You don't realize what a beast Alexi was on guitar until you try to learn some of COB's "easier" songs and notice what a crapton of nuances and skill were actually in all of those riffs and solos. (That he played while also singing.)

Met Alexei at a show in Saskatoon, didn't want to bother him for a picture but he could tell I wanted one, he was the one to initiate it. Was very friendly, and seemed to manage to smile the entire time he spoke to us. An hour later, they absolutely destroyed the stage. He was one of the good ones

I saw them live at Gates of Metal here in Sweden like 2004 i think, i stood in line for getting an autograph, but they had to cut short because of other artists ( they only had a set amount of time). So Alexi just walked out of the booth and hung around the people that couldn't get an autograph and just talked a bit, he was a real chill dude!

That's good that you got to meet him. I'm from a small town an hour away from Saskatoon and in 2006 I went to a show at the Odeon - now the Coors Event Centre - (Unholy Alliance Tour) it was an off date so slayer wasn't going by to be playing but Lamb of God was headlining. I was 13 years old and it was my first metal concert and I was a bigger fan of COB who were supposed to be playing. We get to the venue and there was a sign on the door that read "Children of Bodom will not on the bill tonight". I was crushed! But it was still an awesome concert. I did have the pleasure of getting to see Bodom at Prairieland Park but I'm not sure what year it would've been. Maybe 2009 or 2010? Very grateful to have seen Alexi perform before he passed.

This song was one of the first songs I ever learnt on guitar. Yeah, you can say I jumped off the deep end I know. I remember it took me so long to learn but I would practice it for 6 hours a day and I was highly motivated to play it cleanly. What I remember the most about learning was the picking hand. I would get so sore quickly. Alexi’s had an amazing picking hand and he would rarely use alternative picking. 99% of his playing was all down picking. It really groomed my picking hand to have a strong picking attack with clarity and overall a solid base of stamina. The dude was severely underrated as a musician. You got to remember he played all this music while being the vocalist.

What is crazy is how easy Alexi made it seem when he would play. Watching you trying to learn every little nuance he puts into a song made me feel exhausted lol. Great job man, you are a great guitarist. He lived in the stratosphere where most only dream of getting to. It was like breathing for him

If you haven't already, you should check out the other band he did with Roope called Sinergy, very power metal but the riffs and solos are some of Alexi's best work. Also, most excellent effort Ola! 🤘

Roope was a beast of a player, their solos on Midnight Madness were killer. And his work with Stone was top notch. Couldn't ask for a better pair in a band, either Sinergy or Bodom.

This was truly epic to watch. We all see inspirations that lead us to a guitar & watching Ola attempting this brings home how insane Alexi’s playing was, but also how adept Ola is too to virtually nailing it.

After about 15 years of trying to nail this sound, I finally got it. Big part of the sound is the speaker choice and the guitar electronics. I can go further in detail if you like.

@@skelurgh Sure thing! Getting the MM-04 or the JE-1000 booster is really important. The EMG ALX set will also work pretty well but it's not as close as the other options. For the pickup you will want either the Jackson J50BC pickup or the EMG H2. I actually prefer the H2 as I couldn't hear much difference and it was not as prone to feedback. I have the Perfect Connection preamp that he used but other amps will get you in the ball park. The thing to keep in mind is if your amp is naturally more mid range focused, you would do well with the G12T75 speakers from celestion. If it's a more modern amp such as the Marshall JVM that he used in the later part of his career, then the celestion vintage 30 would be the way to go. Sorry for the long read. If you have more questions, let me know.

Solid effort especially on that solo! This is definitely the best way to learn material because you’re not only learning the song you want to learn, but you’re giving your ear a real workout which will help you with just about everything. ADYD has several good solos on it. ADYD and Trashed, Lost & Strungout were always the highlights on that album for me. I just love how he alternates between triplet and 16th note runs.
