Glad I found a review talking about the thermal issues: My Dell XPS 15 9560 battery ACTUALLY CAUGHT ON FIRE! It was still under waranty and I had even bought extra service. It's been a month now and Dell is still working on giving me a new one, they confirmed I will recieve a 9570. I'm feared to death of these computers. I just got home and was very lucky otherwise my house would have been on fire. The laptop wasn't charging and wasn't even turned on at that moment. I had been using it intensly for work that day but it had been turned off for around 2 hours already...

This laptop took 5 years of Engineering curriculum, including 2 years of “zoom university” like a total champ. Laptop was light enough to be in my backpack every single day on campus, and the battery life was long enough for those 9am to midnight days. The build quality and screen quality are something I grew to appreciate during long days in the library, and despite throttling, was successfully able to condense my desktop into a 4lb package in my backpack. Gaming performance and video rendering performance were also acceptable so long as you understood the limitations of the system. All in all, couldn’t recommend it enough, just wished Dell electronics had more longevity.

@@MrOmarMoustafa It depends on which CAD software you are using and whether you do more GPU- or CPU-intensive stuff. Some software products (CAD, etc.) run better with Quadro and Xeon, other run better with your standard CPU and GPU series. Of course the price difference between a decent gaming notebook and a mobile workstation is definitely noticeable. I would first check what the software, that is used, runs best on and then pick the mobile solution accordingly. A 1050ti is enough until you decide to do some 3D rendering. Then you are screwed. There is a difference between the requirements AutoCAD and for example SolidWorks have.

Good review! I think something often ignored in reviews is the fact that there are people who need dedicated graphics cards aside from gamers! The thermal throttling had me worried about buying the 9570 but this actually perfectly suits my needs for a mobile CAD/ render/ print media machine. 4k screen and battery life are both brilliant and all my architectural software runs smoothly without any throttling issues that I've noticed. I really couldn't find anything else comparable in the market since anything as powerful was a 'gaming' laptop with enormous sizes and/or disappointing screens and anything with a nice screen and size had disappointing graphics. It's not perfect. I have found the speakers to be disappointing, with a bug that forces me to restart frequently to get sound to switch back on, there's a squeaky spacebar, and I've even had a few system hangs over the 5mo I've had it. But overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

This is an amazing laptop. I have repasted and undervolted it. It was still running a bit hot during gaming so, I have decided to disable turbo boost while I game. Now gaming and cpu and gpu are running in mid 70s. No more throttling issues. I recommend disabling turbo boost for anyone doing heavy gaming, as it reduced my temps by 10 degrees.

What kind of games do you play? I’ve had mine since August and I’ve been playing games like mk11 and borderlands on like medium settings and it doesn’t get insanely hot but I’d like it to be better. What do you mean by disabling turbo boost?
@abdifatahartan90344 жыл бұрын
In the BIOS there is an option called Intel Turbo Boost. Turning this setting off will keep the CPU clock speed at base clock. However I have found that it can reduce the temps by 5-10C. There is also an app in Windows called Throttle stop, this can also be used to do it while the device is switched on.
@gumott3 жыл бұрын
Did the same thing, no turbo boost makes temps a lot better, but now that undervolting is out of the picture, disabling hyperthreading also helps reduce temps

Most importantly it has to not look like a flashy UFO when you have to present in a conference. The only downside of this laptop on that usage is the camera angle. If you are trying to play Tomb Raider with maximum settings on this laptop, you are looking at the wrong market. I mostly do programming and editing so the laptop performance helps a lot. I literally just bought the new xps 15 today. The reason I got it is because I used to have the 2017 razer blade, but I brought it to the Microsoft store for them to fix it because of battery bulge (I didn't want to end the warranty by opening up the bottom). They gave me a 100 percent refund of $2100 and being rushed to buy a computer before they changed their minds, I bought this. It seems very good as of now. I'm headed to school, and I was a little embarrassed with the blade and its fans. For a back to school device capable of playing games, I see this as the computer I should have had since the start. I'm fine downgrading from a 1060 for a computer like this.

