"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I find her argument so mind-boggling. She's saying because Palestine wasn't a nation-state with a government and its own currency, it was alright to occupy it? You can use this argument to try and justify any colonial occupation. India was a collection of princely states before the British colonized it, so was Britain justified in colonizing India? To ignore its 1000 year old civilization and culture? What a ridiculous woman she is.

You just don't understand what occupation means in this conflict. Occupation simply means controlling lands beyond you borders. So what happened is: The 1948-49 war ended with Egypt and Jordan occupying What became the Gaza strip and the West Bank. The territoy israel controlled, was recognized as Israel by the UN. This means, that when in 1967 Israel removed Egypt and Jordan from these territories, they now also fell outside of Israel's borders, so it remained a satus of occupation. That's how the UN had managed to create a situation where every state was an occupier of territories which belonged to...no one. You see, when GB ended it's mandate on may 15 1948, all of British palestine became no man's land. The state of Palestine only declared independence in 1988, so occupation was the only available option for decades because of the UN.

Palestinians have to go through humiliating and degrading checkpoints where they are treated like animals by the military. Also the fact that their homes can be demolished or burned to the ground by illegal israeli settlers in the West Bank or by the military at anytime and there is nothing that the Palestinians can do about it and it happens all the time.

That's why Israel's supporters harp on this "they weren't a nation" bit so much. They say the whole "land without a people" just means that there was never a "Palestine" to begin with, and their twisted moral logic says this makes it okay to boot people out of their homes I guess. @ethanstump

it also nullifies their claim upon it, as a "people without a land". the whole central core of what being a jew is, is diaspora, and to claim it for yourself while denying it to others, shows everyone that your just a violent, sick individual who isn't able to believe that two people can exist in the same place. the whole point of being cast out of egypt in the bible is to show that the jews were discriminated against, that they weren't the elites, that they never were this people who were welcomed at every turn. to step away from that is to essentially step away from the stories, to step away from the bible and talmud. and as an atheist, it's weird to me how i can apparently even disagree with that? 🤷‍♂

Australian here. The argument that Palestine wasn't a nation is an argument we are familiar with. When the British arrived they found no nations (at least nothing they could identify as one), no kings, no flags and no currency. They basically acted as if no one was there and founded the colonies. Recently this was called the doctrine of Terra Nullius. Of course there were people there who had laws, customs and regions they associated with, but that was disrupted by colonization. Australia as a state owes a moral debt to people who suffer generational dysfunction from the crimes committed against the first people. The first peoples had their land stolen from them. Now its not like we Europeans can just pack it up and go home, but we can at least acknowledge that a wrong was done and try to heal the unhealed wounds of colonization... and not, say, make it worse by unaliving civilians because of a terrorist attack.

Just like to point out that Judaism is a religion it doesn't actually have an ethnicity... or a homeland. There are Chinese Jews, Indian Jews, Brazilian Jews. Because being Jewish is a religious faith, not an ethnicity. Palestinians are from Palestine... European Jews are not. Not sure how to make it any simpler than that except this: "I were an Arab leader, I would never sign an agreement with Israel. It is normal; we have taken their country. It is true God promised it to us, but how could that interest them? Our God is not theirs. There has been anti-Semitism, the Nazis, Hitler, Auschwitz, but was that their fault? They see but one thing: we have come and we have stolen their country. Why would they accept that?" David Ben-Gurion, born David Grun from Poland. Israel's first prime minister. The Zionists that stole Palestine admitted it. It's not controversial.

If it were a land for a people for a people without a land....why then was a Nakba of 700,000 Palestinians needed in 1948? Also, Israel existed circa 1,000 BC for about 100 years before becoming Judea for about another century. In other words, prior to 1,000 BC that area was ruled by many other kingdoms and between 900 BC to 1917 AD it was ruled by other kingdoms, notably the Roman and then the Ottoman kingdom....so it has been Palestine far longer than it ever was Israel....

The difference is Hasan wasn’t allowed to make points because Piers kept derailing the debate by asking Hasan like 20 times if he “condemns Oct 7th” even though Hasan said he did multiple times. Not to mention Hasan had people from multiple sides including Piers just saying ridiculous shit he would barely get a chance to react to. But Hasan was correct in his stance

Hasan has the brain of a child, he comes in with talking points and when they get challenged he throws a tantrum. Dude is a complete grifter, he started off as an Andrew Tate wannabe and when that didn't work he pivoted to poltics for 12 year olds

@@mylespando5192 You are 100% correct! Piker was trying to debate 4 people at once. THAT is why he got flustered. How the f**k could anyone watch that episode and net grasp that?

That's one of the most wild parts of this whole story to me - that a leader of a country could go brag to the UN that they plan on ethnically cleansing and annexing territory, and nothing was even said about this (to my knowledge) let a lone anything done.
