his own drum tracks as if he's a cover band drummer. He'd do well to just keep it simple and go back to playing what is on the records, rather than making some of the outlandish improvs that he does on the slower songs.

This (me) Gen X-er is putting in a lot of time to make up for the time lost before and after 2.5 years back behind the kit, i still feel i have 10 more to go before i can call my self anywhere near ok. That is how Dave and all the other famous boomer drummers think and a lot of them will blow most good millennial drummers away! Stop being arrogant and start working on you flight schedule.

6 years since video was posted and I still watch it at least twice a week. Dave really showed the depths of his skill here. The drumming might seem simple to some, espcecially if you listen to a younger generation of drummers, but the touches and fills especially with the cymbals are unmatched even today. His playing is deceptively complex and the not many drummers can maintain the tempo during fills and then dial it up and down while matching the pace of the song. He might have slowed over the years and perhaps not progressed Ala Gene Hoglan but he remains one of the finest drummers and of the few whose influence will extend beyond the genre

Dear Dave,Excellent drumming, man! I used to play with a full set of Paiste RUDEs back in the early 80s. I was the first drummer in the Bay Area punk scene to have them, and everyone was impressed by their fiery sound and raw volume. Black Flag's Bill Stevenson once asked me to borrow some of them right after I had got off stage and was packing them up. I'm afraid I told him to get lost, and he was very disappointed about that. Sorry Bill. I eventually broke them all apart from a 15" hi-hat bottom and my 22" Ride/Crash - the first one I bought back in 1983 - which I still have! That cymbal has real sentimental value to me, and is my most treasured possession, after my dad's watch. Sal (ex- Sick Pleasure/Code of Honor - San Francisco)

Power! No triggers needed when you sound like that from the acoustic drums, Brutal!
@Mr.Bitchslap4 жыл бұрын
DofkaTubeChannel when you play that slow you wouldn’t need em but playing in uptempos above 230 bpm it’s necessary to have at least your bassdrums triggered
@BJazz194 жыл бұрын
@@Mr.Bitchslap this man plays up to 230 bpms and still has enough power to rock an open air show. while those guys that go above 230 bpm are just slightly tapping the bass drum.

@@Mr.Bitchslap bro i play electronic drums and acoustic drums. and you eventually start hitting the drums with less power because it makes you satisfied with the volume. but if you practice with an acoustic kit, you have to make it sound loud. otherwise it will sound like crap and bass drums will not be audible.

I've played drums for over 20 years. I can copy most of the great metal drummers, i.e. Peart, Mcbrain, Travis, Anders Johannson, Appice, Burr to name a few. But Lombardo is just way too fast with his feet and some of his fills are just plain wicked and difficult to really nail down. He's on another planet and dare I say the afformentioned drummers probably couldn't play his style either. It was frustrating when I was learning because my younger brother was impressed with my skills in the end but always would say "play some Slayer." To which I would have to say, which no drummer wants to admit, "I can't do it man, the guy is just to freaking fast with his feet." My respect for Lombardo's talent is immense. Your average person just doesn't have a clue the degree of difficulty involved in Lombardo's style of play. As Halford is to singing Lombardo is to speed metal/thrash drumming. He's the original jaw dropper insofar as his speed and overall command of the instrument. I don't even think if I were to spend a few hours with the man himself I could copy him even with him showing me exactly how he's doing it. Some musicians are just Apex predators at their craft and Mr. Lombardo is one of them.

I think his arms are better than his feet...
@lukebarkermusic5 жыл бұрын
@@alexandrosbagkas Yeah I agree, I find it harder to try and play his level of speed and power with the arm stuff, playing the skank beat he uses in a lot of Slayer songs at those speeds is tricky as there are constant 8th notes on the ride cymbal / hi-hat along with quarters on the snare, as opposed to some metal drummers that just alternate between the cymbal and snare. I can usually do Lombardo's speed on double bass, although I would be nowhere near his level of power. I read an interview with a drummer that saw Lombardo's kit and said the bass drum pedal beaters were back at 90 degree angles for a big stroke to get a powerful sound as he was powerful enough to play it like that. There are certainly metal drummers that do faster double bass stuff these days with more complicated, broken up patterns using all kinds of tricky techniques that will probably take me years to master, but I'm certain most would have been inspired by Lombardo. He certainly inspired me to play metal drums. On another note, I see Slayer is doing their 'final' tour, I would be really excited to see them if it wasn't for Dave no longer playing with them :-\ They did a few UK shows recently, but as mentioned no Dave, no Jeff Hanneman of course and even Lamb of God supporting didn't have Chris Adler with them.
