Dave is one of my all time favorite artists. He is just a good soul with a great ear for music and surrounds himself with such pros on stage. The entire band are just awesome people and kind hearted. His music stands the test of time and the band is always making new stuff that is stellar. Love this interview, have Dave on more Howard he is just a great guest and person.

So long as it sounds good and you're not damaging your hand/fingers by playing weird, then I'm all for playing however you want to play. That's the thing that people forget about music, it could be played anyway you want it to be so long as the end goal is agreed upon that it is music.

The fact Dave Matthews was influenced by Robert Fripp makes him legit in my book. Now I'll listen to Dave Matthew songs, haha. No I have already been doing that actually. One thing he said about his hand pattern is very credible. You don't play it in the "safe spot" because when you spread your fingers out you can retain that pattern throughout the neckbeard in different keys and is a legit jazz technique.

the reason Dave is somewhat perplexed about the spread of Robert’s hands, is because Robert uses a different tuning and has done for 40 some years; he’s dubbed it the “new standard tuning,” and that’s why the hand spread is so extreme…..
