I know he wants to sell his book, but I can't understand what the point of doing an interview is if you won't answer any questions.

It seems like he only agreed to be interviewed to plug the book but gives away nearly no information making for one difficult interview for you John. ☹️

I get it... it's all in the book. But give us something here.
@jorgesuarez70738 ай бұрын
I don't see the point of this interview. The interviewer asks a clear cut question and all Dave Mason does is say "read the book" or meander and never give a precise answer. If you don't want to answer questions why give an interview. Having heard Mason, I think Winwood was not the problem.

When someone’s answer is “the book, the book” or, “it’s in the book” what do you think I’m NOT going to do? That’s right, I’m not going to read the book

Ask Becca Bramlett how it was working in Fleetwood Mac with Dave….or anyone else who has worked with him for that matter. Dave’s not an easy guy to get along with.
@adamlasko3158 ай бұрын
That version of Fleetwood Mac with Dave Mason only lasted two years at best (1994-1995) There was an album & a tour. It was the worst selling album by Fleetwood Mac, and the tour was unsuccessful. Mick Fleetwood quickly dissolved that lineup after the tour dates ended as he wrote in his book. Dave Mason was in Ringo's Starr All-Starr band in (1997) but was dismissed during the rehearsals before the tour started. Ringo kept a tight-lid on what transpired. I have always liked Dave Mason playing. As for how he operates in the studio, on the road, the writing process, or with his bandmates is a bit of a mystery. A talented cat for sure.

Anyone who starts an interview off with "you have to buy the book" isn't worth wasting time listening to. Sorry but 99.999999999999999999999% of people don't care enough about Dave Mason to buy his book. I was barely interested enough to click on this link....and definitely not interested enough to listen to a Dave Mason marketing video.

This interview with Mason is like all the others. He gets cagey and weird about revealing anything. A very talented and frustrating person.

I once read somewhere, that Steve, Jim, and Chris would come in the studio and work songs up sort of like the Beatles in get back. But Dave would come in with a finished song he wrote, and then tell the others what to do, and how he wanted them to play it. I can see where the resentment came in !

I remember reading in Cream about the very ugly sessions that Traffic made their way thru. So the details via Dave Mason should bee interesting. I still enjoy his 12 string work on All Along the Watchtower with Jimi.

As far as I understand, the filmed interview with Jim and Steve was part of an overview of Traffic they filmed for the Hall of Fame. Dave was interviewed separately, which is why he doesn't appear with them. Segments(?) of both interviews, with the 3 surviving members (at the time), were almost certainly shown during the HOF event, or at least the part with Dave was. But yes, Winwood has pretty much removed Dave from Traffic's history. Also, I don't think Dave will stray in his book far from the narrative he's given in the last 15 years or so: he left the first time because he was "inexperienced"; the second time, he was fired (following a disastrous American tour, but he won't admit that). Steve recorded with Dave some tracks on Dave's album in 1987 but really seems to have closed the door on him after Jim Capaldi died in 2005. Dave had a complicated relationship with Jim Capaldi too - and the two were friends since they were 14!

From what I understand, Steve, Chris and Jim had formed Traffic with the understanding that it was a group effort with everyone sharing the processes together, composing, lyrics, ideas. Then Mason shows up, writes some songs on his own and says, "they're my songs and we're going to do them the way I want them done " Yes, Dave's songs brought Traffic some early hits, but Dave's songs were taking Traffic in a direction that collective Traffic did not want to go. Hence the difficulties.

Wasn't Dave in the Traffic reunion group? I saw them with the Dead, I believe, a bunch of years ago. I THOUGHT he was there. I also remember a show he did at Universal HA! Just he and Capaldi. I thought it was great, but most people walked away. They were expecting a party like the one with The Beach Boys a few days before.

Dave Mason's songs, which as others have said he wrote by himself and took along, were like nursery rhymes and not in keeping with the work ethic (jamming) or folk-jazz style of the rest of the band. Neither man wanted to give way. As for the Hall of Fame, SW wanted DM to play bass on Feeling Alright as he had on the original but D M said no - he wanted to play lead guitar as he hadn't played bass for many years. Steve said no, so Dave wouldn't go on stage. It is quite noticeable how Dave Mason plays so many Winwood/Capaldi songs and even calls his Tours by Traffic titles even though he was not a "genuine" member of the band. It is also worth remembering that SW was still a teenager at that time.
