Aside from the impactful message about domestic abuse, I do love how this album also normalises therapy, which is something I can't really comment on with authority, but have heard other POC say that the community see it as a white person thing and that black people aren't as inclined to seek that kind of help.

In the part of the song where there's singing, there's a line that says "A child without a name". I'm assuming Lesley died and the child was unnamed? (Also there is a song where there's some more context in the album)

Super conversation as always. Reminded me of the discussion I had with my wife about some former friends that I had, and my choice to end the friendships because they couldn't take responsibility for how their emotions; and that in turn, caused them to lash out at their 'loved ones'. One of the most difficult conversations I've ever had was with a friend who was due to be sentenced for grievous bodily harm (I think your equivalent is assault and battery) against his girlfriend and THEIR TWO CHILDREN, both under the age of 6. We hadn't spoken much in the preceding 4 months because I had become good friends with his girlfriend and adored their kids so my priority was for their wellbeing as opposed to the health of his ego. His inability to accept responsibility ("she made me so angry that I...") was repellent to me and so a song like this - and your reaction to it - took me back to that place, a place that made me feel so disgusted at his behaviour I felt ashamed to be a man and worse, ashamed to be his friend (my least favourite people are hypocrites) which caused me to reflect on my ability to use my critical factor effectively. Footnote to my rambling story is that my friend started therapy (whilst in prison) that he continues to this day and we are friends again because of the steps he took to address his own insecurities. Happily he has a healthy relationship with his children and their mother and a new relationship that has been going 5 years strong with a bay due in April. And his ex is now married. I suppose my point is that there is the possibility of redemption but the transgressor has to ACCEPT what they've done and take responsibility for it. People can (and will) say and do some truly horrible things but nobody can make you feel any emotion unless you let them - whether we get upset or not, irrespective of the situation, is a choice. And in fact it's a simple choice but implementing it is soooooo hard (I still struggle sometimes). Taking full responsibility for our emotions can seem unfair and unrewarding but ultimately, it is one of the most empowering things we can do. It truly sets us free because no external force will have the power to impact our equilibrium. That's enough rambling from me but it's your fault anyway - if you didn't have such great conversations I wouldn't be so invested! Looking forward to the next one
@BradAndLex3 жыл бұрын
It's my fault? Sounds like you need to take responsibility lmao jk! I'm glad your friend was able to turn his life around in prison. That must have been extremely hard to do. There's nothing harder than looking in the mirror after doing dirty deeds. It's much easier to point the finger I agree with you 1000% on taking responsibility for your emotions. Unfortunately, it seems like that's a fringe idea modern day. Often times, people conflate that idea with gaslighting. I guess every person has to come the realization that they're responsible for their emotions in their own timing. See, now you got me rambling lmao

its interesting that you paused on that life is a lesson line, in a lot of philosophies and old spiritual beliefs they think that our soul or spirit is eternal and the whole point of this physical manifestation in this "life" is to be a lesson, for your soul to grow spiritually from coping with and learning from the hardships and challenges/dynamics of having a finite physical existence.