Dude, DUDE, *ZenBook Pro* ! 1st of all the 1st generation of it, you criticized a bit for precisely the same but not-as-pronounced thermal issue, while you say here that you need to Understand that the XPS was not designed with gaming in mind, which the ZenBook obviously shares.. 2nd and more importantly it is absolutely a better alternative to the XPS than all the Gaming devices you've mentioned here, 4K Screen, Good (Not as good I know) Battery Life, Awesome Build, Amazing Performance, Improved Thermals, Thin & Light Workstation Laptop. I bought the 1st Generation of it (1080p Screen), and I haven't looked back, I'm getting amazing performance even on the battery front (10 hours more or less). I love your content and I hugely respect your opinion and even use it as a reference in most cases, I just don't understand what is your problem with this amazing device, maybe give it some time, make a full review on the newer version, it might change your mind a bit. Cheers...

i think the point was its a 3rd gen product and very little has been done to combat issues it's had since conception..thermals matters not just in gaming applications. and tbh i really think some dell Engineers need to be let loose to come up with a slightly different but more similar design. but maybe they wont really have to by the Time intel gets down to 10nm power efficenicty could just be solved in a gen

Hi Dave, I bought a 9570 (before this video came out) and it arrived a few days ago. I've had crackling in the speakers, and judging by other forums, many people have had the same problem. Have you had any experience with this through any of your XPS laptops? Would love to hear your thoughts. Dell have offered a replacement, but others have done that and the problems persisted. I've updated the drivers (as far as I know). It's a beautiful machine, this problem is really letting it down!

ikdekker I ended up buying the top spec one (i9, 32gb ram, 1TB SSD) and it’s a beautiful machine. However I’ve had some thermal throttling and also an issue with the speakers which dell is looking to repair (apparently by replacing the motherboard). So once they visit and look over it, I’ll get them to check over everything I’ve had problems with and address them, which I think is mostly software issues.
@ikdekker6 жыл бұрын
Toby Barnhill customer support seems to be good. However, many reviews on the Dell site (www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9570-laptop) have several different issues. As it stands, 67 one stars, and 330 5 stars. Seems like it's mostly a good product, but for the price it's at, I don't want to have to be lucky.
@tobybarnhill76936 жыл бұрын
ikdekker you’re 100% right. The service is really good (not as good as Apple, but better than anywhere else). The fact that they get a technician to come to YOU rather than you have to go to them is really nice of them. They’re happy to give me a replacement but I’ve said I’d rather them just fix the current one as chances are, there would be a reoccurrence of the same issue. If this doesn’t work out I’ll be moving back to Apple as XPS is the best looking and best performing for its size and body. I’d consider Razer but they’re customer service reviews aren’t convincing enough. Anything else looks cheap or too bulky with the same specs.
@clintonhendry89676 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem. I fixed it by downloading the audio driver from the dell website. It was different than the one that Windows 10 installed automatically, and it got rid of the crackling issue. I forget the one I had before, but the one I have installed now is: 6.0.1.8454 www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cadhs1/product-support/product/xps-15-9570-laptop/drivers My current issue is the space-bar squeak. It's total bullshit. The only thing I've found on how to fix it (besides a youtube video that involved Vaseline) is a reddit guy that says it'll go away one day.

I regret my purchase of the XPS15 9570. Lauded as the ultimate media laptop for video editing and photography, it has been nothing but problematic for me. I don't see an inkling of the performance I should from a laptop with these specs. It also has completely affirmed that all review sites are paid off and don't bother looking at actual stats in real world use. A complete joke. I should not have gone for the i9 variant, since as you said the chassis is incapable of handling its output. I gave up trying to edit video content on this laptop. Even with the use of proxies it struggles with any kind of effects based editing. Such a shame because compared to its direct competitor, the Macbook pro it was over £1700 cheaper and I loved that it actually gave me an SD card and usable ports.

