The Alkan cello sonata is a masterpiece and deserves to be a part of the ridiculously limited standard cello repertoire. Thrilling doesn’t even begin to describe it!

Had Chopin lived another 20-30 years I suspect we would have gotten a fair bit of extraordinary chamber music from him. The cello sonata was a late work, and I think he wanted to continue in that vein. Even his late solo piano music has much more string instrument type texture and less vocal texture. I don't think we would have ever seen a Chopin symphony, but a Chopin quartet would have definitely been possible.

Can you do a review on the Istomin Stern Rose trio?

At some point, perhaps.

@@DavesClassicalGuide it's one of my favorite trios from the 1960's and I have a few of their records from Columbia Masterworks. I love your channel BTW, I am a college student and I love collecting classical music on vinyl, to me the "Golden" Era of classical music recordings are from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's.

Could you do a list of recommendations of unaccompanied cello sonatas for both beginners and us more seasoned geezers?
@DavesClassicalGuide Жыл бұрын
I'll think about it, but I can't say it will happen soon. Feel free to remind me, though. It's an interesting (if limited) repertoire.
To the works listed above by ammcello I would add the three cello suites by Ernest Bloch (1880-1959) written during the last years of his life. The first two suites were dedicated to Zara Nelsova.

Thabks for sharing the apocryphal story of Alkan's death-by-Talmud. Next we need a video on the apocryphal death stories of other composers. Salieri/Mozart is well known. But how about the story that Matyas Seiber was eaten by a lion in the London zoo?
@DavesClassicalGuide Жыл бұрын
Pity the lion.

Suggestion for a little sidetrack to the Haydn symphony crusade: Dittersdorf's 6 sinfonias on Ovid's Metamorphosis! As tuneful as Sturm&Drang Haydn at his best! Great fun and curious to hear your take on the pieces and best performances.

There aren't enough performances to really do a serious comparison, but the music is delightful, for sure, and I'd be happy to talk about it. Thanks for the suggestion. His string quartets are delightful too.

Indeed, I count Naxos, Supraphon and Chandos, but the Naxos ones have gloriously vivid (but hushed) percussion. Thanks for the string Qt tip!!
