Blast from the past! This was my first ever smart phone! I remember obsessing over it when I was 15 back in 2011, I remember my mom getting it for me and it was ready when I got home from school lol. I had wanted an iPhone before but just had an iPod touch, my first iPhone was the 4s in 2012/13.

The HTC Evo 4G was my very first phone. I NEVER owned a phone prior to this one since I was always so broke. But I wanted a phone and this one had just come out and I loved the design and the way it looked. I worked really hard at Fedex and about 3 weeks later I went to sprint and paid the $200 for the 2 year contract and bought this phone. This brings back so many memories at that time in 2010.

W00t! I was the developer who "unlocked" the 29.97fps cap. I remember working on it for days non-stop (thanks ADHD and hyperfocusing!), not even sleeping, along with some other very talented people on IRC, compiling the kernel over and over, testing with that FPS app with the bar graph/histogram. Eventually other, more skilled devs, got the HDMI working at the same time as the uncapped framerate, which I believe was around 45fps.

Ayy! Wow that's dope! It's so great that there are people like you out there, fixing the stupid things that manufactures like to put in place. That 30FPS cap was such a bummer.

An evo 4g was my first smart phone. I literally found mine shattered on the side of the road. I took it home plugged it in to my computer pulled all the files off of it. And as it turned out the woman that owned it before me moved to the uk to live with a guy she met online I found chat logs pictures even her plane ticket confirmation emails. I’m serious this is how much personal data was on these phones back in the day. After whipping clean the phone and deleting all her data I took the phone to my local sprint dealer and asked if they could replace the screen. Well I’m guessing since she had moved a couple days prior to my finding it she didn’t report it lost or stolen. I added it to my account added insurance to it payed the $100 deductible and bam just pike that I got a freeish phone with no contract. To this day I have is somewhere in a box.

My favorite phone to date. Old tech was better. HTC made the best Android experience and UI. The built-in kickstand was perfection. Wish tech was as creative these days rather than being a carbon copy of everything else that already exists. I wish they made a modern version of this device.

Awesome video, thanks for it! I just dug mine out of my old technology drawer to mess around with. I have such great memories of this phone as it was my first ever Android. HOURS spent on XDA figuring out root, roms, and recovery. It was such an exciting time full of possibility. It's really too bad HTC fell off like they did, and that new Androids like my current S22 Ultra have eFuses that make rooting a no-go for me. Mad props on including that iPhone vs Evo meme vid too, hahaha

This was my first ever phone and it I recently rebought it off ebay last August. Glad I did cause I was able to use it online!! Had no idea that capability died in September lol. I stopped using it now, only because the programs necessary to root the device no longer function and are not supported by Windows 10.

wow... This brings back memories. Fun fact: I was the one who opened the Google issue report on the 30fps issue back then. I was doing as much as I could to make that issue known back then, in hopes it would get fixed. Eventually HTC released an update to uncap the framerate. One of the few moments I felt like I helped make a change in the world...lol.

One thing you forgot to mention. I had the Evo 4G (followed up by the Thunderbolt on Verizon with "real" 4G and ending with the M8) and I LOVED HTC Sense. It was, by far, the best skin over stock out there. Anyway, the one thing you forgot the mention was the total backlash Sprint got over the 10.00 premium data charge they tacked onto everyones bill, that purchased this phone, myself included. WiMAX was so limited in rollout, that many users never got to test it out, yet we were all charged that extra fee for "access". Later Sprint revised the wording to keep the fee on peoples accounts. Seeing Clockwork Mod brought back some happy memories!!!

I actually bought this phone when it was first released and also the tablet version HTC View., that I still have to this day. It was one of the first tablets that actually operated on the Sprint network without Wi-Fi. I currently use it as an alarm clock and music player. I still have many songs downloaded on it and it still able to connect to current Bluetooth devices for streaming. I truly miss HTC phones. They were very well built and reliable, but unfortunately they couldn't compete with Apple and Samsung in the end.

This was a favorite phone in my history. I saw you can still buy this phone on Amazon. But I don’t know why anyone would because it is mostly now just a paper weight & only maybe nice for nostalgia reasons if someone really just wants it for that reason, cause most features won’t work now but if I can find a skin of the appearance that I can make my phone look that way. I might for a little while just as a throwback lol.

I remember getting the evo 4g as my very first smartphone when I was a couple years into college. Holy shit it was an insanely feature packed device, and it just ran circles around anything else. The screen was beautiful and so high res, and the camera was pretty sharp for daytime photos. WiMax definitely had its teething issues and it wasn't really Sprint's fault. Sprint owned about half of Clearwire, and they owned the 2.5ghz spectrum WiMax operated on. The government forces companies to use spectrum that they hold within a certain period of time or they forfeit it, so they have no choice but to use WiMax. The only problem was WiMax, running on 2.5ghz, didn't travel far or penetrate buildings well. It was blazing for the time though, at best I'd see 14mbps, but usually about 6. WiMax completely ate through battery because it used a completely separate radio and antenna, which also created issues when let's say you were watching a yt video then your 4g would cut out and the phone would revert to 3g. Since the 4g and 3g networks were not unified, you'd be getting a different IP address so if you had something in process like that a video buffering, forget about it. In areas where WiMax was deployed well, like LA, it was GOOD. You had perfect hand offs from tower to tower on the freeways, it was dope. The EVO 4g was so popular and so much dev work went into it. It was sexy, functional, and a lot of people's first time realizing the power of Android and open source. It hit me when I was listening to the FM radio built in, heard Linkin Park had a new album, then I went to download utorrent, download the album over 4g, then realize I couldn't open it since it was a zip file, so I found a winzip equivalent all in the span of my 30 minute train ride to college. What an amazing eye opening experience. Other than the garbage camera, the EVO 3D was a perfect step up in every way as it doubled every single hardware spec and made the phone a total joy to use. The ram limits on the EVO hurt the most, but the 3D was even better rounded.
