If you’re trying to listen to Dave, he makes a short point at 3:28 and then the rest of his reaction is at 4:32. Andy, if you insist on talking this much, play the clips of Dave and then share your reaction afterwards. Viewers choose this video to hear Dave and they get a long rant from someone they don’t know.

Boyd took himself out of the band. The band took summer 2017 off so he could go try and start up a new band. He lacks musicianship. He’s a good performer and that’s it. The band gave him opportunity after opportunity. Only so much you can do to help somebody out. And only so much you can do as a violinist in a rock band.

I don't know the answer, but I have wondered if it has anything to do with the legal/contractual structure of the band. For years they didn't have any other "official" members besides the original ones. It was because the band is a legal entity and each member has ownership. So I suspect there may be something legal preventing them from "replacing" Tinsley playing violin, as part of the agreement with him leaving the band.

I was at SPAC for both nights. The shows were just full of this energy that was absolutely contagious. However, I will say this... as a long time fan (since I first heard Crash at 14 years old and going to my first show at 19, I'm 32 now), you definitely miss the sound of the violin in certain songs. Not Boyd so much although he did work magic with the violin, but the sound of it pulling the songs together, that was really noticeable. Buddy Strong brings such a reinvigorating energy to the band though and it was amazing to see that rub off on the crowd. We all were feeding off of it... but I do hope they get someone to play the violin as a guest... at least for some of the older songs that seemed to have been made for the sound of a violin.

I was also at SPAC for both nights. What an amazing weekend. While I was at first unsure of how the band would sound without Boyd, once they started playing I wasn't missing him at all because the band certainly didnt seem like they were missing him either. Yeah there is something missing with their sound. I don't think there is a way to replace Boyd. He was amazing. The songs just don't sound the same. To me, it's still good, and I still go to concerts, but DMB isn't DMB without Boyd Tinsley. Also sucks that they blamed the "me too" crap when they're saying there had been issues for a long time...
@Trouble-Clef
@Trouble-Clef 11 ай бұрын
@@deathtotruthers1 They didn’t blame the “me too” movement. They blamed Boyd. I don’t know if you’ve ever read the text messages from Boyd but maybe you should. They did what they had to do. They had no choice, whether there was a “me too” movement or not.

@@Trouble-Clef Exactly. Dave even said that he's a fiercely loyal person, which is why he probably let the other stuff slide for so long.. But when a dude gets pegged as a predator, you kinda have to go "you know what? I believe that was the final straw. That was the limit of my loyalty, it has been reached." Also, the fanbase kinda doesn't dig when one member of the band is a sex pest... Especially not in this day and age. I mean if it was the 80s pretty much anything would be acceptable. Half the rock and roll scene of the 80s were just rapists and drug addicts. Same thing happened with Sigur Ros once it came out that the drummer was a sex pest. Dude had to go, obviously. Can't just shrug and go "oh well, people are people I guess!" and do nothing.. Doing nothing is doing something in this instance.. It's siding with the sex pest. When stuff like this happens you HAVE TO PICK A SIDE.. That's just how it is. Staying true to your guy out of loyalty is a choice just as much as throwing a sex pest under the bus is a choice.

This is almost like a clickbait headline. Boyd Tinsley was fired because of his sexual misconduct. Not one word in this recording by Dave about that issue. So after hearing this narrator rant and rave about inconsequential material and basically to hear himself talk, when we finally get to hear Dave being interviewed by somebody entirely different whom this imposter doesn't even identify, we still know absolutely nothing about the firing of Boyd Tinsley.

