I have to say it, Dave Weckl is on the Top25, right, more like Top10 at the very least, because he is number one for me. His approach on the drums and his skills to teach clearly important stuff that no one else really talking about is beyond words. Did you ever heard his chops, or him talking about eating salad and stay away from drugs, drinking? That's Dave Weckl, first class drummer and one of the best, if not the best. And he is backing everything with breathtaking chops, sound, performance, and the wow factor is not him doing stick trick but more like playing music in an incredible narural way, such high level, it makes everything look so easy like a walk in the park. But it's not easy at all. I will soon create my own KZbin channel to show to everybody how this guy influence is tremendous to me. With KZbin, it's a gift to see him and watch him play in HD, over and over again. There is no mystery left. Dave Weckl is just amazing.

Not sure how many 'old' people are here, but over 20+ years ago (more like 30, don't remember, that's how old I am) he revolutioned the drums' world with Back to Basic. Lots of 'young' drummers don't know it. History is important :-)

Oh just another drum demo to watch except after a few minutes this is turning out to be something very special. This is what to aim for folks, relaxed playing that`s a joy to see & hear, beautifully executed on a drum set that sounds unbelievably melodic.Does it get any better than this? No, this is a hard act to follow.

I saw Dave in a clinic in Atlanta back in the early 90s and that clinic has always stuck with me. I remember him talking though positioning and drum kit approach at length at the beginning and some guys being really impatient about him not "playing a solo". Dave was respectful but firm in his defense of what he was talking about. These guys got dismissed for being "jerks" and the rest of the clinic was better and more positive. I don't love a lot of the music Dave tends to be recorded on, but still he has always been one of my favorites. This session is no different.

Since I started playing, I've sung drums. When I started, I was nine years old, and I learned by copying what I heard on the radio (whatever was popular in 1986!). I never gave it any thought until I had played a huge battle of the bands when I was in high school. There was a guitar rig issue which resulted in me playing a drum solo in front of my high school, and the high school of the neighboring city... But I was a huge ham back then, had no fear, and I loved soloing... After the performance, a bunch of people asked me how I was able to play that solo. Was is rehearsed? If not, how could I just make it up? It was at that point I realized that I sang everything to myself. I was seventeen, at that point. High school junior in 1994. It was also the night I knew what it felt like to be a rockstar. I take for granted that I was able to experience such support at such a young age, to be regarded by classmates, local musicians, and adults in the community as a "great" drummer. Because I sang my drum parts..

When I was younger, a great drummer friend of mine, before we ever played together would use our mouths to jam - he'd do the drums and I would be the colors/percussion. We knew right then that we had something special between us. We later played together in various projects and our own drums only recordings. So yeah - sing! And maybe even do like us, get a custom van, hang out at a park or graveyard, throw on some Brand X and jam with some fellas on whatever stuff you have in the van - drum heads, bottles etc. Best of times.

I love how he says the same things as Victor Wooten about the thought and approach to music, like thinking melodies and singing. The instruments are supposed to sing their own song in a conversation with the other instruments. It's all about communication, not technicality. Practice is supposed to be rigid but when playing "music" the point is to forget the technical stuff and let it come out intuitively.

Yeah love the new flat ride. I saw the NAMM viseo that Dom Famularo did where he featured it (and another 18" protoype based on the cymbal Roy Haynes played on Now He Sings, Now He Sobs). I like the name "Urban Flat Ride." I think it's the perfect name for that model. Loved the sound of the prototype on the Akoustic Band Live set. The problem I've always had with flats is that they can be so one dimensional. Lots of tick but really nothing else. I picked up two over the last couple years that go against that, a K Light Flat (I've since seen Bill Stewart and Marcus Gilmore playing that model) and a K Constantinople flat. You can dig in, crash them, everything you can do with a regular ride but they don't overpower. This new Sabian seems to have those same qualities. Love it.

Hey Dave gotta tell ya you still got it and what I mean by it if course crazy drum skills and teaching skills! Back in the day when I was going to be the next best drummer in the world a guy at the music store where I bought my first kit recommended a VCR tape and it was yours basics begginer tapes I bought them and watched them all over and over actually learned a lot well as time goes and we all have to make a living and all that crap I haven't touched a drum stick in years, trued to get my grandson's into drumming one didn't have a chance and did not care the other was a natural but didn't care to drum but he had it and could of been real good anyway i m old as hell now and and wish I could of stuck with it, I've got two granddaughter s and trying to get them interested without pushing it on them so I jumped on google and of course googled your name looking a little bit older but still amazing drummer and teacher it's crazy I found one of the videos I had and it made me wanna drum just like I did when I first started, that set off the spark my granddaughters and I will be watching back to basic and all your old videos to get started and keeping up with you just wanna say thanks for doing what you do your awesome as always and who knows my granddaughters just might be the next Best drummers in the world!!
