This is such a perfect insight into the life of a booking agent. No matter how big or small an agency the phone never stops with the funniest issues always arising. It’s definitely all about passion for the music in the industry.

Dave Shapiro is the man. Period. When I was at TMW I have listened to so much information from him. He is THE music booking agent. As a new talent agent this kind of information is so important. I am in more theatrical, literary and commercial now but this makes me miss booking haha

We are a full-service talent agency but our music department is by far one of the most exciting. There is always something crazy going on. The key is being on the phones with venues and talent buyers non stop all day. You have to eat, breathe and sleep the music industry and your bands. Booking may not be for everybody but we love it at WAA. Dave Shapiro is a legend in our industry so it is so great to see him be interviewed. Our agency director Daniel Wurzbacher remembers when he was just an intern seeing Dave at Warped Tour and idolizing him.

I live and work in Spain. I tried to make amateur street artists into professional artists by doing agent work. But I failed completely. In one year my artists did not produce one single work. I don’t know how to encourage them to work. My family is in the music business in Asia. I grew up in this agent system, but I never expected artists who don’t want to work.

Hello, I have a few questions for anyone willing to answer. I'd like to start a booking agency myself. Recently I've noticed the lack of communication between business venues who want to hire acts and musicians who need jobs. I've also noticed how spread musicians are and how although they all say there are no jobs available there are indeed jobs available, the problem is that new business venues don't know how to get in contact with them. What I'd like to do is be the middle men between these two groups and charge about a percentage of either the payload or the entrance tickets or tips. I take business management in school so I know more or less what to do however I do not know how exactly to get started. Any Ideas/advice/ guidance is welcomed. thank you in advance

Hey man, few months late on this but figured I'd go ahead and answer a little bit. I've been booking shows around the Asheville, North Carolina area for about two years now (mostly for my own bands). The best advice I can give if you're wanting to start an agency is wait. Get yourself some contacts and build yourself a name and then once you have a good reputation in the scene then launch the business. Once you launch the business it is hard to charge people promotion fees if you have no industry name and by the time you're able to build one as a business it may be too late to start charging bands money. I'm still in the process of all of this so by no means am I an expert or anything though!

Hey I think you are DEFINITELY on to something and can fill a nice VOID. Go for it. How you make your money may be kind of trial and error at first. But one way might be to charge the venue a reasonable monthly fee for finding and vetting all the entertainment for that venue/business. Businesses often don't have time to do all this and it is a value add if they get someone that is plugged in to the music scene or music in general, lol. Def go for it. Wish you lived in Atlanta, lol. Best of luck. E.

Nuweku Beat is a 10 piece “Afro-groove” band based in Amsterdam, led by master drummer Yusuf Nuweku from Ghana. Based on complex African rhythms, our unique and irresistible fusion of Afrobeat and jazzy funk (with a touch of Latin and reggae here and there), combined with our energetic stage performance, is guaranteed to make any crowd move. We’re inspired by great musicians such as Fela Kuti and Ebo Taylor. In previous incarnations we were known as Zuluwannsago and Yusuf’s Beat, and we’ve performed at many venues and festivals in Holland but also in Belgium, Germany and Morocco. Nuweku Beat has recently released a 4-track digital EP called “Jungle Music”, and we are planning to release a full album too. We are ready to play any stage in Holland or abroad, and we are looking forward to working with a booking agent for our mutual benefit. Interested?