I love boyd and im happy there is a plethora of DMB songs I can always jam that he was a part of. But honestly, with their success, we are SO lucky they stayed together as long as they have. On a positive note, if it was just Dave, Carter and Stefan, & no one else, you'd still have one Hell of a great band
@Rngrs3910
@Rngrs3910 6 жыл бұрын
Agree with a lot of what you said, Anthony. I'm not saying this as an "I knew it!", but the shows I'd been to the past 3 or 4 years, you really got the feeling that Boyd just stood on the side and waited for an older song to come around, and then he'd take the stage and do his thing. As Theo said below, the last few albums really seemed to have less and less of Boyd, and if its because his focus wasn't there and he wasn't carrying his portion of the load in writing and composing the songs, then all this was probably inevitable, maybe all the allegations were just the nudge the band needed to say "you know what, enough is enough". I hate to say that like I think the pain someone else (allegedly) went thru was good for the band. But every long running band (Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, etc) goes thru their iterations, we're currently watching this band go thru one of theirs. And to think that now, Dave, Carter, and Stefan having been getting on stages for 25+ years playing some of the SAME SONGS over and over again, bringing in fresh perspectives and fresh ideas seems like a necessity. I think the same thing when people complain about their setlists and not hearing the songs they want, or the band pulling out "bad" songs. I think that's what makes them great. You're buying a ticket to watch this band continue to evolve. They've got songs from albums that sit in a drawer for 5 or 6 years, but then one day they pull them out, maybe a new member has a new spin, and suddenly you want to hear that song. Not a lot of bands have that talent and depth.

I went to the Hartford show in Juneau’s had a great time. I have also been listening to the Sirius channel non stop. I do have to say listening to the older tunes without out the violin is difficult. I don’t care for the direction of the band. I can do without Tim Reynolds crazy guitar solos on almost every song. Buddy is very talented but listening to ants and warehouse just isn’t the same.

Paul Randazzo, Glad to here you say that!! I've been reading comments here & during a live streaming of a show and people are saying the band sounds sooo much better without Boyd. I don't agree with that at all. The absence of him and his violin leave a pretty big hole musically. I enjoyed the concert I went to last month because it was the band, but no matter what they tried to fill the gaps with it just didn't sound .....you could tell something was missing.
@beandipss
@beandipss 6 жыл бұрын
I wont say the band "sounds better without Boyd" but they certainly aren't hurting. Their performance of Ants at SPAC N1 this year was absolutely phenomenal and I was not missing Boyd one bit that night. I find people are too stuck on what they're used to and when some change comes their way the first reaction is to be critical of it. I don't see it like that. It's no one's fault but Boyd's that he isn't there and I find Buddy Strong to be a welcome addition to the band. Anyone shitting on their current wave is clearly not having as much fun as I do at their shows and if that's the case I feel bad for you!

Again, it’s not the absence of Boyd because if he did what he is accused of then he should be out of the band. All I am saying is the violin has a very distinct sound and adding a piano player or filling his spots in pig with a trumpet is just not the same. I hope going forward that they bring in another violist if Boyd’s ship has sailed. I love the band and will go to see them no matter what I just think that there is a void in some of the older tunes.

I think the tragic death of LeRoi Moore 10 years ago had a more devastating impact on the band than any other single factor. I've been a fan since 1995 and some of my greatest musical memories took place during the eight straight years I saw them at the Gorge Amphitheater. LeRoi was special. I think, in a lot of ways, he was the bridge between personalities, the glue, the peacemaker of the group. A musician with incredibly rare talent, who was simply impossible to replace. The day he died, they became a different band, and should have retired the DMB name and picked a new one. I think it's for the best that Boyd and the band have parted ways. The reasons being many, I'm sure.

The DMB without LeRoi and Boyd aren’t remotely the same band. I’ve seen DMB many times before LeRoi died and I haven’t had any desire to see them since. Boyd’s absence only further solidifies that. Nothing can recapture the magic of those first 5 (actually, first 3) studio albums, but this band isn’t remotely as good as there were with the original 5 (plus Tim). I had the Busted Stuff album a full 2+ years before they released it when you could find it on Napster as the “Lillywhite Sessions” when they decided to make a transition to release the “Everyday” album.

I actually like DMB better since Jeff joined funny enough. I like Dave's voice as it gets older. I like Red Rocks 95 but other than that, the better live albums are like 2007 onward in my opinion. Live at Piedmont is my favorite and yea that one is with Leroi. Live Trax 36 is the next best one.

