I’ve been a bartender for over 25 years, and now a bar manager. First of all, save your money, and do NOT go to a bartending school !! The only way to learn is by actually getting behind the bar, and learning how to pour drinks, interacting with customers, and keeping your area clean, stocked and organized ! If you have to start by being a server, or bar back , well do it, it won’t take long to step up if you’re really wanting to become a bartender. Listen to this man, he’s spot on ! Always treat your customers like they’re your new bff, that’s how you get regulars, and that’s where you start making money ! Never let them see you mad, frustrated, having a bad day, etc…. Listen to their problems, they don’t want to hear yours ! Listen to us veteran bartenders, we know what we’re talking about, we haven’t been in this business for our health for sure !! It can really be fun if you let it ! 10:33

not like it is a big deal to be a barback. Idk where u live but for example in London u could get a barback job in like 1 hour. Even in a big prestige bar. Not a big deal at all. Many of the barbacks cant even speak english. I consider this job equal to a kitchen porter... the lowest level of hospitality... nothing special... get promoted to be a bartender is like a couple of months maximum... if you speak english and ur not completely retarded (like 80% of hospitality ppl actually ARE) of course. So do not think about it as a wonderfully great achievment like being a brain surgeon or something... cuz man.. its not like that... And a lot of people complaining about the low salary and shit.. cmon .. XD U just fucking need to know your place in society thats all... other ppl are put a lot of effortnin their lives while you just.... basically serve drinks bro.. thats it..

Thanks for the reply Matthew. We appreciate you taking the time out from calculating launch trajectories and feeding the homeless at the neighborhood soup kitchen to kindly judge our aspirations and successes. I know your KZbin channel must be a front for the actual secret and successful life you lead, because all I see on there are subscriptions and liked videos of bands, fantasy gaming sites--with lots of goblins and warlocks battling middle earth, etc... So while I think your advice to Anthony that “U just need to know your fucking place…” as well as your insightful and grammatically acute observation that “other ppl are put a lot of effortnin their lives…” is extremely valuable and constructive, I’m not sure how much mentorship Anthony is seeking from a jobless, gaming 30-year old living in his parents’ basement stroking his guitar and watching wizard gaming videos and the TBS Harry Potter marathon. Cheers (or as Harry would say, “Expecto Patronum”) Dave

Hey Dave! Two questions: I have recently been thinking about making the switch to bartending but my recent background is in tech. The two fields couldn't feel more different. Do you know of folks who have made this drastic of a switch? I also have a background in social services, specifically working in homeless shelters. Through those years, I developed incredible de-escalation skills. So my question is: how often are these skills needed at a bar? Is this a skill worth bringing up in an interview? Or putting on a cover letter?

