Good way to remember numbers 11-19 is that you just write number and add "toista" after it; Yksi, kaksi, kolme, neljä, viisi, kuusi, seitsemän, kahdeksan, yhdeksän (1-9) Yksi"toista", kaksi"toista", kolme"toista"--- (11, 12, 13---) Then again it changes after 19. 20 is "kaksikymmentä" You add "kaksikymmentä" and after it just number; Kaksikymmentäyksi (21) Kaksikymmentäkaksi (22) Kaksikymmentäkolme (23) etc. Hope this helps! :)
@alluusio7 жыл бұрын
And then for 30 it's kolmekymmentä. So basically the number that is first "kymmentä" and the number that is last :D Like 58 would be viisi + kymmentä + kahdeksan = viisikymmentäkahdeksan. I know it looks scary long but it's actually pretty easy :)
@R00SA117 жыл бұрын
wow nice. Wow kiva. Osasit kivasti neuvoa

toista = of second, kaksitoista = two of the second ten. The very old fashioned way to say 24 is neljäkolmatta, literally four the third (ten).

Great job, Dave! You have a pretty good memory and your language skills are improving rapidly. Maanviljelijä literally means farmer of the earth (maan = of earth, viljelijä = a farmer, cultivator, tiller...). Finnish has lots and lots of these compound words...
@digitalspecter7 жыл бұрын
You can actually break it down slightly further: vilja = grain viljely = (rougly) act of making more grain viljelijä = one who does "viljely" Follows the same pattern as this (perhaps a contrived example): pako = escape (noun) pakoilu = the act of trying to stay free or away from something pakoilija = one who's doing "pakoilu" (this could be translated as "fugitive") And the word you might see these days derived from the same root is "pakolainen" which would be "someone who's characterized by escaping something" I hope I didn't add much to the confusion =)

Mahtavaa Luola Isä! The reason why the numbers after 10 are said like that is because the olden times numbers were based on measures. Like if you went to buy berries you asked "One and a half cup of berries please". That became also the basis for abstract numbers, so 10 is the first cup and 20 is the second cup. So first it was one cup and a bit of the other cup: 'Yksi kuppi ja vähän toista' (toinen = toista-> a bit of second) and then it just was shortened to be only just 'toista' so eleven: yksitoista is one over the first cup aka a bit of second. Same logic is with how the British say the time. You say half past, which is 30 minutes over one cup. We say it is half way towards 2 'puoli kaksi' +Dave Cad
@Patralgan7 жыл бұрын
Say a Finnish "a" normally. It's formed in the throat almost. Now try to say it in the front of your mouth. It sound come as "ä" automatically. I don't know if this helps but it's just something I thought about when you said you have trouble with a and ä.

Diphthongs are used a lot in Finnish, but thankfully there's not that many different kinds. It might be worth learning them to help with spelling. For example, with "juoda" you might be wondering if its "juoda" or "jyoda", but knowing the rule that no word in the Finnish language has the "yo" diphthong, you can rule that instantly out. In the long run, this might be more efficient than learning to spell every word separately. If you're interested, here's a list: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_phonology#Diphthongs Anyway, good job, you're definitely making progress :)

I'm with you Dave in the learning department. I have been to Finland a few times in the last four years and lived there for a year. I do plan another trip this Summer and I thank you for your video's. I'm determined to turn my few hundred words into sentences (ha ha ) I'm stuck on this beautiful agglutinative language (pun intended) Onnea opinnoissasi.

@mursuhillo2427 жыл бұрын
When I first came across the first video by you, I couldn't fathom why on earth would anyone want to voluntarily learn Finnish, being a minority language around the world, let alone upload videos of oneself learning/trying/failing (miserably at times, no offense man) without showing the slightest sign of withdrawal or shame on not knowing how to pronounce words etc. Ever since (2 weeks don't exactly fit within the proportions of making something "epic") I've watched most of your videos and keep on waiting for more. In awe. Struck. After all, we're but a nation of 5 odd million backwards, silent in three+ languages, mostly introvert people. So knowing that there's at least one foreigner out there _actually _ interested in our culture/language means pretty darn much to us, and I sure as hell can speak on behalf of the majority of Finns who choose to remain silent even in the youtube comment section, without the slightest possibility of disgracing oneself over not being even negligibly literate to write more than "Torilla tavataan". So all I can say is keep up the damn good work, bud! PS. Finnish is 99% pronounced according to IPA definitions, save for those few cases of double consonants ie. sydämeen /sydämmeen/ and even those vary according to dialects.

Pronunciation tip for the sound ä and a. When articulating ä, try keep your tip of your tongue near lower front teeth. For a sound, pull your tongue toward back of the mouth. You can say long a (aaaa) and experiment how the sound transforms if you move your tongue front and back, keeping the tongue same level. Hope it helps! :)

Word endings are crucial in Finnish. They tell you a lot what's going on. The cat is on the table. Kissa on pöydällä. Basic form of table is pöytä but if something is on the table then it becomes pöydällä. The cat is on the roof. Kissa on katolla. Basic form of roof is katto but it becomes katolla if something is on the roof.