Leroi Moore was my first saxophone hero, when I was a teenager and aspiring saxophonist. DMB was popular at my high school and I played in 2 DMB cover bands. To this day, he was one of my all-time favorite players, though I've grown to love Jeff Coffin too. I follow Jeff on social media and he's always speaking out for a good cause and making the world a better place. I still love listening to the older albums though, but it's a shame hearing Boyd knowing that he want on to abuse his success to exploit young musicians.

Interestingly enough I have felt for a long time that Busted Stuff was the last Album where Boyd had song defining presence on an album. Personally I always felt like Boyd plucking and strumming his violin on entire songs was a huge copout. I’m so glad to hear Dave talk about some of their internal struggles. It lets me know that the things I felt like I was picking up on during the Charley Rose interview during the Everyday sessions, and LeRoi’s statement to Dave during Big Whiskey, that I wasn’t wrong. There were troubles among them that was keeping them from creating the music they should have been creating. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a DMB “purist” but the band hit a wall after BTCS that they didn’t start to find their way out of until Big Whiskey. This band has been a massive influence on me in so many ways. I don’t need to know every single detail of the whens and hows. We may never find out the specifics of Boyd's issue, but Dave had to fire Boyd because it was a very negative affect on the Band as a whole!!! $$$$$$$ is the bottom line period!!!! It sucks big time, because the songs where the violin is supposed to be is a void. I've seen them a few times since Boyd's departure, at SPAC/Saratoga, NY and Times Union in Albany NY and they don't sound the same! This is not a negative reflection on Buddy Strong though, he plays magnificently and is a fresh addition to the band as a whole!!! Im a small fish...im a singer and songwriter that has always idolized Dave and the band. My 2 cents is this. Over ten years ago...im at my 2nd DMB show and im trying to work my way back to get my demos into the right hands. I actually met Leroy More's nephew who was holding like 10 FAMILY BACKSTAGE PASSES....I ended up getting one....didnt meet anyone but Carter for a second. But the strange thing is this...and it has had me guessing ALL THESE YEARS...maybe now it makes since. Anyway...i built a good repor with this Nephew....who I will not name. I was asking him all kinda stuff...like SO YOU HANG OUT WITH DAVE SOMETIMES??? He is like yeah...they all come to the house for Thanksgiving every year and they are all cool...well...except for that one.....Im like who? And he said it was Boyd. I didnt comprehend anything at that time...kinda guessed he was saying Boyd was just an ass sometimes or something....but now...knowing this...and the way this kid said it....he was like....THAT ONE...YOU KNOW....like I knew....But I had no Idea. I dont know the truth but i think it cool that after a long time....things made sence...kinda like a sneak peak into a world Id OTHERWISE NEVER KNOW.

Perhaps Boyd lost his focus because he knew deep in his heart that something bad was coming down the pike. The timing of BT taking time off and the allegations against him cannot just be a coincidence... this is just my take on this. I'm certain that this situation must have been killing Dave inside.. they were close friends for many years. I love the new dynamics of the band, Buddy is a great fit and they have a wonderful refreshing sound.

Just got back from their show… While I agree the band members have all improved as musicians, I just don’t feel like the music has ever been the same without Boyd(and Leroi for that matter). The violin was such an important part of their sound. I would give anything to get to see the original 5 again… the sound was so unique. Ever since Tim and the others have joined they sound like a different band(still incredible and my #1). I miss the more mellow/acoustic vibe of old. Now, all that being said, dmb has been my favorite band since around 95… and they always will be

Was glad to hear Dave thank Boyd during the speech at the Hall of Fame induction. Boyd basically checked out. Especially when LeRoi died. After that it just seemed Boyd's heart wasn't in it. And when Dave added Tim it looked like or the impression was Boyd was also being phased out and turned down. I'm sure Boyd starting Crystal Garden was part of it. Here is the thing, I have seen the band on and off since 1993, they're not better w/out the violin. That made the made unique, the playing of the sax and fiddle. Now, they still sound good but not at the level they were. And you could see when Ann Marie Simpson played with them at the Hollywood Bowl, them bringing in a talented violinist makes a massive difference.

