As a German myself, it's inredibly humbling to see that a Jew is able to acknowledge German conduct since the war as a positive thing. Even to this day, we are carrying the memory of the Nazi atrocities with us. Not necessarily the guilt of people who aren't us today, but certainly shame for their actions and the responsibility to do anything in our power as a nation, as people and as humanity as a whole to never let something like that happen ever again.

Americans have a history of making fun of and ridiculing those who do not follow the norm of self absorption and greed. They did it with the hippies in the 60's, then the tree huggers in the 80's and 90's and now the climate change activists. This disdain so colors their perceptions, they can't see the intelligence and righteousness of the person or their cause. They embrace the status quo, even if they aren't benefitting from it in the hopes that at some point in the future, they will be on top of the dung heap. They aren't just low information voters, they have no interest or curiosity beyond their own comforts and entertainments. Even though this vid is marketed as a Dave Rubin Dunk video there was a good deal of meaningful commentary on the legacy of slavery which was quite substantive

@svensvenkill3 жыл бұрын
@Jessie James "in spite of" doesn't mean what you think it means. It means, "not stopped by", "regardless of". i.e. it's a synonym of "despite". Anything worthwhile in that discussion happened because of Dave's guest, DESPITE his contribution and not because of it. Dave tried to undermine the notion of slavery being akin to the holocaust and therefore attempted (either knowingly or unwittingly) to propagate misinformation about slavery and the argument for reparations. In other words, the man is a dangerous idiot. Edit: also Marianne Williamson was a candidate for the Democratic primary at the time of this interview. She wasn't brought on by Dave exclusively to talk about slavery and reparations. She was brought on to give his show some credibility and also so he could ignorantly question someone on "the left" about various polices and positions which he clearly can't wrap his head around. Williamson made him look every inch the idiot he truly is and so yes, she totally dunked on him.

Not that I’m about to downplay the Holocaust, but 200-odd years and Lord-knows-how-many black lives tortured and lost do seem to be matters on different scales.

I know that this comes late but we (germany) didn't open the borders for immigrants. We gave refuge to people fleeing the country, there is a difference between a refugee and an immigrant. This is also not a strict national matter as we have agreements with other EU members how to handle refugees. Germany does deport people if they don't receive the asylum status and their country of origin is deemed a safe place(sry if my wording here is incorrect xD) It's just hard to handle this situation when the people in charge do not know the country of origin because so many people come without passports or even fake ones but this is not our laws or policies at work, we just take international laws kinda serious in most cases. This Fox narrative that we have open borders is a lie, we only have open borders inside the EU.

so my family was the second largest slave owners in Dallas Texas before the civil war, a fact that is absolutely shameful in my opinion. the idea that people don't understand the legacy of slavery that allowed my family to benefit even after slavery ended blows my mind. that free labor allowed them to own and work vast swaths of land, even afterwards we had the generational wealth and connection to the wealthy former slave owners that allowed my family to start businesses, and eventually you have my grandfather dad and uncles who literally lived in a large home with live in help (whom were all black and Hispanic) provided by a local university all of whom were able to go to great universities and become well paid lawyers. that's not a path that was available to the people my family owned, if Dave doesn't get that and see how that leads to an unfair and morally wrong imbalance then I'm sorry but Michael is right every time he insults Rubin's intelligence. if that hurts Rubin's feelings, then tough shit. with all that said my grandfather died just before Obama was elected and was a big supporter along with the rest of my family, the older members considered it one of the moments they were most proud of how far we've come. we recognize our ugly past, we try and do what we can to be mindful of it, and I genuinely don't think a single member is opposed to the idea of reperations. it's not a punishment, it's economic restitution for what people like my family did.
