This lesson is an exploration of some of the principles of Dave Rawlings' brilliant acoustic guitar style. He has a unique Bluegrass-meets-new wave way of doing things that really resonates with me.

I watched 4:00m of this lesson, put on pause, Liked and Subscribed. I never do that, but I can already see that this is an amazingly good lesson. Eric, Dave Rawlings is my current guitar hero (along with Darrell Scott)... my style is very similar to your first few minutes of Carter style demo and explanation, but his playing goes light-years further and incorporates a "dissonance that works" that I just don't understand. I am already confident you are going to help me... alot. Thanks Eric.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
Excellent! I think the key to the "dissonance that works" is that while the notes that Dave plays are dissonant with each other, they're always part of the overall key of the song, so it ends up working out :-)

They pull the heartstrings every time.. One of the best shows I've ever been to was Gillian and Dave which was supposed to be a b-day present for my then no good girlfriend who I was pining over. She cheated on me weeks before the show so my best friend and life long guitar playing buddy (like a John/Paul, Crosby/Nash, Staley/Cantrell type of buddy) got her present instead. I'm glad it worked out that way, it was a life changing show for the both of us... thanks for these videos man. Rawlings techniques and general sound has always been a sort of mystery to me. I am super grateful for your sharing of this knowledge!

I dig the guitar, man. Goya? Also, a hearty "YES!!" to capos. Whenever I accompany someone else playing guitar, I always try to capo up and find an alternate voicing of a chord just because there's nothing more boring than two guitars playing exactly the same chords at exactly the same time.

Springsteen etc. live in southwest VA now and its all folk and americana.. the only way to figure that stuff out is to watch the videos and pickup on the patterns. Me too! I grew up in Long Island and New Jersey listening to tons of Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, The Doors, The Beatles, The Stones, and Creedence. Then grunge hit in the 90's and I got into that, along with everything else. Rawlings is certainly an enigma wrapped in a riddle. I love how he combines old-timey picking with 80's new wave dissonance.

Hi & thank you for this excellent video. Could you possibly guide me a little more on point 5 & use of those dissonant intervals / e.g. major 2nd? A practical guide is what i need, i guess, i have the gist of the theory. Many thanks.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah! What I notice Dave do a lot is wait until there's a little gap in the singing and then do a tiny fill - just a few notes - that utilizes an open string/fretted note combination. Very often leaning heavily on a major or minor second, depending on where he is in the scale. For example, he may do a maneuver on the high E and B strings that leaves the high E open, but moves from the 5th of the B to the 3rd of the B, creating on a major 2nd. I hope that helps!

Hi. I did not knew Rawlings&Welch music before i came across this fantastic channel. I have learned a few od their songs from You Eric and I really appretiate Your style of teaching. Two questions : what guitar You were using on this video? And 2nd: are U fond of making a lesson about Barry Harris 6th dim scale? I know it seems out of the blues, but Your way of communicate things and Your style of putting theory together in a aproachable way is irreplaceble. Take care and thank U for Your invaluable work. @@EricHaugenGuitar What I like, with both, is that live, their solos are never the same, and you never know exactly where they're going. For example, both might start off with a thematic phrase from the song (like Rawlings on 'Dixie Line'), but then both are capable of improvising in very non-patterned, not-just-going-through-the-motions ways, melodically and harmonically.

Hi Eric, I just stumbled on this when looking for something else. You have a great way of explaining things and putting into words the things that I "knew" but didn't know I knew (!?) I'm still struggling withe "minor 2nd" apparent discords that sound so David R! Am I right in saying that they are the second note of the minor scale of whatever the "other" note that you are playing? Also, delighted to see that Goya (we call(ed) 'em Levins over here in the UK). Thanks!

Thanks man! Yeah - typically the combination that yields the most Rawlings result is the 2nd and 3rd of a chord somehow played together. Like on Em, Dave with have an F# bump into an open G. On an Am, he'll stretch to get a B on the G string to go with the C.

I really like the Shubb capos - they come in a variety of styles for different guitars, and have adjustable tension so they don't squash the strings too much!

"always capo if u can find another place to capo different than your singer" what do you mean by "different than your singer"? As in a different register? cheers

Precisely! For example, in "The Way it Goes," Gillie is capoed all the way up at the 8th playing Am and E shapes. David is capoed at the 1st playing Em and B7 shapes. The result is that they both are playing Fm and C chords, but in two completely different ways. Clever!

I never could understand why someone would work and practice so hard to sound like someone else. People will come up to you at an open mic or somewhere and say to "you sound like Dave Rawlings", or whoever. Be yourself, develop yourself.
