If you have reasonable debt and a job, do what you can to budget and get out of debt. But, if you are drowning in debt (and no one is perfect) lost your job or have a job that pays less, student loans, tons of medical, can't provide food for your or your family, down on life, feel like your drowning...talk to a bankruptcy lawyer. You can't get any deeper. Yes it's on your credit report for 10 years but you can build your credit back up, become wiser with credit and have a new fresh start. I personally know someone that filed and 6 months later have a 700 credit score, has a credit card (that help build his credit but is now smarter with it) and has a sensible vehicle. 4 years later he owned a very nice home. So yes, you can file and yes you can build a better life.

Wow when a person has to face this kind of obligation, with a criminal record on his name, he still has to have courage and the patience, against every other message he is hearing, to do the uncomfortable and exhausting "right thing" to do. He is 25 but he has his whole life ahead of him. Falling so far and so fast may mean that he can learn alot more than many who have gone through less. I admire the tough individuals who get through this. Makes me feel grateful and priviledged to have a good job and a few thousand in credit cards... What was I complaining about today?

He needs to be very selective about who he works for and hangs out with. Construction may offer better opportunities for pay but so many of the guys his age who work in those trades spend too much time getting high on and off the job. That was my experience anyhow. Best wishes. I certainly hope he makes it.

I agree with Dave Ramsey because he is giving this man a mission. With no job and no drivers license he could easily give up and live in less than desirable conditions or he could climb that mountain and overcome his setbacks. It wouldn't be easy but it would give him motivation, another reason to better himself.

I have a question since I have little knowledge about bankruptcy and all of that. When someone files bankruptcy what happens to the money owed? You are rendered debtless but what about the people you owed how do they get paid?
@montecarlo4294
@montecarlo4294 8 жыл бұрын
Oh, they get paid. Unfortunately, someone else ends up doing the paying. It gets transferred and spread out to other debtors. For instance, say I filed a Chapter 7 bankruptcy for for credit card debt I could not pay back. Let's say one of them was Citi, and the amount was $5,600. Citi takes the $5,600 that I did owe (but no longer do since I filed BK) and spreads it out to however many customers it takes so as to make back their money. The other customers will notice a bump in their monthly minimum payment, or some other b.s. charge will be worked into their bill. It's about as unfair as it gets, because the responsible people who always pay on time are the ones who end up bailing out the dead beats.

Dave is not GIVING any advice here let's see : no drivers license equals risking been late for every job or job interview, driving it's also out of the equation(number of tickets), his only hope it's work for himself get in a government job program equals income, probably financial assistance and or student in a hob program (for a trade) I give it 2 to 3 years minimum for him to start over (points on drivers license go after 3 years or so depending on local, or state laws)

I listen to Dave Ramsey regularly because he gives me hope as he does for thousands. I don’t always agree with everything he says about bankruptcy though because.., a lot of the time you can come up with a plan to pay off your bills over three to seven years ... depends on what you owe. This always looks good on paper; however, @&$! Happens. Usually you have no money anyway, very little income or short term potential to raise your income. You owe everybody and yet you are doing without even more in order to pay people off.... sounds ok, BUT... the baby gets sick, the clutch goes out on your old car, a tree fall on the side of your home during a freak hailstorm and your homeowners will only cover half the costs, the kitchen sink develops a leak, the company you work for needs to cut hours, you get a severe case of the flu and are out sick for days-miss pat, your mom dies and you have to help your brother cover part of the funeral and medical costs, your sidter gets married and needs to borrow 500 dollars for the wedding costs, your daughter needs book and food money for college because she just lost her job due to cutbacks, you have a flat tire and Ford says your tires are at 2 and you need a new set of 4 tires. On and on it goes, because life goes on and the fog, the cat, your relatives, the doctor, your house and car don’t know that you’re on a budget. Before you know it, the three or four years it was going to take to pay off everything has now turned into six to eight years of your life. Don’t go into debt in the first place is good advice, but once you are there, it’s slmost a heroic, long term endeavor to pull yourself out. So I think in some cases, bankrupted is ok. With regards to Dave, he was very lucky to have the marriage partner he had and her parents to help out. Most people aren’t that understanding or kind and he has acknowledged that. Most people do not have that type of help. But I guess, like divorce, it’s a matter of buckling down and dealing with it on your own terms and meeting your obligations on your own terms ir like a bad divorce, having a judge decide everything for you because you couldn’t work it out with your ex together. Either you control to some extent your payback of loans OR someone else in charge of the bsnkrupsey court will. One of my relatives is a lawyer and he said part of his training was to visit all type of situations where you might find yourself as a lawyer. He visited a meeting between a young girl with a baby who had declared bsnkrupsey. She was asking whoever was in charge of her money for more for the month of December in order to pay for a few Christmas gifts. My relative said they raked her over the coals, shamed her and told her no that she needed to keep paying the bsnkrupsey court the allotted amount. Anyway, he felt very uneasy observing this situation, but someone else has control of your money. Do either you get control of your money or someone else will. Just like divorce--you’re going to lose something-both you and your partner are going to lose. Either you come to terms with that and work it out with your ex... or you go to court and the judge makes all the decisions for your life. Almost the same in bsnkrupsey court... you couldn’t work it out and now someone else will decide for you. Grow up... and fast.

I guess a more simple question is, you see these people who paid off the debt (many times from companies who use credit reporting to charge the poor more via APR) and they look happy on Dave's show. I think to myself "What did they get? A sticker for being a sucker?" In the bible everyone in Yisrael was given Jubilee. A time of debt forgiveness. And that was on legitimate, above the board debt. Not being screwed. But real debt. None of this compound interest crap. So if you can be released from the chains of predators trying to rob you, what benefit is their in paying a thief other than a "I got suckered and thieves think I'm a good boy now!" sticker?