I've had the 9550 and 9560 (or whatever the model numbers were).... Two versions of this laptop, only paid for one because the first was getting so hot the touchpad started to warp and stopped working... warranty replacement/upgrade. ANYWAY, you commented on "If they wanted to, they could turn up the fans and improve performance..." This isn't possible from a consumer perspective and thus we're left with a Laptop that under any load for any period of time, will throttle itself to almost unusable levels. If I load up a windowed version of Path of Exile, running 1080 on low settings AND hardware limit the FPS to 30, after about 10-15 min max it will throttle and start to be almost unplayable. If you keep going, the rest of the laptop will become unusable as well. IE, if you're running a game in a window and trying to multi-task by switching to check your email, Chrome / Outlook will become unusable during the throttle periods and you have to shut down the game or wait it out.... Literally the only way I can do any meaningful level of gaming on this laptop is to be in a Hotel that has an AC unit in front of the window and I set the laptop on top of it like a table.... my arm starts to freeze while playing games but it never throttles! The design of this laptop is very pretty looking but Dell has sacrificed any level proper design and construction for making it look pretty. Like you pointed out in the video, putting the i9 in this thing only to have it throttle even worse is just a marketing stunt to say "yes we have i9's give us your money if you're stupid enough to not know better!"

I assume that if you buy i7, you'd get pretty much the i9 after all that throttling. But you'd lose the opportunity to give them extra money for no reason whatsoever. I saw Douglas Black's review of this and he actually said thermal performance has improved because of the VRM. I've saw the Gigabyte Aero 15X review on notebookcheck. Even it throttled occasionally. And so did Razer. MSI's GS65 has the lowest performance of the i7. However on heavier laptops with better cooling solutions, I've saw better performance. It's about time we stop emphasizing how thin or pretty a device is and focus on workloads instead. The industry is moving this way because we keep buying. We aren't buying alternatives that have better thermal solutions. If people want performance, lift weights. I'm tired of hearing about engineering. I'm sorry
@lewsee55626 жыл бұрын
This. I don't mind thin, light, and pretty laptops as long as the performance isn't sacrificed. I don't buy a laptop just to be a stereotypical hipster teenager at Starbucks. Laptop OEMs NEED to fix their thermal issues because higher temperatures will shorten the laptop's lifespan. Even worse if you live in a hot weather.

The alienware throttled so badly that rendering was impossible any game I played had massive stuttering. So I think across the board dell needs to revisit all of their thermal solutions.

Why I9? It sells laptops (over a vendor who doesn't include it) and makes profit (up sale) since most people don't understand thermal limitations. They trust that dell, Lenovo, HP, ... won't sell them something that has "throttling" problems. I learned this when I purchased a Lenovo tablet/keyboard that had an I5; MIIX 10. It looked like the perfect surface killer in its day; price and potential performance. It literally throttled 10-20 seconds of doing anything. It had severe power limit throttling. There was no solution. Also, most users will not notice most throttling signs, since typical usage would not be affected greatly if at all or they blame Windows. Thanks for the overview of that unit!

That’s one scenario. I’ll present another where it works really well. Thailand without AC, running Netflix, browsing or editing 1080p footage. It gets hot occasionally, but handles really well compared to laptops I’ve had there in the past. For 4k footage, that would probably change. And keep in mind they don’t sell beanbag «laptop tables» there, but loads of boards with fans. Laptops getting hot is the norm, not the exception. Every computing device I’ve used has gotten warm. It’s in comparison to other laptops that this one actually surprised me in a positive way. Keep in mind you need a board under it. This is not a laptop you keep in your lap or your bed. The vents are underneath. They would ideally have a cold slab or board under it. With fans or without.

Hey Dave, I know your main focus here was on the i9, which I agree makes no sense in this laptop (Nor the MacBook for that matter), but I recently got the 9570 and am honestly super impressed with it. I bought it to replace a 2018 blade I was very unhappy with (CPU always throttled to 3.4ghz or less, very, VERY hot, dead pixels). So far the XPS has surpassed expectations and erased all the doubts I had about it. It ran for hours at 3.9ghz playing Destiny 2 with an external 1080 (uncapped FPS between 90-150) and because the CPU didn't throttle, I'm seeing better performance than I did with the blade. Even when the 1050ti and the CPU are used, no throttling. It's actually convinced me I can finally switch to a laptop as my main machine, with the egpu setup ready to go and getting 80-90% of the performance of my 8700k rig. I realise it's possible the Blade was a true lemon and this XPS is a great outlier, but still, very impressed.
@darknight9916 жыл бұрын
Oh. It's also so much quieter than the Blade. The blade used to run it's fans almost constantly, even at idle. This only spins them up under sustained load.
