Exactly. I did training to become a cfp, but lost interest in it as a career. Everybody wants to play accountant and financial analyst when it's time to PAY OFF debt. Thinking, debating, charting and projecting. The funny thing is when they were getting INTO debt, it was usually emotional based. They decided to do something and did it. They justified it after the decision was made: "It gets better gas mileage and it's easier to put the booster seat in." When you take that same attitude with PAYING OFF debt, it works the same way. You DECIDE to get out of debt and you do it.

or maybe people are just to lazy to work hard and improve their life and want everything handed to them. not everyone can smile for a picture and make millions or were born a trust fund baby. true millionaires are made with hard work, if you start a business you will work harder than your employees 24/7 until you get to the point where you hire somebody dependable to run things for you. I worked my ass off since high school and playing sports while going to college at the same time. then after high school I worked my ass off going to college and working full time. after college I worked my ass off working in my career and a part time job to pay off my student loans. after I worked my ass off for 7 years as I worked in my career and started and ran my business at the same time. I sold my business and now I just work about 3 to 4 hours a day working from home just copying and pasting and I get paid a full time salary that I can live comfortably with. sometimes you have to work hard to make life easier for you, instead of having an easy life just to work harder later in life. which is what most young people do, they get money even if they have to work and they get their asses in so much debt that later in life they have to work harder to pay off.

I paid off $66,000 in student loan debt after I retired from my job... My job never allowed me the time to figure out my life... I finally came up with a five year plan and found a part-time job... I made my last payment in 2020... Then, I set up the same plan for my mortgage, but I didn't take on a part-time job this time because all the money that used to go to student loan debt now goes towards the mortgage... I was able to stay disciplined because I had no other debt, such as cars, credit cards, etc, and I still don't... You have to make sacrifices to achieve your goals...🙏

I have never understood people who absolutely insist on living in the nicest neighborhoods and paying $2k or more on rent. I have always kept my rent under $1k no matter where I have to live and don't require a ton of posessions. I know people in their 50's who make six figures and have very little saved up. The level of comfort that you insist on having right now is basically allowing you no comfortable future whatsoever. I'm not falling for that.

The problem with the general discussion is that no one wants to discuss the raw numbers needed for retirement. Possibly because it will actually show the young people have a right to be concerned with the cost of living. Basically research shows if you plan to retire 30-35 years from now (somewhere in the 2054-2059 range) you'll need between $2.3 million (for a 15 year lifespan at official retirement) to $3 million (for a 20 year lifespan at official retirement) just to maintain a "middle class" lifestyle in the US. A middle class lifestyle will be $150k a year cost of living (think with regard to inflation in 2054-2059) If you want "upper middle class" lifestyle it will be around $2.8 million to $3.8 million. Which would be $190k a year for cost of living. If you only manage $1.4 million to $1.8 million you will fall into "lower middle/working poor" lifestyle for retirement. Which would be $94k a year for cost of living. This is based off the current rate of inflation 3.2% which could go up or down depending on government spending and global power of the dollar. If by chance certain economic events or alliances occur that knock the power of the dollar off it's current trend then take all estimates and times it by 1.25 or 1.5 for possible required increase. And if you believe these estimates seem unreasonable remember that several inflation calculators will show that $1.00 in 2000 has the same buying power of $1.80 in 2024. In terms of salary, $50k in 2000 has the same buying power of $91k in 2024. Obviously things could change but it's best you plan accordingly because the current trends isn't pretty.

$700/month invested in a S&P 500 fund grows to more than $2.3M in 35 years. And if you get a 401k match, you only need to put in $350-$450/month of your own money to add up to the $700/month invested. That is realistic for most (not all) Americans with an average or above average income -- if they don't make expensive life choices, like having children out of wedlock, taking on a mountain of student loan debt for a degree that doesn't qualify them for a high paying job, eating in restaurants every week, driving cars too expensive relative to their income, etc.

You cannot outwork inflation. You cannot outwork money being printed as debt out of thin air,, then given to your government as a loan to be put into circulation. The majority of people who own a home today could not afford the same home they are in with the job they had when they got that home. The founding fathers warned you about the bankers and their ability to steal the wealth of future generations. P.s. In general, the older people will be more wealthier than the younger people due to inflation. By the way income and wealth are not the same. They tax income, but they can't tax wealth.
@GigaChad_169

I disagree, assets tend to keep pace or exceed inflation. Home prices skyrocketed the same time the government printed trillions of dollars, stocks did too. Money sitting in your checking account went backwards in value by over 20% in just 18 months recently. If you don’t invest and own assets you’ll never out earn inflation, especially with the paltry interest rates most savings accounts are offering unless you do a T-bill backed money market.

Dave has admitted many times that his Baby Steps are not the most mathematically efficient way to build wealth. You will pay more in interest if you follow his steps and pay off your debts smallest balance to largest balance, instead of highest interest rate to lowest interest rate. Dave will also tell you to pass on the credit card rewards points, even if you auto-pay them each month because the "little old lady is paying for you to earn credit card points," when that same "little old lady" is also paying for his employee's salaries by buying his Financial Peace University. Oh, but that's different. I think for the people that aren't mathematically inclined/don't care about optimizing finances/just need a simple path to financial freedom, Dave Ramsey's method is the one to follow, but there are far more efficient ways to achieve financial freedom faster without much additional risk if any.

My husband 65, me 61 soon got our dream house when I was 53. I got it by wiping butts! Babysitting, then day care, then nurse's aide, then teacher's aide...okay no butts there even in kindergarten! LOL At times I took off work to see to the end of life on various older folk in my family. They could not pay me at the time...probably the state woulda but I didn't know that at the time. So they'd see that no sibling or cousin came around ( until the reading of the will ) so I got my mama's house, my mean granny's house, my daddy's two trailers, my in-law's house, and my husband's uncle's house and some money from my husband's aunt since her own daughter never came around unless she needed something. My back is torn up but I'm resting it in a paid off house and I'm going to the chiropractor in two new cash paid cars. I used them for rentals and when you add it up I brought in more than my husband. I let everyone think I was just a housefrau. Go Dave!!

At least put in enough to just get that company match. Some people say 401k is tax mine for government but I would rather have tax problem that I can work with financial adviser then be broke at old age. Ramsey has alot of good advice. Many people don't want to listen to it therefore they are broke. With that being said, due caution is advised to anyone believing that their 401k will provide them a comfortable life upon retirement because we are going through the "great wealth transfer". And it is just getting started. This will be accomplished by the Government continuing to tax everything out from under us. I know many will disagree. That's OK. Look at what you are paying in taxes on everything on an annual basis. Don't take my word for it. See for yourself.