@ToadHallPub6 жыл бұрын
If I wanted to sell something to people who wanted to start in the restaurant business as a bartender, these are the things I would say. First of all, bartending is not easy. It requires a range of skills and at least a modicum of personality. Second, if an establishment is hiring bartenders with no experience, it probably not a great place to be a bartender. Once professionals get a hold of preferred shifts, they hold on to them, sometimes for years. When they leave, the next bartender up moves in. If it's a good bar, others in the bartending community hear about it and open slots are filled by experienced bartenders. So how do you get experience? Start at a restaurant with a bar and become a server. Notify management you are interested in a bartending position. Then master the skills of being a server (also not easy) which are analogous to bartending. If you are good, you will be the next to step up. Or try a hotel. They may hire a bartender with no experience, because the bar at that particular hotel may not be busy and, as above, no good bartending job is handed to someone with no experience. Honestly, I became a bartender by being a regular at a bar. I knew they wouldn't make me a bartender, but having made friends with the managers, I asked if they would lie when someone checked my references and say I had experience. I went to bartending school, so I didn't look like a complete asshole on my first day (it wasn't until my 5th day when they asked me to change a keg, which they didn't teach), and I never put it on a resumé. The only thing worse than having no experience is having bartending school on a resumé. I got a job at a hotel bar. Then another hotel. Then someone liked me and recruited me into management at a large establishment. I learned about the business. Managed a few establishments and returned to bartending. Now I own and operate a bar and restaurant and still bartend 4 nights a week, because I love what I do, I'm good at it, and owning a restaurant is less lucrative than bartending. At least for now. Bartending is an art that requires dedication. Every career bartender will tell you they still watch and learn from other bartenders. If a bartender tells you their job is easy, they are either not good at it or trying to sell you something.
@DaveAllredTheRealBarman6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment Toad. Let me address your thoughts one at a time: 1) First off, please don't tell me bartending is difficult. You can work 25 - 30 hours per week and make $60,000 per year mixing liquid and pouring it into a glass. Yes, that's oversimplifying...it takes some skill to make the drinks correctly and you must provide good customer service, but it's not like engineering or brain surgery or being covered up in your neck with grease rebuilding a carburetor. It's simple, and anyone can learn it and do it well. Anyone who thinks bartending is a difficult job--mixing drinks for $50 - $60 per hour---I can't imagine what they'd do if they had to re-tar freeways all summer. Give me a job that makes as much money that is easier than bartending. 2) I have hired hundreds of bartenders and servers, through my own bar and through my clients I consult for, and we hire inexperienced bartenders and servers all the time so we can mold them and train them through our program. We hire experienced ones too, but sometimes those "professional" bartenders can be jaded and they haven't even been trained well (plus, 95% of them steal), so bars that hire inexperienced bartenders could be a lower-level bar, or they could have a good training program, but even if they are lower-level, that's ok in the beginning. You just need somewhere to learn and gain experience so you can put it on your resume for the next bar your apply to. 3) You are correct, managers don't give a shit if you put bartending school on the resume. The purpose of my course and what I do to help people is to get their foot in the door. Like you said, hotels are one good option, but there are plenty of places who will hire someone with a good personality and train them. Once their foot is in the door, they can gain experience and level-up and find better and better bars to work at. And yes, getting a serving job first is also a decent route to take, but my students are able to follow the plan and actually get hired as a bartender, and then they're on their way to leveling-up. Those are my thoughts on the matter. I'm not writing this in a disrespectful tone...I just want people to realize that we have found great success in helping aspiring bartenders take some action so they can get their foot in the door, jump behind a real bar, which is the quickest way to learn and gain experience. That's what differentiates my course from others: I'm not promising to give you all the experience you need. I'm giving you enough skills and knowledge so you don't look like a jackass, just like you stated Toad (by the way, I do teach how to change a keg) and then I give you a plan to get hired which is the quickest path to get the experience you need. Cheers, Dave

@@DaveAllredTheRealBarman it is true that a bartender can make $50 to $60 per hour working 25 to 30 hours a week for over 60k per year. That is easy money for someone equipped to do the job. Another job where you can make easy money is being a Major League Baseball player. Mike Trout is going to make over $33 million this year. Even more astounding, he only has to work 8 months a year. Watching him play makes it look effortless. Clearly he just decided he was going to be a major league ballplayer and went for it. But you've hired "hundreds" of inexperienced bartenders who have achieved success. Let's take your word for it. "Hundreds" at least implies 200. I won't attempt to guess how long you've been in this business by your age, but let's give you a generous estimate at 20 years. Along with experienced bartenders (who you claim 95% to be thieves) you have shoehorned in 10 totally inexperienced bartenders a year. I have been hiring bartenders for at least 15 years and I can say I am well under 30 total. Why do you have to hire so often? If you were right about 100% of your hires, where did they go? Did they reach a point of experience that included them in your 95%? Or was a plucky attitude not good enough to be a skilled bartender? You mentioned in another video that someone presenting you with a resumé (one of your sacred tenets) including bartending school prompts you to, in front of them, crumple it up and laugh in their face. Even though you encourage people to work toward their goals, if they didn't take your version of bartending school which involves zero hands on training they are not only completely unworthy of consideration, they should be subject to ridicule. Pretty dick move. I have worked with a lot of bartenders who are professionals dedicated to a career they value enough to constantly improve. They make "easy money" because they have worked hard to attain a level of employment worthy of their skill. Experienced bartenders don't need to steal to make money and wouldn't dream of doing it because risking their access to those jobs makes no sense. You've got a lot of balls calling us thieves when you openly admit you put your thumb over the vent hole of a pour spot to short pour people you don't like. To anyone who wants to be a real bartender, there are ways to attain petty retribution to someone you don't want to stay at your bar that don't involve you stealing from them. The reason you feel 95% of experienced bartenders are thieves is because you want to justify your questionable conduct. Just a heads up, we're not like you. Also, we don't like you. You cheapen our profession.

