When I first got into DMB years ago I used to assume he was always high or drunk. But I have come to realize and accept the fact (after seeing numerous shows and countless interviews) that Dave is just being Dave and it's the way he is!

I totally agree. This is one of the few songs where he really shows what a clean guitarist he is. I love the effects and ambience he adds to a lot of the songs, but in this one he really shows what he can play. I love the AOL sessions version of this song, and have since I first saw it - but this blows it away.

@ everyone who comments on him being high and on drugs: if you were more of a fan or just did your research you would know that he gets very nervous when on stage and has said himself that he talks a lot when he gets that way. Did he do drugs, sure he did, he has said that also. and as for the end of the song, you're not supposed to be able to understand it, its jazz scat, or in this case, Dave Scat. just appreciate the passion he pours out on stage at every show.

I don't think Dave is high or drunk at all. I think it's just the way he is. His mind works in amazing ways, and I don't think most people can comprehend it, so we just classify him as weird or say "Oh, he's high." But it's just the way he is.

It's kind of obvious if you look at how he speaks before the song that he was high during the performance. still, that doesn't take anything away from how amazing it was. and I agree with you. some people need drugs to get to that point where they're that good. Jimi was an amazing guitarist sober or not, but I'll bet you that some of his most famous riffs were written while he was high. same goes for any musician who uses; it becomes a part of their process. I doubt it's like that for DM though

Agreed on all points. I dunno if he's high while he writes, but I'm sure some of his inspiration has come from moments of "inebriation" if you wanna call it that. I don't find that to be a negative. He's an artists and every artist needs a medium. And clearly, the use of drugs has not hindered his talents or caused him to be in tabloids or another "lohan" for that matter. So fuck it. Bottom line; the man is good at what he does whether he be high or straight while he's doin it.

Look back to Dave & Tim Live at Luther College; at the end of the track before "#41," Dave says, "This song, as it, as it's the forty-first song that we wrote, it's called, "#41." Cannabis creativus, the Dave Matthews Band. I would say he may be under the influence of cannabis, and maybe high on life from playing in front of a crowd, but nothing more than that.

Always felt Dave's mannerisms is his nervous side showing through? He's more than amazing with his ability to tell a story that ends nowhere lol He's not someone who grew up performing in front of huge groups of fans so when he broke through and never turned back it's all still the WTF just happened feeling to him? Seriously doubt DM's an "ex junkie." I'll admit his manorisms are a bit out there but more than likely he's smoked a couple jays before the show. As if thats unheard of. The whole argument about not being able to play that stuff geeked up isn't valid. Jimi Hendrix played and played out of his fucking mind and made it look unreal.
