I liked Tomi's voice straight from the beginning, and his growls are everything. Maybe check out the band Hallatar (with Tomi as singer), a doom metal band with a very sad background story. In the songs My Mistake and Melt he sings and growls out his heart.

I too was first pissed off when you called Tomi's voice whiney, but come to think of it, that was the reason I had first hard times to really like the Amorphis. Still, now I wouldn't change Tomi for anyone. Many of my favorite songs are from era of previous singer Pasi. Some of my picks for "newer" Amorphis songs are though: Silverbride (short and sweet), Silent Waters (calm and sad), Sampo (epic), Message in the Amber (folky & I love the co-operation of instruments and choir), The Golden Elk (awesome atmosphere, acoustic solos and stuff...).

I think another quite catchy and poppy song by them is You I Need. I think Tomi's voice suites very well to this kind of songs even though he doesn't do growling.