Toad Hall lol you actually just said being a pro baseball player is easy? You must have half a brain if that. If being a pro in any sport was easy money everyone would do it. Moronic argument
@mapantomime5 жыл бұрын
@@micahfrigo1024 I think you may have missed Toads point... People that are good at something Make It Look easy... doesn't mean it is. Just because a good bartender makes the job look effortless doesn't mean it doesn't take a lot of patience, effort, skill gained through practice, and wisdom gained through experience. You're right... if pro sports were easy everyone would be an athlete... if bartending were easy, every ditz and moron with half a personality that thought they could hang behind my bar would still be there... just my 2 cents

I want to comment on the 5th follow-up. I have a felony. It's really hard for me to find a job. The job I found was only aquired after I showed up time after time, 5xs actually!! I started out in the dish out, got promoted to prep cook, eventually transferred to consessions(I work at Roadhouse Cinemas in Tucson AZ), and after a lot of persistence and showing that I really wanted a shot, I finally got a shot at bartending. I'm mid training right now, but I did it!! My advice for any goal, keep trying!!

This is awesome Clarence. This is exactly why I teach this in the course. Nobody realizes the power of the follow-up. Managers LOVE it when they see someone so committed that they don't give up. It's the sign of a great employee. Thanks for sharing your story.

Bartenders are usually in short supply. Walk up somewhere where they look for people. Even with zero knowledge they usually give you a chance. If you manage to not be a tripping hazard and do some stuff during the first two nights you'll be fine. - Also don't be afraid of quitting and going somewhere else if the clientele, coworkers, management, style, music, location, tips, equipment or whatever else is not what you're looking for. There are plenty different places and being "in the right place" makes a HUGE difference.

Not to be sassy but I got my barback job that I’m using to be trained as a bartender..by filling out an application. I did bring in my resume, but I do have to disagree with your comment on applications. You should consider that every place is different. While you don’t care for applications. Other places do. I think you’re right people should have a professional resume and cover letter ready to go. But applications are used often in most industries. 🤷🏼♀️
@DaveAllredTheRealBarman5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Alexandra. Here's the thing, I'm not saying it isn't possible to get a job using an application, and you are correct: applications are used often in most industries, and that's exactly the point. Most people use applications and they are used most often by amateurs. Why would you want to be like 95% of the crowd? Why not stand out and be remembered with an awesome, memorable and professional document that the hiring manager cannot forget? The point is, don't limit yourself to doing the same mundane thing that other people do. Be different. Be better. Be unforgettable, and you will up your chances of getting hired considerably.

How do you feel about splitting tips? At our bar, our cash and credit card tips are split equally between all bartenders working that night. Thoughts?
@DaveAllredTheRealBarman4 жыл бұрын
I think it's the only way to do things when bartending Danielle. The problem is when you don't split tips the bartenders will battle over the good tipping regulars, they compete instead of working together, and there is jealousy. With that said, tips should be split on an hourly basis. So if you work 7 hours and I work 5, you should make more money than me. That should not be an equal split. Is that what you meant?
@danirae6484 жыл бұрын
@@DaveAllredTheRealBarman Yes, it is. Thank you! It's my first time bartending and was curious how other bars did it. We just recently opened and we started out splitting tips, then it changed to we keep our own tips, now it's changing back to splitting. We were frustrated when they changed it from splitting them. But after a month we had gotten used to it (well me and another bartender anyways) and now they sprung it on us that we're going back to splitting. And that's frustrating because I make more when I don't split. But thanks for explaining, it definitely makes sense.

You do realize, Jimmy, that when I say "Literally millions of dollars in tips" that I say "collectively". I've had more than 10,000 people go through my course, so as a collective group they are earning millions. I'm not claiming that you will make millions yourself. I want to make sure that statement isn't taken out of context.