I have them on successive nights in different venues on this tour. The first night, they sounded to me like they were picking songs that Boyd wasn't a big part of and trying to work around his absence. The second night, Tim played some of the parts on slide guitar and Buddy took the others and it was as if no one was missing at all. It was notable to me that both nights the band left *immediately* after the show (faster than fans could walk to their cars) and each member was in a separate tour bus.

My two sons and I went to Clarkston/Detroit in early June, and then went to the Saturday night of Creekend in Indy July 7. That show was off the hook! I am a concert-aholic and I have rarely enjoyed a show so much. None of us missed Boyd, after thinking it would never be the same without him! This band is energized and at the top of their game musically. I wish I could go see them again, and I hope they tour again next summer! My two set lists were awesome, too. Also LOVE the XM Channel!

@Trouble-Clef
@Trouble-Clef 11 ай бұрын
Fair? They don’t “owe” us a violinist. A band is only great when they’re able to continually reshape themselves and keep current. And DMB does that and does it great! And replacing Boyd immediately would never have been a good idea. It’s like when a band replaces its lead singer immediately after the old one leaves. The difference is too obvious. You have to give it time in between. You have to create that new sound. Then you can add a new lead singer, or in this case, a new violinist. But doing it immediately only would’ve drawn more attention to an already ugly situation. And now they’ve had buddy Strong for a few years and he fits in like he’s always been there.

I’m just now hearing some sort of “explanation” from Dave’s words, but I gotta hold my brother Dave accountable on my personal opinion that Dave didn’t give his full truth and feelings on this topic...It actually makes me wonder if Dave is in self denial of maybe having some knowledge of possible “too much weirdness” from Boyd over the years...(if he believes the allocations made about Boyd). Maybe he holds some internal shame for not addressing the elephant in the room before it got to the level of what I’ll call a “#me too movement episode? But, I feel somewhat disappointed that Dave would have to say “we need more out of you” while in the studio...And I really don’t know myself, how Boyd was in the studio...maybe he was difficult to work with...I’ve been in the studio with a good friend of mine and we had a few artistic clashes and got into some verbal aggressions over little things or where we feel we wanna take a song, so I feel that. But, that Dave needed to ask more of Boyd in the studio, I’m struggling to believe that Boyd wasn’t giving his whole soul and passion into what he was playing....like, Devil’s advocate...has Dave not seen where Boyd takes the violin when they play live and when he goes on a solo jam with Boyd? So, I just question the integrity of that statement. If he plays his soul on stage, Live, I would think he would bring the same energy in the studio. These are just my thoughts.

Dude, I totally agree with you. 1. Dave knew for years about Boyd's sexual preference and behavior. 2. I find it hard to believe that Boyd wasn't putting a 100% into his playing. 3. The slightly out of key (flat) droning violin lines must have started to wear on Dave. He needed a fresh perspective. You can tell he just got tired of the violin. It worked great at first; he wrote 3-4 albums that used it to their advantage (quite brilliantly). But eventually it became a hindrance after having to always come up with a new violin part for every song. Obviously youre gonna run out of fresh ideas. it's more limited in it's sonic possibilities (no chords, relatively limited range, very little tonal variation). All of those factors, plus the fact that Boyd had his personal issues and wasn't always part of the team points to why Dave feels this way. Even the sax, which started out as somewhat of a gimmick and contributed to DMBs unique sound, has evolved into a horn section, allowing them more possibilities. You can tell Dave is all about keeping it fresh and avoiding staleness. So you can totally see how he kinda gave up on the violin, especially with a violinist who gave up on practicing and really evolving.

As a violinist myself, I always felt Boyd could have done so much more on the instrument. He could have kept it fresh. He could have played chords or a more complicated improv just like LeRoi on the sax. But he never evolved into those skills. The best thing Boyd ever contributed was the hook for American Baby, which remains one of my favorite songs. I think Boyd raised the profile of violinists in the rock/alternative world which helped all of us in the industry. His Zeta violin is on display at the new Smithsonian Museum of African American History. But otherwise, I think it was time for him to go. Buddy is an amazing edition and I'm excited to see where the band is going to evolve next.
